Exterior and
Green Coatings

This month two of our feature articles focus on the issues of sustainability and green coatings.

Exterior Architectural Coatings

Exterior Architectural Coatings Market (p. 28) examines the impact
LEED and the green building movement have had on this market. Over
the last two decades, paint and coatings manufacturers have increased
research and development efforts to develop low- and zero- VOC technology for paints, stains, caulks and sealants. Delivering premium quality
that rivals their higher VOC counterparts, reduced VOC paint products
offer many benefits for professionals and consumers alike.
All of PPGs products are researched and tested to meet the highest
quality standards, said Mary Ellen Shivetts, senior product stewardship
manager, PPG Architectural Coatings, U.S. and Canada. PPG was one
of the first pioneers in the paint industry in developing new performance
standards for zero and low-VOC products.
The use of water based coatings for wood architectural products
and powder coatings for metal architectural products will continue to
grow, predicted Dean Peterson, business development manager, metal
building products, The Sherwin-Williams Company. Liquid coatings are
now offered with higher solids, lower VOCs and sustainable raw materials. The companys SHER-NAR 5000 Architectural Baking Enamel
holds the sole U.S. spray license for Arkemas Kynar 500 FSF PVDF resin.
This fluorosurfactant-free license means that 100 percent Kynar 500 FSF
PVDF resin is used, which allows architects to meet the stringent AAMA
2605-13 specifications and provide long-lasting performance in a variety
of weather conditions.

Green Coatings
Our feature on green coatings, PPG Coatings Featured on The Tower at
PNC Plaza (p. 31) offers a glimpse at the products used on what has been
dubbed, the worlds greenest building. The 33-story skyscraper features an
innovative double-skin faade, one of the first of its kind in North America,
that is designed to help the building naturally ventilate for more than 40
percent of the year. The inner and outer curtain walls incorporate metal
panels finished with PPGs Coraflon fluoropolymer powder coating in Gray
Mica and Sungate and STARPHIRE glasses laminated or fabricated into
dual insulating glass units.

as Color of the Year 2016

kzoNobels influential annual

global study of color trends has
been launched, with a shade of
gold being unveiled as Color of the Year
for 2016.
An appropriate color for an Olympic
year, it was chosen by a specially invited
panel of independent design and color
experts to spearhead the companys
ColorFutures 2016 color trend guide.
Recently launched at Somerset House
in London, Color Futures underlines
AkzoNobels wealth of color know-how
and is used by leading experts in architecture, fashion, beauty and interior decorating to help keep their work fresh and

Color is an integral part of our business and sharing our knowledge with

people around the world means everyone

can be inspired and benefit from its transformative impact, said Ruud Joosten,
AkzoNobels

and design trends. The study drew from a
multitude of influences, from fine art to

Sherwin-Williams Offers
Thermal Insulative Coating

herwin-Williams
Protective
&
Marine Coatings now offers a products for industrial businesses looking
to enhance worker safety and minimize
corrosion under insulation (CUI) risks.
Heat-Flex 3500 is a multipurpose
insulative acrylic coating for industrial
systems thats designed for both personnel protection and mitigating CUI. The
coating enables dangerously hot systems
like piping and ductwork to stay cool to
the touch, preventing burns and protecting the safety of personnel. It can be applied directly to ambient or hot surfaces
up to 350 F (177 C), offering plants the
flexibility to reduce downtime by keeping
systems online during coating and recoating applications. In addition, Heat-Flex
3500 also insulates hot and cold surfaces,
helping industrial processes retain heat
and preventing condensation on cold
surfaces by maintaining surface temperatures above the dew point.
The insulative and anti-corrosive
properties of Heat-Flex 3500 enable
plant owners to eliminate concerns related to CUI. The protective coating system
prevents corrosion-causing condensation
on the exterior of piping, ductwork, and
other surfaces wrapped in conventional
insulation and cladding. It performs so
well at mitigating corrosion that structures coated with Heat-Flex 3500 can be
removed from CUI inspection protocols.
Available in white and slate gray, HeatFlex 3500 is ideal for coating everything
from pipes, valves, tanks, vessels, heaters,
and boilers to compressors, pumps, containers, stacks, and ductwork that operate in temperature ranges between -80 F
and +350 F.
Heat-Flex 3500 goes on fast and easy
to save application time and costs. Its
single-component, waterborne acrylic
formulation can be applied with standard
airless equipment. Its very fast dry time
allows for recoating within two hours.
In addition, Heat-Flex 3500 minimizes
overspray risks with droplets drying to a

non-adhering dust within a 20-foot fall.

