Statement of the Town of Alexandria
In December the Town learned that certain work performed by Town employees atthe Chamber
of Commerce Building in Alexandria Bay may have caused the disturbance of asbestos materials
in the building. Upon learning ofthe concems, the Town immediately advised Engineer Rob
Campany, of Fourth Coast Inc. ~ St. Lawrence Engineering ofthe matter. Mr. Campany
inspected the site that day, and contacted Adirondack Operstions, an environmental consulting
firm with extensive experience in asbestos matters to conduct an assessment. Adirondack
Operations commenced the assessment on December 22, and made a visual assessment which
identified disturbed material onthe second floor of the building. Adirondack Operations also
conducted air sampling on the first and second floors ofthe building; all ofthe samples collected
swore found tobe below the clearance threshold. Adirondack Operations submitted repott to
the Town on December 28, stating that the disturbed msteral consists of bulk verriculite fil
insulation,
(On December 29, an application was submitted to the New York Department of Labor fora
cleanup of th disturbed area on the second floor and around an exterior dumpster where
disturbed material had been deposited. The application was granted on December 30. The Town
isin the process of reviewing proposals from approved asbestos contractors to perform the
cleanup of the disturbed area on the second floor and the dumpster as soon as possible,
(On January 4, the Town arranged for medical testing of Town employees who were involved in
the work at the Chamber of Commerce Building. To date, the employees have declined to
‘undergo the testing,
‘The intention ofthe Town Board is to then proceed with a full remediation ofall potential
asbestos materials in the Chamber of Commerce Building.
