Subi shops

Whiskey a lifesaver

Liz Jackman says a dog
named Whiskey saved her
former soldier husbands life.
My husband Scott was in the
8th/9th Battalion of the Royal
Australian Regiment, Liz said.
After he got back from
Afghanistan he suffered from
post-traumatic stress disorder.
He was self-medicating and
became an alcoholic.
But Whiskey got him out of
bed and out in public again.
Whiskey saved his life as far
as Im concerned.
The experience inspired Liz
and others to start Whiskeys
Wish, which trains support dogs
and gives them to armed forces
veterans and emergency workers.
Last Friday in Cottesloe, Liz
and co-founder Marilyn Kench
handed over Gypsy, a 6-monthold red heeler, to Tina Webster.
Premier Colin Barnett was
at the Sea View Golf Club
ceremony and was impressed
to learn about Whiskeys Wish
and its achievements.

The POST is local and relevant with the highest readership in the Western Suburbs. See www.postnewspapers.com.au
Each week 52,000 copies of the POST are distributed, reaching every household and business in the western suburbs.
These suburbs are shown on the map on page 2. Extra copies are delivered to other selected riverside suburbs.
Why do complainers
live by Showgrounds?
In response to Claremont residents complaining about the noise levels of the recent
Origin Festival at the Showgrounds (Origin
antics upset locals, POST, January 9).
Were you never young once?
Were you never a little bit loud and raucous
in your younger years?
Did you never enjoy partying and letting
your hair down once in a while, or have you
always been full-time members of the fun
police?
When you bought your properties and chose
to live near the Showgrounds, you would have
been well aware that there would be several
noisy events taking place there throughout
the year.
But you still made the choice to live there
and subsequently complain.
The noise from the Perth Royal Show goes
on a lot longer and, to my mind, is a lot more
irritating than one night of music, yet few
people ever complain about that.
I laughed when I read that residents felt
they had to stay up to take care of their
homes on the night of the concert.
Take care of them from what?
From people walking down the street?
Why are you so afraid of young people?
In the grand scheme of things, the number
of events you have to tolerate over the course
of the year is minimal.
If you hate it that much, then plan to be
away at such times.

Quay targets
The Barnett government is
looking for Chinese money
to help develop Elizabeth
Quay.
One of the lots in the 10ha
site has already been sold to
Chevron for its Asia-Pacific
HQ, though Chevron asked
to delay this project for two
years last October.
The Hong Kong-listed developer Far East Consortium
plans to build a Ritz Carlton

block on the eastern side of
the new inlet.
The Metropolitan
Redevelopment Authority
has also produced English and
Chinese versions of a brochure
for two lots on the opposite
(western) side of the inlet with
high rise of up to 25 storeys.
Last July, the MRA began
a secretive process to pick a
winning bid for what would
go on the two blocks and who
would build it.
That process was due to finish this month.
Elizabeth Quay will officially
open to the public on Friday,

