PUBLISHERS LETTER

I am going to keep this one

short and sweet.

I want to answer one of those late

night party, pub, or bar questions that

help us all pass the time and break
awkward silence.

If you could be any rock star,

who would you be and why?

Who:
Warren Zevon.
Why:
Warren was not the best by any
means, but he might have had one
of the best souls.
He had the energy that only a few
people possess, and of which others
could only dream.
He might not have had the looks or
the best skill, but those with the best
looks and skills wanted to play with him.
He never stopped until the
very end.
Who could forget his songs
Werewolves of London, Lawyers,
Guns and Money, Excitable Boy,
and all the rest?
Its funny how life works out. No
one ever told me I was going to be
a 37-year-old newspaper boy when
I grew up, delivering copies of Radius
to the towns listed here at 5 a.m.
But I wouldnt trade the feeling I get

dropping off the finished copies for

anything, because I know more and
more of the best emerging writers
and artists want to work with us.
Thanks for reading, and have
a great 2016. DP

There are two types of pet insurance

policies: wellness and accident/illness.
Wellness policies are less common, and
may include coverage for annual services
like vaccinations and preventative testing.
These costs can be anticipated, and are
expected each year. In contrast, accident/
illness policies cover illnesses that
are unexpected and can be expensive.
These events are the reason most
owners consider pet insurance. In the
event of an emergency, pet insurance
is there to bridge the gap between the
high standard of care pet owners want
for their pet and what they can afford.
No one knows when an accident
or illness will occur, so the best time to
purchase insurance is when your pet is
young. This not only covers her early,
it also keeps her from being denied
coverage later due to a pre-existing
condition. That does not mean that
older pets cant be insured! They can
and should be covered as soon as
possible. Many policies can be tailored
to specific pets so premiums can be
lowered. These adjustments include
changing the annual coverage amount,
increasing the deductible, or choosing
a lower reimbursement percentage.

It is important to understand that pet

insurance works as a reimbursement
plan between the insurance company
and the pet owner. This differs from the
third-party plans we are familiar with
in human healthcare that involve your
doctor billing your insurance company.
In general, a pet owner pays the
veterinarian, and then submits a simple
claim form to his or her insurance
company for reimbursement. Some
companies require a veterinarians
signature on the claim.
There are many different companies
offering different policies and premiums,
but some may not be perfect for you
and your pet. It is important to do your
research and talk to your veterinarian
about his or her recommendations.
Dr. Doug Kenney, a Tennessee
veterinarian, has an informative site
petinsuranceguideus.comto help
guide your research. | r

MUSIC
RYAN BINGHAM

The long road taken by country singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham

has seen its fair share of bumps and holes, dark clouds, and rainy
days. Much has been said about his pastleaving his parents to join
the rodeo circuit before he was 20, living out of his truck, and even
losing his parents to alcoholism and suicide.

Clearer
Skies Ahead
1 6 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

But through it all, Bingham has

risen to become one of the hottest
new country artists. After working with
the famous T Bone Burnett on The
Weary Kid, a song for the 2009 movie
Crazy Heart that won multiple awards,
Bingham has gone on to release a
number of critically acclaimed albums.
His latest, Fear and Saturday Night,
was released around this time last year.
On the final day of January, Bingham
makes his way to Philadelphia for a
performance at the Theatre of Living
Arts (TLA) in support of his most
recent album. We caught up with
the country star during the busy and
hectic holiday season to chat about his
newest record, as well as the addition
of a new family member, and its effect
on his musical career.
Its still so new. It makes you look a lot
further down the road, Bingham explains,
as we discuss the ways in which the
newest member of his family has changed
the shape of his life. This past year he and
his wife, Anna Axster, welcomed a new
baby daughter into this world.
He is not shy to admit that there are
times on the road where the outlook
can be a little narrow.
I think playing music sometimes,
especially touring night to night,
radiusmag.com

things can get a bit short-sighted when

youre living from one day to the next,
one gig after the other, said Bingham.
When the days all start to blend
together, he just thinks about his wife
and daughter in Santa Monica.
Its nice to look a little further down
the road at a family waiting for you
when you get home. Its been really
nice, he said.
Fear and Saturday Night marks
another first for Bingham and Axster,
the debut release from their new label,
Axster Bingham Records. While there
are no immediate plans to bring on
other artists, there is still a heavy
workload for the couple. Right now
weve been concentrating on just
17

