Improving Personal and Companion Study

The study time allowed while you are a full-time missionary of the Savior is an
unparalleled opportunity to become a gospel scholar and effective instrument in the hands of the Lord
as you preach His gospel in Spain. Imagine1 full hour of personal and 1 full hour of companion study
which is protected, scheduled and expected. One full hour in each category to immerse yourselves in
the scriptures and truly feast upon the words of Christ, not just snack on them or nibble on them. Never
again in your life will you have that kind of time at your disposal for study. The grand secret is to
understand the power of that time, use it effectively and wisely, and be disciplined enough to get into
a routine from which you do not deviate. In D&C 11:21, the Lord is giving counsel to the new
missionaries of the new Church which has just been established and it is relevant even today, "Seek not
to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if ye
desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men."
According to Preach My Gospel, "To teach effectively, you need to obtain spiritual knowledge... The
study habits you develop as a missionary will bless you personally and help those you teach grow in
their faith of the Savior.
I believe there are some principles that we should all follow as we strive to significantly
improve our personal study:
1. Study in the same place at the same time each day. Find a place which is comfortable, has good
light, and is away from distractions.
2. Know in advance what you are going to study and be disciplined in following that plan.
3. Every study period should begin with a kneeling prayer, asking fervently for the Spirit of the Lord to be
with you and guide you in your studies. Preach My Gospel teaches us that, "Your gospel study is most
effective when you are taught by the Holy Ghost. Always begin your gospel study by praying for the
Holy Ghost to help you learn."
4. Focus first on the most important sources at our disposal as a missionary--The Book of Mormon and
Preach My Gospel. We should plan to read in both sources every single day. In addition, as a mission,
we are reading the New Testament. These ought to be our primary focus as missionaries. A certain per
cent of every study period should include reading from those sources. Then, it is wise to spend some
time focusing on a specific topic--perhaps related to a question that our investigators had. Any
remaining time can be spent in the Missionary Library.
5. Make sure that you have a way of marking, underlining, or scoring your scriptures or iPad so that you
can refer easily to them in lessons. Having a small notebook to list the significant scriptures found in a
given chapter is also helpful. Time spent memorizing the location of commonly used scriptures is time
well spent. Create a list of the 2-3 most common scriptures associated with a gospel concept and
have them readily at your disposal.

6. Learning the gospel is a revelatory experience so we need to pay attention to thoughts, impression,
reflections, ideas that come into our minds regarding our investigators as we read, ponder, reflect and
study. We then need to act on those impressions!
7. Avoid the temptation to drowse, nap, let your mind wander, start late or in any other way waste this
precious time given to you.
8. Use the scriptures and the passages you have studied regularly so that they become part of your
memory bank and can be referred to with ease.
It is my hope and prayer that through thorough gospel study, we will truly become gospel scholars and
thus teach the message of the Restoration clearly and simply. Regular, disciplined and inspired
personal study will prepare us to do so. I love reading the scriptures and understanding the doctrines of
the kingdom. I am eternally grateful for the words of life contained in the scriptures and continue to
study them and try to understand them even better. It is a lifelong process.
Con gratitud por las escrituras,

Presidente Merril T Dayton

Truthfullness vs. Deception

Truthfulness is earning future trust by accurately reporting past facts. In the scriptures we learn that
Christ is the light, life and TRUTH of the world (John 14:6). He is the perfect example of truthfulness. In
the D&C 18:21 we are admonished to speak the truth in soberness and in the D&C 50:17 it says, "those
sent forth to preach word of truth should preach by the spirit of truth." And our thirteenth Atricle of
Faith says, "We believe in being HONEST." In our church we are taught to be TRUTHFUL!
Most people think of Abraham Lincoln when they identify a person who was truthful. I remember
,from grade school, hearing the story of Abraham Lincoln walking several miles to return 6 cents that
he had overcharged a person by mistake when he was working as a shop clerk. He also purchased a
store with a partner and fell in to debt. He sold the store and then the new owner disappeared. The
creditors turned to Abraham Lincoln to pay off the debts. It took him 12 years to pay off the entire
debt. Because of his integrity he earned the trust of the American people and became the president
of the United States.

I remember many years ago my 6 year old daughter came in from playing outside and she had a
large bag of oranges. She had picked them off of our neighbors tree. When I inquired she said it was
fine because the tree limb was hanging over our fence in the back yard and it was on our property. I
walked with her over to the neighbor and had her tell the woman what she had done. The neighbor
graciously thanked her and told her she could keep the oranges. To this day, that daughter tells me
that any time she is tempted to tell a white lie or do something dishonest, she thinks of that story. Each
of us probably has a story where we learned the importance of being truthful.

