Michigan Curriculum Framework Content Standards and Benchmarks:
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.A.1
Verify experimentally the properties of dilations given by a center and a scale
factor:
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.A.1.a
A dilation takes a line not passing through the center of the dilation to a parallel
line, and leaves a line passing through the center unchanged.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.A.1.b
The dilation of a line segment is longer or shorter in the ratio given by the scale
factor.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.A.2
Given two figures, use the definition of similarity in terms of similarity
transformations to decide if they are similar; explain using similarity transformations
the meaning of similarity for triangles as the equality of all corresponding pairs of
angles and the proportionality of all corresponding pairs of sides.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.A.3
Use the properties of similarity transformations to establish the AA criterion for two
triangles to be similar.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.B.5
Use congruence and similarity criteria for triangles to solve problems and to prove
relationships in geometric figures.

Unit Outcome:
Students will be able to classify triangles by their sides and angles as well as
identify and prove congruence and similarity in triangles. They will also work with
transformations and be able to understand how congruence and similarity works in
a transformation process.
Lesson Outcomes:
TLW perform dilations of polygons.
TLW find the scale factor of a dilation.
TLW show that image and pre-image of a dilation are similar polygons.
Rationale/Purpose for Lesson:
Life is not to scale. As an adult, people will find that they need the ability to adjust
dimensions of what they are working with in order to make things fit or work. Being
able to work with dilations and understanding how figures are similar will help when
trying to make something the same but either smaller or bigger than the original.
Assessment:

Students will be given time to correct and ask question on the homework from the
previous night. The teacher will ask directed questions of the students to check for
their understanding as the lesson progresses as well as giving the students an
opportunity to help in working out several problems. Students will also be given the
chance to work in groups while the teacher circulates to check for understanding.
Resources/Materials Required:
-

White Board
Dry Erase Markers
Geometry Book
Notebook
Writing Utensil
Overhead Projector
Computer
Ipad
Geogebra App

Procedures:
-

Quizzes from the previous week will be handed back and the students will be
given two minutes to go over them with the people sitting around them.
The teacher will then go over the answers with the students and field any
questions that they may have.
Once all the questions have been handled about the quiz, the students will
exchange homework and start grading their peers papers. The answers will
be presented on the white board for the students.
Students will return their papers to the original owners when they have
completed the grading and grades will not be recorded this time.
To begin the lesson on new material, the teacher will present the students
with the new terms they will be learning in the next section.
o Dilation
o Transformation
o Scale factor or a dilation
o k
o reduction
o enlargement
Students will be asked to take notes on the new terms and definitions while
the teacher is putting them on the white board.
The teacher will the use the geogebra app on their ipad in order to visually
represent the dilations of some figures.
The teacher will use the app to help the students answer questions that the
teacher has asked of them.
The teacher will pull two to five of the questions from the nights assigned
homework to do with the class on the board/app.
The students will then be given time to work in small groups to start on their
work for the night.

Homework:

Homework has already been assigned and passed out at the beginning of the
trimester. Students will be reminded to look at their green sheets for the homework
that is due the next day.
Closure:
Students will be reminded that this was the final section in the chapter and that the
beginning of next week will be review before their test on Weds. The teacher will
then hand out a study review guide for the final exam that will be taken the
following week. The teacher will end with a reminder that they have a full week of
study before the final exam and that they will need to take full advantage of that
time in order to be successful.