MUSIC
RYAN BINGHAM

getting this stuff rolling and really

building it up, Bingham details. This
is probably going to be it for the next
year or so.
One of the more poignant songs
on the album, Broken Heart Tattoo,
is a tune Bingham penned to his then
unborn child. We were talking about
having kid, and it just came out of that
conversation.
To come up with Broken Heart
Tattoo and the other songs that
make up Fear and Saturday Night,
Bingham took a different approach,
secluding himself amid a more natural
environment. After finding a classic
silver airstream trailer available to rent,
Bingham pounced on the chance
to disconnect himself from the busy
day-to-day.
We found a guy with some land
up in the mountains that he rents out,
Bingham remembers. It was a really
great hideout, especially if you are
a writer. Its up in the mountains and
you just camp out, and get isolated
and away from distractions.
Despite escaping to a wilderness
retreat, Binghans songwriting still
had its challenges.

Its nice to look a little

further down the road at
a family waiting for you
when you get home.
1 8 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

Ive always felt that if

I dont believe it, how
can I expect anyone
else to believe it?

I know it took me several days

to get that first song going, he recalls.
But as more and more began to fall
into place, the focus then turned to
the record as a whole. Once the first
song came, the ideas started coming
together and I started looking at
everything as an album, and not
individual songs.
Real, everyday life has been a major
cornerstone in many of Binghams
past albums, and the same holds true
for Fear and Saturday Night.
I just try to let the ideas come
from experiences and things that are
still natural and organic, Bingham
says. I just try to write them down as
you would say them in a conversation,
and then fine tune them from there.
Not forcing any thoughts matters
deeply to him. Ive always felt that
if I dont believe it, how can I expect
anyone else to believe it?
With his latest record in hand,
Bingham has been steadily touring to
share the new songs with his devoted
fans. City after city, people have been
coming in droves. Its been a really good
tour. A lot of the shows sold out and the
crowds have all been great, he said.

Behind the scenes, things run smoother

than ever. A few years back, Bingham
decided to pick up a completely new cast
of members for his backing band, and
after having time to jell, they collectively
function like a well-oiled machine. Ive
been inspired by the way they play,
said Bingham. And theyre really good
people to hang out with on the road.
The time spent out on the road
has also helped spark ideas for new
songs, whether from Bingham or his
band members.
There have been times in the past
where everybody kind of does their
own thing. But we all have been having
a blast sitting up in the front playing
some mandolin and guitars, just playing
music, he said.
After a few weeks off to celebrate
the holidays with his family, Bingham
is ready to hit the road again. The
next leg of the tour takes him through
Texas and the Midwest before trekking
through the East Coast. With the
way things have been going in 2015,
Bingham is eagerly awaiting returning
to the stage. Its been great, Im really
looking forward to this next run.
With a head full of steam, and a
great group of supporters and band
mates around him, Bingham looks
to pick up right where he left off.
We all feel really lucky to be able
to get out there and go do it. Its been
a blast!
Be sure to catch Ryan Bingham as he
makes his way to the TLA on Jan. 31. | r

A Fresh Take on
Interior Design
Melinda and Hal Kuehne, owners and founders of Gracious Living
Interiors, previously known as Heart of America, welcome you to
their newest reveal, GL HOME. The revamp of Gracious Living Interiors
has produced a thoughtfully assembled collection of furnishings,
art, drapes and accessories, all professionally displayed in their
newly remodeled room settings.
The Kuehnes have kept their
customer in mind, so they can explore
the collections at leisure along with
considering custom design services.
From indoor and outdoor settings to
homes and offices, GL HOME goes
beyond your expectations to provide
the inspiration needed to create the
room of your dreams.
The Kuehnes collection began in 1975,
while Hal and Melinda attended college
at Susquehanna University, where they
both had a passion for creating. They
opened their first store in 1983, and have
developed many showrooms along the
way. In this latest step on their design
journey, Melinda and Hal Kuehne have
come up with a refreshingly new look
thats in touch with todays lifestyle,
blending old world and modern designs.
2 6 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

