We are so excited that IST will be hosting next years AISA-Global Issues Service Summit. It
will be an inspiring event that will empower students to become agents of change in our world,
particularly in relation to the 20 global issues highlighted in Jean Francois Rischards powerful
book High Noon: 20 Global Problems and 20 Years to Solve Them.
As you know, the focus of this conference is service. One of our tasks is to prepare and execute a
service program for the students to participate in on day 3 of the conference. Student delegates
from schools across Africa will spend the day on one of 12 service sites in order to gain a rich
service learning experience. Your service project could be one of these sites!
We would be thrilled if you would consider participating in one of these committees. We believe
you have the skills and expertise that will make the planning of this summit a grand success, and
we would love to have you as part of the GISS team for 2016.
-
What type of work will delegates at your service site be involved in?
- Delegates will be split into groups, each working with a Member of the Marine Parks to
devise strategies for further protection of the island and to understand the way in which the
TMPA works
- Delegates will also get a chance to tour the island and go snorkeling to identify different
species that inhabit the island and its surroundings. This will allow for them not only to have a
good time, but also understand the benefits of protecting this island and thus encouraging
them to discuss and derive stronger protection strategies.
- Delegates will also, be taught by representatives from the marine parks protection strategies
that they are able to implement in other coastal regions.
- Delegates may even get a chance to talk to some of the fishermen about their jobs and why
they do what they do. (this depends on if we can get fishermen to open up about their jobs)
- Depending on how things work out as I am working on the project I may add or remove
certain activities in order to make the experience for the delegates not only fun but also
educational and inspiring.
How do you think your project will contribute to the Service Learning Day?