Heat-Flex 3500 is suited for a wide
range of environments, including oil and
gas refineries, chemical, power, water,

Business Corner Strategies & Analysis

Q&A with ColorBond and Reactive Surfaces

by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

n the world of coatings and paints,

there are many nooks and crannies
where really neat things are going on,
but we dont routinely hear much about
them. Heres a couple of companies serving niche needs and doing quite well.
ColorBond and Reactive Surfaces (RSL).
ColorBond is a revolutionary molecular bonding paint that penetrates deep
into plastic, vinyl and leather. It provides
easy restoration and can change the color
of leather, carpet, plastics or metal in automobiles, trucks, cars, boats, or motorcycles with fantastic results. -Malcom
Johnson, President & Founder
CW: When did you form ColorBond &
why did you feel you could have a viable
product in these markets?
ColorBond: ColorBond was established
in 1996 because I felt that the available
coatings for refinishing automotive leather and plastics were inferior and could be
dramatically improved. At that time, the
idea of a premium coating for leather and
plastic was not being addressed, and we
felt that there was a great market opportunity for our company.
We were fortunate to be approached
by Visteon, at that time owned by the
Ford Motor Company, to partner with
them in developing the technology. We
worked with Ford Research Labs and
Visteon for seven years and this collaboration culminated in ColorBond earning
two Ford World Wide OEM performance specifiations.
CW: According to Michael Porter
(Harvard Professor of), a NICHE position
in a specific well-defined market segment
has the highest profits in that segment as
well as a UNIQUE offering. UNIQUE is
defined as having something no one else
possesses. Would you say your offerings

are unique by this definition? Why?

ColorBond: ColorBond is unique because
it is a one stage coating that can be used
on any substrate that is manufactured
for the automotive industry including,
leather, vinyl, ABS, PC, TPU and TPO
and metal. It doesnt crack flake or peel,
is colorfast , dries within one minute and
is bonded in ten minutes. Colorbonds
versatility allows the user to stop in the
middle of a job and resume the project at
a later date. There will be no evidence of
a tape line, only a seamless OEM finish.
It creates an OEM appearance.
ColorBond can be used on carpet, soft
interior trim, rigid interior trim, exterior
trim and convertible tops. We currently
manufacture and inventory 172 contemporary OEM specific aerosol colors.
CW: Can you provide some insight into why
or how your Colorbond technology works
with so many different type substrates?
Colorbond: The key is our unique resin.
It is ideally suited for use on all of these
substrates.
CW: Your literature shows ColorBond
spray-on products applied over rigid,
supple, and even very soft pliable surfaces. Tell me - what is the longevity of your
coating system over a leather automobile
seat where flexibility, abrasion and overall toughness prevail?
Colorbond: ColorBonds longevity dependent upon the preparation of the
surface and the skill of the individual applying it. When the easy to use directions
are followed accurately, ColorBond will
maintain its flexibilty and abrasion resistance for a minimum of four years.
Both Ford performance specifications
require that ColorBond perform for the duration of a typical four year warranty. This
includes UV stability, flex, and abrasion.
CW: Are the coating formulas you market exclusive to your use or do you also
allow other coating companies to market

your unique products?

ColorBond: The formulas are proprietary
however we do manufacture private label
colors for many customers
CW: How do you go-to-market currently? Direct, Stocking Distributors, etc.?
Colorbond: We are nimble and have
the capabilities to distribute to a wide
spectrum of customers. The list includes
stocking distributors, mobile technicans,
retailers, catalogue houses, aftermarket
parts distributors, private labels and more.
We are very pleased with the performance of our web site www.colorbondpaint.com Two years ago we invested
heavily in the redesign of our web site. The
platform fully engages in social media and
SEO. We speak directly to the consumer
on a daily basis. This allows us to never
lose the connection with the most important person, The Customer.
CW: Are your target end-use markets growing and equally important, is
Colorbond keeping pace?
ColorBond: Our target end use markets
expand every year and we continue to
grow every year. New markets continue
to develop that we had never imagined
such as painting 3-D substrates.
CW: As an private individual, how can
I order these coatings from Colorbond?
Direct? Distributor?
ColorBond: An individual can order on
line at www.colorbondpaint.com or contact us at 877 882 6567.
CW: Can you tell us about the Cleo
Award that you established in 2014 ?
ColorBond: The Cleo Award was established to honor a legend in the automotive world, Mr Leo Kagan. Leo is 99 years
old and was responsible for moving the
SEMA show from Anaheim to its present location in Las Vegas. He has been a
member of SEMA for 50 years.