Upon entering the new 10,000

square foot store, one is greeted by the
drama of the handsomely decorated
Great Room, with an innovative
open floor plan that allows the light to
reflect from the 20-foot high ceilings
and accent the furniture displayed. Its
a carefully selected collection from all
of their resources, as well as their own
custom upholstery. The inspiration
for the room comes from their clients
homes, from chateaus to cottages,
from the country to the shore, and
now, a new generation of buyers is
flooding in after moving into their own
homes, and theyre eager to fill them
with comfortable, practical, and unique
furnishings.
When it came to redecorating
each display room at GL HOME,

Melinda and Hal Kuehne have come

up with a refreshingly new look thats
in touch with todays lifestyle.

Melinda found inspiration from

everything around her, and allowed
her imagination to go beyond merely
furniture. While relaxing on the beach
last summer, she spoke about finding
inspiration from the color of her
friends bathing suit.
The hue is stunning, Melinda told
her friend. You just inspired a room
for me!
The color scheme was later used
in her Spa Bath room, which features
a European soaking tub, and embraces
a true passion for creating special
rooms. The rich topaz color accentuates
the evening gown dressed windows,
with their sparkling crystal accents.
Often when designing a room,
one doesnt realize the amount of
creativity that goes beyond simply
radiusmag.com

picking out furniture to make a room

successful. Finding a unique use
for everyday furniture is a talent GL
HOME has mastered for their clients.
For many people, the dining room is
only enjoyed at the holidays, but GL
HOME encourages its use day to day.
GL HOMEs re-invented dining area
is now called the Soulful Library. The
inclusion of a bar fronted by a built-in
fireplace, and unexpected industrial
lighting, completes the warm ambience
for this welcoming space to be enjoyed
on any occasion.
With an inspirational theme to every
room, its no wonder their signature
bedrooms are acclaimed by many. The
Kuehnes have designed and decorated
rooms that have been featured in
national magazines, coffee table books,

and designer show houses. They were

also featured on HGTVs Valentine
special, The Top Ten Most Romantic
Bedrooms. A popular room at GL
HOME is their Wedgwood Master
bedroom with French Blue-colored
walls, ceiling, and trim, using shades
that have been customer favorites
for the past 30 years.
The furniture placed in their store
comes from all over the country, and
each piece is unique.
You go into your neighbors house,
and you see that they have the same
furniture from a catalog, observed
Melinda. Because of this, GL HOME
deals with many smaller companies that
have the ability to customize, making
a true home, and thats what sets them
apart from other furniture stores.
2 8 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

GL HOME prides itself on being

more than a furniture showroom.
Its a lifestyle store. Their inclusion
of specially selected couture faux fur
coats, gloves and hats for the winter,
along with other seasonable attire,
adds to selections that compliment
their passion for living graciously.
The updated GL HOME evokes an
atmosphere that must be experienced
in person. With so many thoughtfully
designed display roomsfrom
their French macaroon-inspired
Conservatory, and lower level Club
Dubois (or from the woods after
the middle name of Melindas father)
featuring a shuffleboard table, media
center and fireplace, to The Design
Lounge workroomthis is a great
place from which to learn and to have
your dreams become a reality beyond
your expectations.
GL HOME is definitely a design
resource to keep an eye on because
the innovation and inspiration on
view are ever changing and seem
without limit. | r

