collaborationwiththeUniversityofAlbertaforthepast20years.MiddleYearsgraduateshaveauniqueknowledge
andskillsetthattheyacquireovertwoyearswithinacohortof40students.

Curriculumknowledge
StudentshavecurriculumcoursesinMath,Science,LanguageArts,SocialStudies,Phys.
Ed.andArtanddevelopunitandlessonplansineachofthesesubjectareasforGrades4through9.
Curriculumintegration
Throughouttheprogram,Middleyearsgraduatesexplorecurriculumintegrationasameans
tomakelearningengaging,authenticandmeaningfulforkids.Instructorsalsocollaboratetohelpstudentsmake
connectionsbetweensubjectsareas.Whenplanningunits,studentsuseanunderstandingbydesignframework
incorporatingelementsofprojectbasedlearningandcrosscurricularcompetencies.
Developmentallyresponsive
Designinginstructionthatisdevelopmentallyresponsiveandaddressesthephysical,
psychosocialandcognitiveneedsoftheyoungadolescent(ages10to15)isexploredthroughouttheprogram.
LearnersareattheheartofpedagogicaldecisionsandtheMiddleYearsgraduatesarewellpreparedtoassessand
addresstheindividualstudentneedsandinterests.
Authenticlearning
ThroughoutthetwoyearsoftheMiddleYearsprogram,ourstudentsareworkingwithstudents
inlocalclassrooms.Ourgraduatesbenefitfrom14weeksofpracticumandmanychoosetodoanextendedpracticum
intheir4thyear,providingthemwithyearlongexperienceinschools.Throughservicelearningprojects,amathand
scienceconference,collaborativereadingandwritingprojectsofferedincollaborationwithlocalschools,ourstudents
arecontinuallyhoningtheirteachingskills.Manyopportunitiesforpeerteachingandfeedbackarealsoprovidedwithin
thecontextofourcourses.

Ourstudentsquicklydiscoverthevalueofteamwork!Workingwithacohortof40students,Middle
Yearsgraduatesacquireleadership,communicationandconflictresolutionskillswhiletheyalsobenefitfromthe