Austin, Texas based Reactive Surfaces
is a bioengineering company that develops enzyme-based additives for paint
to detoxify neurotoxins, including nerve
agents and pesticides.
CW: When did you form Reactive
Surfaces & why did you feel you could
have a viable product in these markets?
Reactive Surfaces: We started Reactive
Surfaces with the concept that it might be
possible to extract valuable functionality
from nature and entrain it into coatings
in a long-term stable manner.
The attack on the World Trade center
brought our self-decontaminating coatings
into the spotlight in 2001. We started the
company in earnest in 2002. By 2008,
we had developed the technology well
enough to be awarded the 2008 American
Coatings Award for innovative technology.
After over ten years, we can say that its
not only possible to place biological molecules into resin systems but that it can be
accomplished for a wide array of natural
functions from enzymes generating selfdegreasing surfaces capable of removing human fingerprints from touch screen devices
and countertops, to non-toxic peptides that
create anti-microbial surfaces for medical
devices and kitchen appliances. The formulator can now dependably dial in natural
functionality to its existing coating products.
CW: According to Michael Porter, a
NICHE position in a specific well-defined
market segment has the highest profits
in that segment as well as a UNIQUE
offering. UNIQUE is defined as having
something no one else possesses. Would
you say your offerings are unique by this
definition? Why?
RSL: We believe RSL is the first and
only company commercializing bio-based
molecules as functional additives for coatings. But, the competition is not far behind
since the industry is realizing just how
valuable such functionality can be, and

how biological molecules such as enzymes,

peptides, antibodies, and the like exist in
Nature ready-made for such work. We are
the only group that presently offers these
bio-based additives, as well as functionalized coatings containing them. With the
launch of our e-RACE line of anti-fingerprinting touch screen protectors, we can
also say we are unique in offering a finished
consumer product coated with a functional
coating entraining a bio-based molecule
(the naturally-occurring enzyme, lipase).
CW: Can you provide some insight into why
or how your bio-based additive technology
works with so many different types of resin
systems and on a variety of substrates?
RSL: The trick seems to be that in their
natural condition, many of these molecules are actually entrained into biological surfaces. Take for instance our
anti-microbial peptide products like
ProteCoat. Almost all higher organisms use anti-microbial peptides as a part
of their natural defense systems against
surface contamination. These peptides
are present on the surfaces of the organisms most at-risk of infection. Enzymes
like to packaged and constrained from
unfolding, so the cross-linked cages created by polymerization of a wide number
of resin systems do a nice job of that.
CW: Most people in the industry regard
biological molecules as too unstable and
short-lived to be useful as additives in
coatings. What is the longevity of your
additives in a coating and how rugged are
they to weathering?
RSL: I understand the sentiment, and I
initially felt the same way. But, now with
tons of testing and years of experience, we
now have a rule of thumb around here if
the coating lasts, the functionality will last.
For example, we have entrained enzymatic
degreasing functionality (DeGreez) in
coatings, coated panels with them, and then
subjected those coatings to MEK doublerubs down to the bare metal. Not only did
the enzymatic activity remain all the way
until the coating is finally scrubbed off, it
actually increased as more of the surface
was exposed to the grease challenges it
was designed to combat. Additionally, we
entrained enzymes capable of detoxifying

November 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

nerve gases (OPDtox) into military

coatings and placed panels coated atop
black rotor blades of military helicopters.
These coupons were left in the desert sun
for months, and they demonstrated virtually the same enzymatic activity they had
the day they were made. This is also true
our peptide biocides (ProteCoat), being
subjected to long-term (4+ years) outdoor
weathering at USM. The panels coated
with the peptide-containing outdoor
white paints remain virtually microbe-free
throughout the testing period as opposed to
heavy contamination of control coatings.
CW: Are the bio-based additives, coatings and coated products you market exclusive to your use or do you also allow
other coating companies to market your
unique products?
RSL: We have a manufacturing facility in
Hattiesburg, MS where our labs are also
located. We build the additives, formulate
the coatings and manufacture the sheet
materials for touch screens there. Our
marketing capability is somewhat limited.
We are the epitome of the Little Engine
That Could mentality. However, it has always been the overriding goal to partner
commercialization of the technology we
have developed with others in order to access the larger commercial markets.
CW: How do you go-to-market currently? Direct, Stocking Distributors, etc.?
Colorbond: We directly market our biobased functional coatings applied to adhesive sheet materials, such as are designed
for anti-fingerprinting touch screen protectors (e-RACE), through mass-marketing
channels (internet, TV, printed catalogs,
etc.). We use fulfillment services for some of
this. We also spend a considerable amount
of manpower publishing articles in industry
publications. www.reactivesurfaces.com.
Using these approaches, we have been able
to garner the attention of larger corporate
partners who are interested in incorporating our additives or bio-based coatings containing these into their own product lines,
and we are presently moving toward commercialization with several of them.
CW: We will revisit you and RSL again in
the near future and look forward to much
anticipated progress. CW