COVER ARTIST

From Painter to
Printmaker: A Look
at Susan Rosemans
Artie Art

3 4 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

Susan Roseman began creating Artie Art in 2012, and has only looked forward
as this unexpected blend of humor and art developed into a line of cards, gifts,
papers, and party goods that combine fun with sentiment and charm.
Her early influences include Jon
Gnagy, Winky Dink and You, The
Bertie the Bunyip Show, and Kukla,
Fran and Ollie. The funny thing is that
she did not realize it until she began
creating Artie Art.
All those dogs that I have at the
tables are puppet-like to me. Growing
up, puppets were everywhere,on
TV, at the fairs, and always were a
childhood favorite which is why I find
inspiration in some early kids TV
shows, said Roseman.
Printmaking at the Pennsylvania
Academy of Fine Arts with printmakers
Dan Miller and Morris Blackburn had a
big impact on my art through my choice
of medium, Roseman continued. I went
from painter to printmaker. Roseman
says she is also awed and inspired by the
work of Palle Nielsen.
Rosemans brand of colorful, witty
and endlessly creative art has become
popular in other arenas, too. Artie Art
was selected for inclusion in the book
Art Dogs: 100 Postcards by Robynne
Raye. Her work is available at various
stores throughout Pennsylvania, New
York and New Jersey. And she has a
popular Etsy shop at www.etsy.com/
shop/ArtieArtCards where one can
view a number of photos displaying
her hand-carved stamps, which she
uses to create her various pieces.
radiusmag.com

When Rosemans dog Artie passed

away, he became her inspiration for
Artie Art. Artie was a therapy dog,
companion, loyal friend and muchloved canine member of Rosemans
family. Every Tuesday, and on
holidays, Artie and Rosemans other
dogs would visit a local nursing
home. The four dogs would ride in
a wheelchair throughout, and Artie
was the leader, teacher and ham.
He had charm, personality and
attitude, and brought a smile to the
face of everyone he met. His spirit,
determination and drive motivated
Roseman to create a line of cards,
and dedicate them to him.
From there, Roseman gradually
began making other items, all
featuring Artie, which have helped
build the brand that is thriving today.
That brand, and the products she
creates, have organically blended her
art, humor and so much more in
a unique marketing mixture.
Roseman says she has been
involved in the arts and with dogs
all of her life.
Inspiration comes from our daily
lives, and puts a little veneer of humor
on the days events, she observed.
Sometimes surprises, sometimes
poetry, often times a laugh, are reasons
to share.

COVER ARTIST

Inspiration comes from our daily lives, and puts

a little veneer of humor on the days events.

I relish the captivating canine

spirits Ive known and loved, and the
variety of creative responses they
inspire, continued Roseman. Artie
Art is about sharing that with everyone
in an endless trove of serialized fun.
When asked what she enjoyed most
about creating this form of art, Susan
replied, The humor and the great
visuals of the characters is whats
most enjoyable. I love developing a
long list of working dogs to bring my
connections with these mixed mutts
to life with compassion and originality
to the story.
It is said that the cultural value
of storytelling is centered on
conversation, sharing and caring.
Roseman as a visual storyteller
embodies that cultural belief,
understanding that artistic meaning
can resonate beyond language. In
this artists case, it is all about the
animals. She remains grateful that
she is able to share her images
with rescue groups and shelters
3 6 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

radiusmag.com

for their use in educational and

promotional purposes. To that point,
her work currently lines the walls
of Opportunity Barks Behavior &
Training in Philadelphia.
Roseman lives with her artist
husband, and is constantly jotting
down ideas and sketches for use as
material for projects. A part of being
successful, especially in her business
and having an Etsy store, is in always
trying to keep the content current
and peppered with a sense of humor.
You gotta have fun, observed
Roseman, and the sentiment rings
true in how she chooses to live her
life. Less useful are the slings and
arrows of uncertain fortune in pursuit
of techno-competence and monetary
gain, she adds.
With positivity and absolute
creativity, she creates and surrounds
herself with dynamic images that
exude her joy, humor, and happiness.
All of the things she has worked
towards have surpassed her goals, she
says, and at the same time pay a loving
tribute to canines everywhere.
Rosemans linocuts will be on
display throughout February at Max
Hansen Carversville Grocery, 6208
Fleecy Dale Road, in Carversville,
Pennsylvania. For more information,

HEALTHCARE
COSMETIC SURGERY SPECIALISTS

Cosmetic Surgery Specialists offer

world-renowned care right
in Bucks County

You can achieve great

results with subtlety.