disastrous
Seaward
decision
this week
By LINDA CALLAGHAN
The man reviewing plans to
sell part of the SAS Seaward
Village at Swanbourne said
he and his family once lived
in army housing.
Retired Lieutenant General
Mark Evans said he would make
his decision about the redevelopment plan by the weekend,
but it would take him time to
write a report for the Minister.
I will have made a decision
by the end of the week, he said
in Swanbourne on Monday.
I have already had about 35
submissions from organisations
and individuals.
Lieutenant General Evans was
appointed by Assistant Defence
Minister Darren Chester to a review the plan by the government
business unit, Defence Housing
Australia, because of increasing
concern about security if part
of the village next to Campbell
Barracks were sold for private
housing.
Liberal MP Andrew Hastie,
a former SAS officer, met
Lieutenant General Evans on
Monday.
He said the plan could affect
national security.
Lieutenant General Evans
said he was familiar with the
area.
I lived in Kelmscott when
I first moved to Australia, he
said.
Curtin MP and Foreign Affairs
Minister Julie Bishop met
Lieutenant General Evans at
the entrance to the village but
refused to go farther in or be
photographed with him near
one of the houses because she
said it would be an invasion of
residents privacy.
A former Sandhurst-trained
member of the British Army,
Lieutenant General Evans
worked on counter-terrorism in
Northern Ireland before moving to Australia and joining the
army here.
I tried out for the SAS but
failed the test to get in, he said.
His review coincides with a
second investigation ordered by
the Senate into how DHA works.
Stephen Conroy, Deputy
Leader of the Opposition in
demic studies.
They were a wonderful group
and the excellent results are
well deserved, she said.
Seventy-five students scored
an ATAR of more than 90.
Certificates of distinction were
awarded to 11 JTC students who
were in the states top 0.5% for
individual course results.
Another 13 were awarded
certificates of commendation
for having achieved at least 20
A-grades during Years 11 and 12.
ATAR scores are based on
students best four subjects.
They allow colleges and universities to compare students.

Councils wake up to
local short-term stays
By JACOB NAZROO
Rental website Airbnb shows
about 300 homes and apartments in the western suburbs
that are available to rent.
There are also about 120
single rooms and two shared
rooms on the site.
Property owners list their
homes, or just rooms, for rent
and the site now has 1.5million
listings in 34,000 cities and 190
countries.
The website advises hosts to
contact their councils to clarify
local rules on short-term rental.
If they allow it at all, Perth
councils often set conditions
before allowing residents to
let their homes or rooms for
accommodation.
Most would-be hosts need
council permission first.
A Mosman Park council
spokesperson said it had not
received any Airbnb host applications for the many properties
for rent in the town.
Stirling council said it had no
applications for Churchlands
or Woodlands.
Subiaco said it had not received any applications, but
noted that short-term lessors
did not need council permission
to host four or fewer people for
up to three consecutive months.
Ian Bignell, from Cambridge
council, said the town knew
there were Airbnb listings in
the town, but addressing the
issue had not been actively
considered.
Nedlands planning director
Peter Mickelson said the council
probably knew nothing about
the many listings in the city.

People with mental health

Julie Matheson, who lives
close to the Department of

not retired people, is causing
problems.
She points to drug dealing,
vandalism including car tyres
being slashed and even the use
of fire hoses to flood lift shafts
over Christmas as evidence of
a breakdown in the flats.
Ms Matheson wrote to Housing
Minister Colin Holt last month

In accordance with Section 3.12 of the Local Government
Act 1995, public notice is hereby given that the Town

amendment to the Beaches and Beach Reserves Local Law.

the government-appointed to

Riverside Drive.
Curiously, the consultants
were briefed not to include
the impact of any future traffic resulting from the massive
amount of new office buildings
proposed for the CBD.
Even without accounting for
future traffic volumes, they still
advised that rerouting Riverside
Drive would result in serious
traffic congestion in and around
the city, as far afield as Manning
Road, Como.
Their report was tabled in
Parliament and largely ignored.
Serious congestion has now
occurred in the city and will
continue to increase.

ottesloe resident Julie Hillin was awestruck by the sight of the massive cloud of smoke billowing over
Coldstream Highway, near Collie, last Thursday, from the Waroona bushfire in the South-West. Julie
stopped on her way home from the South-West to take this photo. By the weekend, the full extent of the
Waroona bushfire had destroyed 170 properties and 71,000ha, and all but wiped out the town of Yarloop.