he strong growth recovery of Brazils

Embraer, one of the top five small jet
makers in the world, should raise demand for aviation paint and coatings, in contrast
to other segments with slow or no growth in
the economically challenged country. Embraer
sales, which are very global in distribution, rose
to $402 million during third quarter this year
from $213 million in the comparable period
last year. The Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo
state company also has a growing pipeline of
orders. This year, Embraer predicts $1.85 billion worth of global sales of 90 light jets and
40 medium jets, representing 28 percent of the
companys total revenue. Embraer has sold a
cumulative 850 small jets in the world, 200 of
which are within Latin America.
Within Brazil, the national small jet fleet
grew by 3.6 percent last year, Embraer calculates. Company expectations are that over the
current decade, Brazil will add 560 small business jets valued at $9.4 billion.
Embraer Executive Jets, which has a manufacturing plant in Melbourne, Florida, recently
celebrated the sale of its 300th Phenom 300.
The light jet has been the most-delivered business jet in the world for the past two years, the
company claims.
Further bolstering aviation expansion in
Brazil, the Air Force in April agreed to buy 36
Gripen NG aircraft for $4.6 billion including a
turnkey weapon system with comprehensive logistic support that includes training, spare parts,
support, planning and maintenance, a statement indicates. In addition, Brazil will partner
with Saab in Sweden for the development and
production or eight two-seater aircraft, that will
be delivered between 2019 and 2024.
In mid-2015, Embraer employees will be
trained in Sweden on maintenance and development of the Gripen NG. This training technology will then be transferred to Brazil through
the development of an Engineering Center to
be built at Embraers plant in Gavio Peixoto,

18 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

state of So Paulo, including Saab support of

the Gripen aircraft for the Air Force.
Apart from Embraer activity in aviation,
AgustaWestland do Brasil is planning to build a
new plant at Itapevi, state of Sao Paulo, that would
include a helicopter final assembly line; construction of the new facility is scheduled to be completed
in 2016. The project is being supported by Investe
So Paulo, the state investment promotion agency
within the Secretariat of Economic Development,
Science, Technology and Innovation.
Drone development in Brazil could also spur
coatings demand. An Embraer joint venture
with Israeli manufacturer Elbit resulted in the
latters opening of subsidiary AEL Sistemas in
Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul. The
state cancelled a contract for drones from the
company in December 2014, purportedly for
political pressure. Drone use in Brazil still could
be spurred by a new government regulation
over the use of the products, now limited to
state security, which was used during the World
Cup in soccer and is expected to be in use for
the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Within the global thermal spray coating
market, estimated to reach $12.3 billion by
2022, corrosion resistant coatings in aerospace will help spearhead demand, according
to Grand View Research. Aerospace is now the
largest segment for thermal spray, valued at
$2.6 billion last year, and increasing global government spending in civil aviation will propel
the thermal spray coating market over the next
seven years, the analysts opine.
Among major suppliers of aviation coatings
are AkzoNobel, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, BASF
and Henkel, which are also active in the architectural, automotive and other industrial segments of the Brazilian market. CW

he short to medium outlook for wood

coatings in Europe is looking bright
at the moment as a result of a revival
in the construction industry in the European
Union and increased sales of wood products in
segments in which previously the material has
been little used.
In the longer term the biggest driver in the
sector is the widespread belief that wood offers
more opportunities than other materials for
combating climate change.
However, the expansion of the European
wood market presents challenges to producers
of wood coatings and related treatments like
stains and oils, which goes beyond product
innovation. The coatings industry has to be