The office of Cosmetic Surgery Specialists (CSS) doesnt feel like its located
inside a hospital. The practice, housed in the St. Clare building at St. Mary
Medical Center, is decorated with a welcoming mix of rustic colors and brocade
patterns reminiscent of the spirit of Bucks County.

Youre a guest in my home here.

Well treat you that way, says leading
surgeon Dr. Alan Brackup. The
atmosphere is absent the coldness
of a typical surgical setting, and the
small staff of 10 is specialized in
cosmetic facial plastic surgery and
aesthetics. Medical grade skin care
and fat reduction procedures are
also offered under the guidance
of the first physician in the United
States to be board-certified in
both ophthalmology and facial
cosmetic surgery.
For Brackup, cosmetic surgery
is an art. His goal is for patients
to receive results that embody an
enhancement that looks completely
natural, he says. You can achieve
great results with subtlety.
4 4 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

With a wide array of available

options, Brackup offers an assortment
of procedures that can be utilized
on a case-by-case basis.
When it comes to aging, theres
a combination of factors, he explained.
Fillers may suit one patient, but
surgery may yield better results for
another. The beauty of this field is
that there is no one right answer for
every individual.
Brackup started his practice more
than 25 years ago, specializing in
cosmetic surgery and eye and facial
reconstructive surgery. He has an
equal number of years working with
injectable treatments, and considers
it a delicate procedure.
Its essential to see someone
who understands facial aging, who

understands aesthetics, in order to

get the best input on what is going
to work for you, he said.
Brackup has continued to see the
commoditization of non-surgical
cosmetic care give these procedures
a bad name. CSS frequently sees
patients disenchanted with results of
procedures performed elsewhere, often
at practices promoting their low prices.
You want to say, Its your face!
Youre going to try and save a few
dollars and risk looking absurd?
exclaimed Brackup. Our patients
appreciate the difference.
He is always on the leading edge,
says Katie Hooven, a nurse who has
worked with Brackup for four years.
She was interested in working with
Brackup because of his experience
radiusmag.com

and history with latest advances in

plastic surgery. As a medical student
and resident at Stanford in the 1980s,
he was exposed to the first collagen
fillers, and was among the first to
perform cosmetic filler injections. As
a fellow in oculofacial plastic surgery,
he also participated in the clinical
trials with botulinum toxin (now
known as Botox) prior to its receiving
FDA approval.
Now, he is a requested speaker at
U.S. and international cosmetic surgery
conferences, most recently serving on
a panel in Monaco. Brackup is seeing
more and more patients traveling from
around the world to visit his Bucks
County practice.
Brackup was initially drawn to the
basic medical sciences. He spent
a year working with the heart-lung
transplant team at Stanford. Ultimately,
Brackup decided he was more excited
about surgery than the lab, and chose
to specialize in ophthalmology. While
he acquired his fine-tuned skills from
this area of medicine, he realized early
on that it would not be his lifes work.
You deal in microns, in fractions
of millimeters, Brackup observed.
The need for precision is great, but
there is little room for creativity.

HEALTHCARE
COSMETIC SURGERY SPECIALISTS

The key is designing

a procedure that
is both functional
and cosmetically
excellent.

He followed his residency at

Stanford with a fellowship in oculofacial
plastic surgery, which synthesized the
knowledge base of ophthalmology
with the field of plastic surgery. Here
he found an answer to his own creative
and professional needs.
The key is designing a procedure
that is both functional and cosmetically
excellent, he said. For Brackup, the field
blends science with elegance, a marriage
of form and function with beauty.
The most commonly performed
cosmetic procedures at CSS
include eyelid surgery, facelifts,
endoscopic brow lifts, and laser skin
enhancement.
One of the most significant trends
of the past five years according to
Brackup has been the introduction
4 6 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

of noninvasive technology into

a field previously offering only
surgical options. At CSS, Brackup has
painstakingly researched the options
available to offer only those he feels
are scientifically sound and clinically
efficacious. Currently, the most popular
of these are nonsurgical, no-downtime
procedures for wrinkle reduction, skin
tightening, and fat melting.
Among these is the Vanquish ME,
a technology that uses radiofrequency
waves as a painless alternative to
liposuction. The Vanquish ME is
indicated for circumferential fat
reduction on the abdomen, along with
the inner and outer thighs.
Outstanding results in skin
enhancement are also now possible.
The Infini device available at CSS