Croquet club
rockets into a
new decade
Rocketball, the croquet equivalent of
crickets T20, is one of the revolutionary ways Cambridge Croquet Club has
become the biggest in WA since it began
The fast game, played to music and flashing
lights, dispels any stuffy image people may
have of the game of croquet.
Rocketball has been a great success with
the girls from St Hildas and the boys of Hale,
said club captain Brian Hadley, a former state
coach and club champion.
You have 10 seconds to take your shot or
you lose it. You can play 20 hoops in 15 to 20
minutes, which young people love.
Brian said the croquet club, which is in
Chandler Avenue West in Floreat, started a
year of celebrations for its 10th birthday with
a breakfast last Sunday.
The Cambridge club began controversially
it was an amalgamation of the former Floreat
and Leederville croquet clubs but has thrived
since the first game was played on the greens
10 years ago last weekend.
The business plan we presented then to
Cambridge council has more than come to
fruition, Brian said. The council has been
a terrific supporter.
The club is highly sustainable and is the
WA club of choice for national and international events.
In September, we will host the Australian
croquet golf championships.
Brian said the club had produced its share of
state coaches, captains and players, with five
club players in the current state croquet golf
squad and one in the state association team,
another form of croquet.
He said the club had been innovative from
the start, getting a liquor licence, wi-fi and
encouraging venue hire to provide an income.

The pennant season
and the mid-week
teams had various
degrees of success
last week.
The ladies premier
side gained 5.5pts
against Gosnells,
but the other ladies
teams were not as
lucky and didnt collect any points.
The mid-week men
fared better, with division 1 scoring 6pts
against Rossmoyne
and division 4 gaining 5pts.
Last Wednesdays
scroungers saw some
old overseas friends
return for their annual visit as well as
new people hoping to
play bowls.
The finalists were
Sue Barnes, Ian
Flack, Fiona Epis,
Margaret Holbrook
and Bob Wilcox, and
the joint winners
were Sue and Fiona.
Sue will be leaving soon to return
to the UK where she
will continue playing in the leagues in
Hampshire.
The Saturday pennant teams produced
some good results,
including the mens
division 1 gaining
8pts and division 3
gaining the upper
hand with neighbours, Claremont,
with 7pts.
The mens division
5 and the ladies division 3 teams didnt
manage any points,
but the ladies division 1 team struggled
to score 3pts.

The young players were back-stage when
Nick Kyrgios and Daria Gavrilova were about
to play their mixed doubles and had the chance
to get some high fives from the stars.
Laura Bantock and Jake Smethurst had
the thrill of tossing the coin for the evening
match between Australia Gold and the Czech
Republic, while Lucy and Noah Quinlan
tossed the coin when Australia Gold played
the Ukraine.
The Hot Shot program at Reabold will start

Australia Day
starts early
National Australia Day Council CEO Jeremy
Lasek wants people to start Australia Day by
celebrating at work in the week leading up to
the Australia Day holiday.
Workplaces are an ideal reflection of the
diversity of Australia and a great place to
appreciate what we all have in common,
Mr Lasek said.
We all have different experiences of being
Australian where we grew up, our family
histories, our cultures, if we chose to become
Australian and why.
Its a great opportunity to find out more
about your work colleagues and share what
youre all proud of.
He suggested morning tea, a barbecue or
special event between January 20 and 26.
You could host an Australian themed trivia
game, play some cricket or even dress up as
great Australians, he said.
To ensure your Australia Day at Work event
is part of the official Australia Day celebrations, remember to take a photo and post it
on Twitter using #australiaday so everyone
can see how you mark the occasion.
Events can be registered in advance at
australiadayatwork.com.au.