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

able to demonstrate that the sustainability of its

products matches that of wood itself.
Currently growth in demand for timber has
not been uniform across Europe or even within
individual European countries. But analysts
reckon it has been averaging a rate well above
GDP growth in Western Europe of around 1-2
percent, which is about the level of expansion
of the whole of the regions coatings market.
Hardwood output went up by 8 percent last
year but many hardwood sectors were still at
production levels below those before the 2008
recession, according to the European Timber
Trade Federation (ETTF).
Timber sales in Germany went up 4 percent in 2014, considerably above the countrys
GDP rise, reports GD Holz, the German timber trade association.
But this increase was offset by a 7-percent
drop in sales in the first four months of this
year with building product sales going down

medium outlook for
wood coatings in
Europe is looking

by 7 percent.
There has been a steep increase in
demand for some engineered woods in
northern European countries, which have
helped to widen the architectural potential of wood.
In Stockholm a joint venture of a contractor and house developer is planning to build
6,000 dwellings using engineered woods, including a 13-storey apartment block.
B&K Structures, a specialist in hybrid
materials structures, has been building
at Banyan Wharf, London, a 10-story
residential construction with a mix of
frames of steel and engineered wood. A
14-storey building of engineered wood in
Bergen, Norway, is due to be completed this year, while in Vienna a 24-story
tower of concrete and wood is also being
constructed for commercial use.
A major consequence of the greater
use of wood in a wider variety of building, both on their exteriors and in their
interiors, as well as in niches in the automobile, household appliance and signage
sectors is that wood coatings manufactures have to operate more on a bespoke
basis with architects and designers wanting customised products.
The outcome is a much more fragmented market. Of the 600,000 architects in
Europe, a growing number are becoming
aware of the benefits of wood components and then are wanting to specify the
paints and dyes to be used on them.
In the EU joinery and furniture industries alone, there are around 300,000
manufacturers, the vast majority of them
small-scale.
This fragmentation is helping SMEs
specializing in wood coatings, particularly those mainly serving local or

regional markets.
The bigger players have to rely on
networks of distributors. Also, to keep
up with the rising demand for customized products and constant innovation,
they require versatile R&D departments.
Italys IVM Group, based in Milan,
which, through its Milesi unit, is one of
Europes leading suppliers of wood coatings for professionals, spends 8 percent
of its revenue on R&D.
A possible consolation for wood
coatings manufacturers is that the surge
in sales of the new, engineered woods,
whose strands and fibers are restructured to form composite high-strength
materials, looks unlikely to necessitate
the development of complex new coatings formulations.
At present the ones proving to be
popular with architects and designers in
Europe are cross-linked timber (CLT),
glulam and thermally and chemically
modified woods.
CLT comprises layers of boards placed
cross-wise to adjacent layers, while glued
laminated timber or glulam consists of
several layers of timber of different dimensions stuck together with adhesives
to make vertical or horizontal columns as
strong as steel.
The big bonus for coatings manufacturers is that these woods are chemically
and physically more stable than conventional woods, explained a UK-based
timber consultant. The existing coatings
actually perform better on them and can
be applied with heavier loadings.
On the other hand coatings on engineered woods have a disadvantage in
respect to the contribution they make
to the sustainability of the woods. CLT,
glulam and others have a long service
life in buildings so that far lower energy
inputs are required than with other materials while they act as a means of storing carbon. But this gain comes far more
from the engineering of the wood itself
than the coating itself.
With conventional woods, coatings
have a much bigger role in extending the
service life of the woods, a quality which
would be reflected in the life cycle assessments (LCAs) of the coatings.
We have an LCA database with data

November 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

on the chemicals in coatings going back

20 years, which show how they improve
the environmental impact
of wood
products by altering their life cycles,
explained Sandy Smith, a consultant at
thinkstep, LCA specialists, LeinfeldenEchterdingen, Germany.
With a rising number of wood purchasers wanting to know the LCAs of what
they buy, including those of the coatings,
it is becoming important to know as accurately as possible how much coatings
exactly prolong service lives of woods.
With coatings on exterior wood
components on buildings, like window
frames, there can be significant differences in estimates of service life of coatings because of the lack of consistency
in the data from short-term laboratory
tests, including accelerated weathering,
and that from natural or field weathering exposures.
Servowood, a research project coordinated by the European Coatings
Federation (CEPE) and funded by the EU,
aims to fill the data gaps between the two
systems of weathering tests.
Started last year and due to be completed in 2017, it aims to establish
European Standards for facilitating the
prediction of the service life for exterior
wood coatings across different climatic
zones. Much of the research will be focused on measuring the inputs in dosage
based on factors like temperature, UV
light and moisture and the response of
different coatings systems to them.
We will establish parameters for creating models for extrapolating the causal
links between the inputs dosages and
the performance of the coatings in both
laboratory and field-based exposures,
explained Jan van der Meulen, CEPEs
director general.
CEPE is hoping that the firmer data
on the service life of exterior wood coatings will help coatings companies develop
even more efficient products, while highlighting how much coatings underpin the
unique sustainability of wood, particularly in buildings.
The research will help wood products to be even more effective in the
fight against climate change, van der
Meulen said.CW