reduces wrinkles, and tightens and lifts

the skin of the face and body. It is also
considered a state-of-the-art treatment
for acne scarring. With such advances
in both surgical and noninvasive
options, Brackup says, This is an
exciting time to be a patient.
Throughout his career, Brackup has
never strayed far from his academic
roots. His efforts have been recognized
by his peers with his selection as a Castle
Connolly Top Doctor in the U.S. Brackup
is also a clinical assistant professor at
the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine, and continues to publish
articles and book chapters in medical
literature outlets.
Brackups interest in writing parallels
his perpetual quest for new, innovative
methods of achieving better results.
radiusmag.com

You need to be creative in terms

of how you look at individuals, and
in how you solve problems, he said.
But in the end, your methods must
be based upon a solid scientific
foundation. | r

Mr. Copacabana: The story of the

genius who created Manhattans
legendary nightclub and raised
a family in Bucks County
Backstage at the Copa
(Photo by Stanley Kubrick for Life Magazine, 1948).

Its 1969, the year of

Apollo 11, Woodstock,
and the Miracle Mets.
Mr. Copacabana
author Jim Proser is 16
years old. Hes working
at Mels Restaurant on West Mechanic
Street in New Hope, P.A., and caring
for his injured father Monte a block
away at the Logan Inn.
Three teenagers in Trenton had
recently mugged Monte, creator of the
legendary Copacabana nightclub in
New York City. The younger Proser
fears for his fathers lifeMonte has no
overt enemies, but he has more than
a few mob members in his social circle.
Flash back another 30 years, and
a much younger Monte Proser is in
the process of making the Zombie

cocktail the unexpected hit of the 1939

Worlds Fair, and helping usher in the
tiki bar trend that would last nearly four
decades. He limits cocktail purchases
at his booth to only one per customer,
and by the time the Worlds Fair ends,
Monte Proser is sitting on a pile of cash.
He decides to open a nightclub.
The Copacabana opened in
Manhattan in 1940, and combined
the Polynesian themes and exotic
rum drinks of tiki/beachcomber
culture with Brazilian decor and Latin
orchestras. The Copacabana Girls
of the chorus sported extravagant
costumes and fruited turbans in the
style of Carmen Miranda.
The list of entertainers who launched
their careers at the club includes
Sammy Davis Jr., Martin and Lewis,

Johnnie Ray, Louis Prima, and Frank

Sinatra, who referred to Monte Proser
as the genius.
But while Montes name was on the
Copacabana lease, organized crime
boss Frank Costello had helped finance
the nightclub, and was a silent partner.
He knew full well what he was
in for, but he needed the capital,
explained Montes son Jim. He was in
debt, committed to the club, and had
no illusions about what partnership
Frank Costello would mean. Coming
out of the Great Depression, organized
crime was one of few places where one
could turn for money.
Costello hired former Kit Kat Club
manager Jules Podell to run the kitchen
and restaurant staff at the Copacabana,
and keep an eye on the business.
radiusmag.com

Podell quickly proved to be violent

and cruel, squeezing suppliers, abusing
staff, and feuding with Monte over
control of the club.
Podell even assaulted Johnnie Ray
once at the Copacabana, hospitalizing
the famed singer.
He hated the song Cry and Rays
voice, and the way the women would
scream for him, according to Jim
Proser. Podell grabbed Ray, and
locked him in a walk-in freezer for
six hours. Johnnie Ray came down
with pneumonia, and had to cancel
his tour.
Its easy to see how the refined,
intelligent British-born Monte would
clash with the truculent Podell, but
the two had more in common than
met the eye.

A CLOSER LOOK

Jane, Monte and Janes sister Evelyn

during the couples wedding reception
at the Logan Inn in 1945.