We can apply truthfulness to missionary work

--By reporting accurately what we do in our planning books.
--By being obedient to the rules in the mission handbook.
--By not distorting the truth, hiding information, misleading or telling white lies.
--By not exaggerating... by sticking to the facts when we tell of experiences and stories.
--By acknowledging mistakes we make.
--By facing the facts--face the truth instead of living a lie.
--By speaking the truth, never gossiping and spreading rumors.
President Dayton and I are very grateful for each of you. Thank you for your goodness. We feel
grateful to be working with such hard working, obedient, truthful missionaries.
We will continue to pray for your happiness and success as you continue to bring the good people in
Spain to Christ.
Much love and admiration
Hermana Dayton

The Miracle of Baptism

Absolutely crazy week! We

have been so blessed here on
the islands! This Saturday we
had the opportunity to baptize
Magdalena, Silvio, AND
Steven. I felt so blessed that
Silvio chose me to baptize him.
It was such a sacred privilege. I
have loved seeing all three of
these people make decisions
to follow Christ and enter into is
fold. I have so much love for all
three of them I can't even
express it. I love my mission
president. We are so blessed
and I have learned so much.
Well, this morning when I
opened my email, I discovered
that my mom safely delivered
baby Sophy!

This week Noelia was

baptized. It was a wonderful
service and It was an honor to
help be a part of it. A couple
of weeks ago her mom Nely
was preparing to be baptized.
As we were there helping her
get prepared Noelia got the
desire to be baptized and this
last week she was finally
baptized. Here in ______ I think
that there are a lot of
prepared people.

This week was a lot, but I'm so

grateful for it. I'm growing out
of my comfort zone and
appreciating my companion
more as she tries to be
involved in the work despite
what's going on. Patrick's
baptism was my first, and I
know it'll always be close to my
heart. I know this is God's work,
and I'm so glad to be here
serving. Thank you for helping
us and the other missionaries so
much, it makes every bit of a
difference. Have a great
week!

President it has been another

amazing week her in______. A
miracle for me this week was
the lesson Elder ____ and I had
with an interigator Jose
Fernando on Saturday night.
We started talking to him
about about baptism and he
wants to but he had 2
problems. 1) he did not have
a testimony that the book of
Mormon was true. We then
read a chapter with him 3
Nephi 11 and after we read
Moronis promise at the end of
the Book of Mormon. I then
asked if he thought that he
could receive an answer right
here and now. He was unsure
and i assured him that he
could. We then asked if we
could do a pray circle and so I
prayed and then Elder _____
and then Jose prayed. The
spirit was super strong in the
room and after Jose prayed
we all just sat there and felt the
spirit for like 5 minutes. We then
asked how he felt and he said
he felt a peace but he was not
sure if that was his answer or
what. I then read him D&C 6:
23-24. He thought that scripture
was amazing and he knew he
had received an answer. Elder
____ and I then promised if he
did the same thing we did in
the lesson he could receive the
same answer as another
confirmation. The second
problem he has is with coffee.
The spirit prompted me to give
him a promise. The promise
was if he read 1 chapter from
the book of Mormon every
morning he will have no desire
to drink coffee.

It was amazing while I gave the

promise I could feel the spirit
testifying to him that this
promise was true. He was taken
away when i said it. Elder ____
then asked if he would like to
be baptized and he accepted.
It was one of the most amazing
lessons i have ever been in.

It was such a pleasure to be

interviewed by you! I just
needed it. I had never
imagined me and the
people who I have taught in
the kingdom of heaven.
That is something I loved and
my mind pictured and made
me cry. Thank you so much I
will think about more
frequently.
We are happy because we
had the two baptisms of
Loveth and Scott and they
are interested in going to
temple and be sealed one
day for eternity! I love my
companion, as I told you in
the interview he is an angel
and a huge example for
me! We are hoping to set a
baptismal goal with Maria
Antonia this week she is
super busy and it has been
very complicated to meet
with her but hopefully we will
see her tomorrow!

The Miracle of Baptism

This week president was full

of miracles! It was fantastic!
To start we have 4 fechas all
of which have over an 80%
possibility of being baptized!
I'm super stoked for it and
truly the lord is blessing us! We
are expecting to see lots of
baptisms to start the year!
The zone also is doing
fantastic we had an average
of 1.7 fechas which is the
highest the zones had in
almost a year as far as we
saw it! So we are really
excited about the things that
are happening!

One of those is that Carmen,

the mother of our two recent
converts just told us that she
now has two jobs. One in the
middle of the week and one
on the weekend, and she is
about to drop the one that is
on the weekends so she can
come to church regularly with
her daughters. That is super
awesome because she is a
menos activo that hasn't
been to church in 13 or 14
years until she went to the
baptisms of her daughters.
Its awesome to watch their
family grow and work to
make church a priority. That's
one reactivation for Sabadell.
What is even cooler for their
family, is that their cousin,
Yolanda, was present for the
whole process for one of the
girls in their family. With that
she has officially been to two
baptisms, has heard all of the
lessons, and has watched
several conference talks and
the Restoration movie! Right
at this moment Elder ____ and
Elder ____ have her on fecha
for the 30th of this month! The
whole family is hopping in the
water one by one.