wo of Africas hydrocarbon industry giants, Nigeria and Angola, are

poised to dominate the continents
offshore oil and gas paints and coatings
market in the short- and medium-term on
the back of ambitious projects already underway or in the pipeline.
Market analysts Frost & Sullivan predicts
in a new report the two countries, which
have a combined 46 billion barrels of proved
crude oil reserves, present attractive growth
and operational expansion opportunities for
manufacturers in the offshore oil and gas
(O&G) paints and coatings market.
With raw material availability and local
manufacturing capabilities catalyzing production and supply lines, the two countries
are rapidly emerging as the African hub for
the offshore oil and gas paints and coatings
market, the report said.
Currently, Nigeria and Angola have lined
up a total of 19 offshore oil and gas projects
over the next five years and these are expected
to substantially grow the two countries offshore oil and gas paints and coatings market.
Angola, which holds 9 billion barrels of
proved crude oil reserves, most of it located in
offshore areas of Lower Congo and Kwanza
basin, has up to 10 major offshore projects
set for implementation in a bid to increase its
crude production capacity. The projects include Mafumeira Sul, Luanzi field, Kizomba
Satellites Phase 2, East Hub Project (Cabaca
Norte, South-East), Greater Plutonio Phase 3,
Kaombo Project, Negage, Lucapa, Chissonga,
Malange and Cameia.
The projects are being developed by major international oil companies (IOCs) of
Chevron, ExxonMobil, Total, BP, Maersk
Oil, Eni SpA and Cobalt either separately or
jointly.
Earlier,
US
Energy
Information
Administration (EIA) said: Because several
of Angolas older deepwater fields are past

22 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

their peak production, the new capacity additions from upcoming projects are more
likely to sustain Angolas crude oil production around or slightly above current levels
over the medium term rather than provide a
substantial boost.
Six of the Angolan projects have reached
final investment decision (FID) phase with
EIA saying: Despite the recent drop in global
oil prices, projects that are past FID stage will
most likely not be cancelled because the procurement phase has already started.
In Nigeria, a country with 37 billion barrels of proved crude oil reserves, second only
to Libya, IOCs have unveiled nine offshore
oil and gas projects to be implemented over
the next five years and which are likely to
boost growth of the West African countrys
offshore oil and gas market.
Although the countrys controversial
Petroleum Industry Bill has held back several
of the planned projects, with only two having
been sanctioned by IOCs, the West African
economy presents one of the largest growth
opportunities for the offshore oil and gas
paints and coatings market.
The projects have a combined capacity of
1.1 million new productions in five years according to EIA.
In the new Frost & Sullivan report both
countries generated revenues of $675.1 million in 2014 earnings set to rise to $1,131.4
million in 2019 based on the study of the
offshore oil and gas facilities, dry docks and
fabrication yards.
The subsidization of manufacturing
makes Nigeria and Angola vital to the production of offshore oil and gas paints and coatings in Africa, with the goal of African needs
being fulfilled by African countries, said
Frost & Sullivan Chemicals and Materials research analyst Abdul-Baasit Abdullah.
The drop in crude oil prices has reduced
the base costs of paint through a reduction
in raw material cost of 8.3 percent, driving
competitive pricing and consumption.
Construction of local production facilities will be vital in order to ensure cost-competitiveness, as transportation costs of raw