They were exactly matched as

protagonist and antagonist, observed
Jim Proser. Both were Jewish bar
brawlers, with the same build and look,
and both had volcanic tempers. Monte
would take a swing at anyone who
said something egregious, particularly
about his religion or wife.
Monte met his wife, Jane Ball, while
she was auditioning to be a Copacabana
Girl, and announced his intention to
marry her on the spot. She made him
wait three years.
A talented dancer and actress
with movie offers already in hand,
Ball couldnt have imagined the toll
her husbands rivalry with Podell
would take on their marriage, along

with Montes burgeoning alcohol

consumption and frequent visits
to a nearby horse track.
Monte and Jane were wed at
Justice of the Peace Don DeLaceys
barbershop on Coryell Street in New
Hope in 1945. The couple walked to
their wedding reception down the
street at the Logan Inn.
From there, the two honeymooned
at a home Monte had purchased on
Jericho Mountain not far from New
Hope, and went on to raise their five
sons in Bucks County.
Unfortunately, the movie studios
were pumping out amphetamines,
and my mother got hooked, later
self-medicating with barbiturates,
recalls Jim Proser.
Some of my earliest memories
are of my mom being drugged and
unresponsive, he continued. She
would get the pills from a pharmacist
in Yardley.
Meanwhile, Monte was muscled
out of the Copacabana, but given jobs
by Frank Costello promoting and
managing shows in Las Vegas during
the 1950s.
Jim recounts. Dad was away a lot,
and felt guilty that she was depressed.
And she knew there was nothing
he could do about it, so there was a
kind of despair they shared without
blaming each other.
Monte was asked to run his
last saloon at La Bonne Auberge
restaurant in New Hope in the late
1960s, and worked there until he
died from a heart attack in 1973.

Jane and sons (from left) Timmy, Jimmy, Chip, Mike and Billy in an advertisement
on the New Hope Canal promoting local New Hope merchants in 1956.

Meanwhile, his son Jim had

started writing for the Lambertville
Beacon, and in New Hope had been
a busboy and dishwasher at Mels,
the Hacienda, and Johnny Francis
Canal House.
Jane moved to West Bridge Street in
New Hope, and worked as a registered
nurse until she died in 2005.
Explained Jim, A book about Dean
Martin referred to Monte as a front
man for the mafia, and I wanted to set
the record straight. I wanted to tell my
fathers story, wherever it led.
And the moral of the story?
Be careful who you pick for friends
and hang around. I dont think that
Monte had a choice.

A musical stage version of Mr.

Copacabana is being developed at the
Key West Theater, and Proser hopes
to premier the play at Bucks County
Playhouse. A TV adaptation of Mr.
Copacabana is also in the works.
Mr. Copacabana is a spellbinding
tale of the nightclub era in American
society, and of fame and fortune in
New York City and New Hope.
Perhaps, at its core, Mr.
Copacabana is a romantic story
about Montes obsession with a fading
dream, and the love between he and
his wife that somehow prevailed
through it all. | r

FOOD & DINING

FOOD & DINING

NelliRaes Kitchen:
Locally sourced, widely loved
Everything from the kitchen is made from scratch,
and is prepared with locally sourced ingredients
from all over Bucks County.

NelliRaes Kitchen is a cozy vegetarian

caf located in Revere, Pennsylvania,
that has locals hooked, and enjoys
frequent visitors from Easton, Allentown,
Doylestown, and New Hope, P.A.,
along with Frenchtown, N.J, and other
nearby areas.
The reason theyre all heading to
this scenic, rural section of Upper
Bucks County is simple: NelliRaes
offers local, fresh vegetarian food
produced on-premise in the relaxing
ambience of an uncluttered country
dining room.
On the menu is creative array of
vegetarian and vegan dishes, freshbaked treats, juices and smoothies.
Cooking is our passion is the
slogan of owners Rachel and Kris, who
opened the restaurant in 2013. We
5 8 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / J A N F E B 2016

both have done the nine-to-five thing,

says Kris. But weve been in the food
industry since we were teenagers, and
its the thing we know how to do best.
Everything from the kitchen is
made from scratch, and is prepared
with locally sourced ingredients from
all over Bucks County. The only thing
we dont make here is the bread from
Crossroads Bakery in Doylestown,
adds Rachel.
Moving quietly about in the quaint,
soothing atmosphere are friendly and
attentive staff members. The menu
is relatively modest in size, featuring
rotating desserts and specials.
Among the smoothies are Mango
Madness, made with mango juice
and bananas, and Nutty Blue, with
blueberries, bananas, and almond milk.