Ask
Ellie
Welcome to TimeOuts
new columnist Ellie. Ellie
has a masters degree
in sociology, has been a
case worker with foster
children and worked as
a journalist and editor for
25 years. She is happily
married with two adult
children and three adult
stepchildren.
My husband
and I separated
a month after
our wedding
last year. Wed
regularly expressed our
deep mutual love, but
during our engagement,
we experienced work
stress, family illnesses
and drama.
We sought individual
counselling and saw a
relationship counsellor
together, which revealed
in-depth details of my
husbands childhood.
His family history
is riddled with abuse,
betrayal, mental illness,
and divorce.
He feels he has to be
the caregiver for his
whole family and please
everyone to maintain
equilibrium, even at the
expense of our happiness.
Unfortunately, I didnt
understand this.
Our final argument was
explosive on my part, but
never violent, yet I was
asked to leave the marital
home we shared with my
mother-in-law.
For six months, I
tried to communicate
my willingness to work
things out while also
giving my husband space.
Suddenly, he pressured
me to sign a separation
agreement. He became
hostile, angry, verbally
hurtful, then stopped
communicating.
He has to be
the one to reach
you. Currently, its easier
for him to blame all that
went wrong on you. As
you describe things, its
how this family carries
on without changing any
dysfunctional behaviour.
He has to recognise
that this keeps him from
the kind of love he once
felt for you and from
creating his own, different
story.
You cant return to that
toxic scene unless he breaks
away completely. And that
may not be possible.
When a toxic family
rules, the adult child must
break away to save the
marriage.
Meanwhile, move on.
Be open to new dating
possibilities and eventually
a new, healthy relationship.

Christmas after 12 years in business.
Another womens clothing store
in Forrest Walk, Woah Gypsy, is
having a closing-down sale.
Mr Burnett said shopkeepers
were going through some tough
times and big changes.
Unfortunately, its the world of
retail, he said. Its not Rokeby
Road, its everywhere, and the face
of retail is changing.
Twenty years ago it was mum
and dad shoe shops, dress shops
and mens shops. Now theyve
gone and the doctors surgeries
and accountants staff have filled
that space.
But theyre starting to disappear
now because people are going online to do their tax and all that sort
of stuff, so its a different world.
I dont know what the answer
is in some of these spaces, but the
shops might be the wrong shape
or size for some people. But well

Do we need
Fast 4 tennis?
Understandably in awe of
the success of the T20 cricket
phenomenon, if the tennis
authorities arent thinking it,
theyre hoping it.
Tennis Australia has released
Fast 4 Tennis, a new, exciting,
supercharged version of the
game.
Like its T20 cricket cousin,
the rules are much the same as
regular tennis, save a couple of
novelty variations.
And as with cricket, its less
about the result, and loads more
about fun, fun, and more fun.
The fun ran unchecked when
local hero Lleyton Hewitt took
on Spanish heartthrob Rafael
Nadal in a Fast 4 match.
There was none of this monotonous deuce, advantage server,
deuce, advantage server stuff
that can have such a detrimental psychological effect both
courtside and on TV viewers,
as well as throwing schedules
out of kilter.
The mind plays havoc and
delusions set in by the fifth set
when the score reaches 16-all.
But with Fast 4, the first player
to win four points wins the game.
As with T20, tennis administrators have guaranteed crowd
involvement and its wondrous
to behold.
The punters have been provided no doubt free of charge
with tennis ball-shaped batons
matching the colours of the competing players, and are encouraged to wave them vigorously to
show support for their man on
the occasion of line disputes.
Now I admit that I only
switched to Channel Seven
during a couple of ad breaks (in
the James Garner cowboy flick I
was watching) and I could have
easily spotted a few more purlers in the revolutionary move to
bring tennis into the fast lane.
Mr Bad Example, Nick Kyrgios, and the ancient gladiator Lleyton Hewitt teamed up for some tennis fun.

Hi Kids
Kids,
I just love Charlie McCalls rainbow pixel bird.
Charlie (7), from Nedlands, is
one of our major Doodlebug winners
this week.
The colours he has used are amazing and the squared off sun and cloud
are great ideas.
Scarlett Liston (9), from Subiaco,
is the other big Doodlebug winner.
Whats not to love about those
cute penguins? They are all looking
particularly dapper in their various
bow ties and vests. Even the newly
hatched!
Im always amazed at the clever
ideas you all come up with.

construction site was beautifully done
and Bens submarine was cruising

Ruby went wild with her colourful

looked very exciting.
Lydias giraffe was enjoying a