materials are steep, the report stated.
In Angola several contracts have
been awarded for the development of
offshore facilities by the international
oil companies exploring or producing crude oil and gas in the countrys
offshore blocks. In addition, a number
of dry docks and fabrication yards are
anticipated as more and more crude oil
projects come online.
For example, a number of floating,
production, storage and offloading
(FPSO) vessels have been delivered or
are under construction to meet the increasing demand. Italys Eni SpA has
awarded a $2.9 billion contract to
Malaysias offshore oilfield services firm
Bumi Armada Berhad for the charter,
operation and maintenance of a FPSO
to be deployed at Block 15/06. The vessel will be delivered by 2016.
Bumi has in turn awarded Swissbased power-grid maker ABB a contract
for the supply electrification and automation systems for the FPSO which is
set to churn out 80,000 barrels/day by
the end of 2016.
The vessel will control the entire
extraction process, storing of oil and
gas until they can be offloaded to shuttle
tankers, the company said previously.
Separately, Sweden-based Alfa Laval
has also been awarded a $30.7 million
contract to supply Framo pumping systems for Enis two FPSOs in Angola
with a deadline to deliver for 2015 and
2016. The order comprises offshore
pumping systems for two FPSOs to be
moored outside the Angola coast, the
company added.
Both Nigeria and Angola offshore
oil and gas exploration and production activities are likely to continue
drawing more drill ships, FPSOs, FPSO
topside modifications, flow lines and
subsea equipment as the countries
bring more offshore oil and gas fields
into operation.
Nigeria and Angola offshore oil and
gas paints and coatings market compound annual growth is projected to
hit 9.6 percent and 12.3 percent respectively until 2019.
Frost & Sullivan said Nigeria local
paints and coatings manufacturers are

supplying 30 percent to 46 percent of

the countrys demand while the rest is
supplied through imports.
In Angola, the market analyst said
6 percent of the offshore oil and gas
paints and coatings are manufactured
locally but a large share of the demand
is met by imports.
The distribution of local brands
supported by sales of international
brands will ensure long-term growth in
the Nigerian and Angolan markets.
Frost and Sullivan estimates Nigerias
total offshore oil and gas paints and
coatings market at 24 million liters,
with potential to grow to 37.9 million
liters by 2019.
Development and construction
operations in ports such as Lagos and
Luanda present significant growth opportunities, the report said, adding
significant technological investments
have been made in the manufacturing of
offshore paints and coatings since 2013.
However, the analyst said price fluctuations and customer price sensitivity

November 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

are major factors impeding growth in

the market, both of which have led to
underdevelopment in certain areas and
significant growth in others.
While in-country manufacturing
is a must-have, building a brand reputation will be essential for long-term,
sustainable growth, said Abdullah.
Partnerships between local and international companies will speed up the
development of high-quality products
and assist offshore oil and gas paints
and coatings manufacturers in meeting
demand in the Nigerian and Angolan
markets.
Key market players in Nigeria include Berger Paints, Portland Paints
and Products, CAP PLC, DN Meyer
PLC and International Paints while
the Angolan market is dominated by
Hempel, AzkoNobel, Dekro, Sigma
Coatings and International Paint.
The oil and gas boom in Africa is
set to be one of the major drivers of
the continents coatings market going
forward. CW

IPaint Protecting the P&C Industrys Intellectual Assets

Tying and Bundling - Nice For Your Holiday Giving,

Not so Much When Youre Licensing Your IP
by Steve McDaniel, JD, PhD
Technology Litigators

ouve developed a cool new additive for a broad spectrum of

coatings even those coatings
outside your own wheelhouse coatings. Happens a lot, right? In order to
maximize the return on your R&D investment bringing the additive to market, you begin licensing to others. You
start negotiating a license to your intellectual property surrounding the use of
this novel coating component. You have
a patent covering some aspects, you have
a trademark that delivers goodwill you
have developed in the product, and you
even have some copyrighted software
that can be used to predict formulating
mixtures. Integrating all of this disparate collection of intellectual property is
a lot of know-how, show-how and generalized trade secret information.
Youd like to extract maximal value
out of the hard-won trade secret portfolio, so you suggest to the other party that
you manufacture the coating component,
and that they agree to buy it from you as
a sole source (since youre the only one
that has access to the trade secret treasure
chest). You might think licensing your
trade secrets would be just like licensing
your other intellectual property (e.g., patents, trademarks, copyrights, etc.). But,
there are some potholes along the road
that may prevent you from hauling your
licensing royalties to the bank.
Linking IP with products or with
other types of intellectual property is
done all the time. You may be offering
licenses that cover multiple patents or
copyrighted materials or you may connect (tie) the sale of two distinct patented goods. Or you might license or
good covered only by trade secret with
another patented good.
A classic contractual patent tying
occurs when the tying product (e.g., a

vapor deposition machine for coating

electrical devices) is patented, but the
tied product is not patented. Rather,
it is a raw material used as an input
for the tying product (specialized coatings that are
vapor deposited), and the
sale of the patented product (machine) is conditioned on the purchase of
the unpatented product
(coating). A technological tie on the other hand
is one where the tying and
the tied product get bundled together physically or
they are co-produced so
that are only useable with
each one another. The infamous U.S. government
suit against Microsoft involved both the contractual and technological
bundling of the Internet
Explorer web browser (in
this case, the tied product)
with MicroSofts Windows
operating system (the tying product).
Multiple
intellectual
property rights may be legally combined into bundles
or packages. But, it has to be
done right. There has been
considerable judicial talent
thrown at trying to come up
with bright line per se guidelines making prediction possible. There are some bright
lines. For instance, illegal
mandatory package licensing occurs when a patent owner refuses to
license a particular patent unless a licensee accepts an entire package (or where the
patent owners royalty scale has the same
result). It would be helpful if courts had
taken a consistent analytical approach
to tying and bundling cases involving
intellectual property. But, they have not

