Special Teams Play: Fake Field Goal Defense

by Bill Ramseyer Former Head Coach Virginia-Wise Highland Cavaliers
This defense is called when the position of the ball and game circumstances make it unlikely that the kicking team
will truly kick. The defense plays the fake all the way without rushing.
The ends are in 4 alignment, playing 5 technique. When the ball is in the center of the field, the tackles are in 2
alignment, playing 2-gap responsibility. If the ball is within 6 yards of the hash, the tackle to the sideline slides to a 0
technique.
The Sam linebacker and the strong safety align over the tight ends. They jam the tight ends hard and play them
man-to-man.

The Mike and Will linebackers are in 3 alignment. If the ball is within 6 yards of the hash, they slide toward the wide
side. They play man-to-man against the men in the backfield without the ball (the holder or the kicker).
The left and right corners align over the wings, playing them man-to-man. The free safety plays free, favoring the
wide side of the field.

This play is excerpted from Winning Football by Bill Ramseyer. The book is available through Human Kinetics at