FOOD & DINING

Popular fresh-pressed juices include the

Carrot, Apple and Ginger mixture, and
Green Lemonade, made from celery,
parsley, apple, lemon, and cucumber.
The combinations taste balanced, and
the portions are generous.
The main menu at NelliRaes
Kitchen is built around breakfast and
lunch, both of which are served until
late afternoon. The excellent coffee
comes from the renowned Small World
Roasters in Princeton, and Wi-Fi is
available. Prices are affordable, and
outdoor seating is available.
Of note are the Breakfast Burrito,
with eggs, habanero wrap, cheddar
cheese, black beans, brown rice, and
salsa, and the French Toast, made with
gluten-free challah bread and served
with real maple syrup.

Another favorite is the Frittata

of the Day, served on a bed of mixed
greens. Recently featured were the
Spinach, Onion and Cheddar and
Three Cheese frittatas.
The Falldorf Salad has also been well
received, with its mixed greens, apples
pears, walnuts, goat cheese, and roasted
pumpkin seed, topped with an orangecranberry balsamic dressing. The Sushi
Salad may be the most popular of the
bunch, and features brown rice, grated
zucchini, grated carrots, red peppers,
mixed greens, nori seaweed, sesame
seeds, avocado and ginger dressing,
with a side of soy sauce.
Standouts among the changing
selection of soups have included Creamy
Carrot-Coconut, Potato Leek, Pumpkin,
and Moroccan Vegetable Stew.

Quesadillas are another ever-changing

specialty at NelliRaes Kitchen, and
are served with salsa and sour cream.
A recent Quesadilla del Dia used
arugula, apples, and feta cheese.
The hands-down customer favorite
at NelliRaes is the Sweet Potato
Burger, presented as a patty on greens,
or on a French roll, and served with
a secret sauce, about which the owners
would reveal little except that its
vegan and gluten-free. And one for the
meat-eater in any group is the savory
Grilled Veggie Sausage, which could
fool the most devout carnivore.
The Roasted Vegetable Wrap
is another delectable choice, with
assorted seasonal vegetables and
smoked Gouda cheese. A gluten-free
wrap is also available. The GlutenFree Mexican Lasagna was another
well-liked special for those who
avoid gluten proteins, which have
low nutritional value, and can cause
health problems for some.
If one has room, the desserts are
not to be missed. This is where so
many vegetarians and vegans feel like
theyve gotten the short end of the
stick. But the Blondie Brownies with
Peanut Butter Frosting, Hughs Lemon
Cake, and the Raw Chocolate Pudding,
which is decadent despite containing
no added sugar or dairy, change that
equation, making delicious, healthy
desserts a viable option.
Maybe thats another reason why
folks seem to be coming from to
NelliRaes Kitchen from all over Upper
Bucks County and beyond.

We get so many different people

visiting, from men in business suits to
painters and musicians, said Kris of
the cafs customer base. There really
isnt one singular demographic, and
we love that.
It certainly has been an incredible
first three years for NelliRaes Cafe,
and a relatively short time to have
earned such an apparently devoted
following.
We absolutely love it heretheres
just something amazing and magical
about the natural beauty of the area,
observed Kris.
And what does the future hold for
the NelliRaes?
Were not locked in to any business
model or goal, but prefer to let the
business take shape organically,
agreed Kris and Rachel. We love
where things are headed.
With locally sourced, scrumptious
vegetarian and vegan dishes, and
a warm and welcoming atmosphere
and staff, NelliRaes Caf is certainly
a must-try for vegetarians and meateaters alike. Great food is great food,
no matter what one calls it.
NelliRaes Caf is open weekdays
except Tuesday from 7 a.m. until
4:30 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to
4:30 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | r