24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

(employment insurance for lawyers).

This has been the underlying impetus
for the FTCs laying out a rule of rea-

son approach to intellectual property

bundling as is reflected in its Antitrust
Guidelines for the Licensing of Intellectual
Property (Antitrust-IP Guidelines). The
Antitrust-IP Guidelines recognize that

to license one or more items of intellectual property on the licensees purchase of

another item of intellectual property or a
good or a service has been held in some
cases to constitute illegal tying. But,
it also states that [a]lthough tying arrangements may result in anticompetitive
effects, such arrangements can . . . result
in significant efficiencies and procompetitive benefits. In other words, if there is a
good reason (i.e., considering the totality
of the facts, commerce and free trade are

promoted), courts can allow an otherwise

illegal connections of separate pieces of
IP. Is your head hurting yet?

Guidelines, a court can consider both the
anticompetitive effects and the efficiencies attributable to a tie. The Feds are
likely to challenge a tying arrangement

if: (1) the seller has market power

in the tying product, [which the Feds
will not presume necessarily just because the license involves a patent,
copyright, or trade secret]; (2) the arrangement has an adverse effect on
competition in the relevant market
for the tied product; and (3) efficiency justifications for the arrangement
do not outweigh the anticompetitive
effects. If a package
license is found to constitute tying, the Feds
will evaluate it using
the same rule of reason
principles they use to
analyze tying arrangements that do not involve IP.
Whether the legal
analysis applied to
intellectual
property
bundling is some form
of the per se rule or the
more expansive rule of
reason, it will be incumbent upon a plaintiff to establish that a
defendant has market
power in the tying product.
Market power is not gonna
be presumed merely from
the existence of a patent.
Basically,
the
Feds
will take this approach.
Although the intellectual
property right (lets say your
patent) confers the power
to exclude with respect to a
specific product, there will
often be sufficient actual or
potential close substitutes
that prevent the exercise of
market power. So, the Feds
will investigate the relevant
market to determine whether the intellectual property
at issue grants any market power in dollars and cents. Even if such market power
is found, the Feds will further investigate
whether the business practice under scrutiny is likely to be anticompetitive on balance. Though some would say that the
risk of litigation is fairly small (that the
Feds or an individual plaintiff will come

after you for anti-trust), the state of the

law today makes risky contracts a bit too
dangerous. Be advised that if you decide
to sue upon the basis of a patent that has
been licensed in a bundling arrangement,
it may trigger an antitrust counterclaim.
One way to [offer] package licenses
and not get immediately hauled into court
is to make sure theres an alternative to
the tied product that is readily available.
This approach does not provide a complete out-of-harms way, the difficulty of
proving that the pricing bundle is sufficiently coercive and the expense of bringing an antitrust case may give you some
measure of comfort. However, when the
Feds do identify anticompetitive situations, they will usually pursue them.
I know. Where the hell does this leave
the C-suite trying to license a package of
IP? It tells us that we need to seek out an
anti-trust expert BEFORE negotiations
get too far down the pike. But, maybe
overarching all of this, is that it tells us
that the nuisance of doing so better be
worth the trouble.CW

Exterior Architectural
Coatings Market
A healthy housing market is cause for optimism for the exterior coatings market.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

ccording to data from the National Association

of Realtors, existing-home sales are predicted to
rise approximately 7 percent in 2015 behind a
strengthening economy, solid job gains and a healthy
increase in home prices. On the heels of improvements
in sales of existing homes comes additional paint sales.
When a home is sold, its not uncommon that it gets two
paint jobs, said Tim Bosveld, vice president marketing
at Dunn-Edwards. The first paint job is performed by
the seller to get the property ready for sale. The second
paint job is performed by the new home buyer because
they want colors that match their own tastes. On the
new residential construction front, new home building is
also improving. The improvement varies from market to
market. With new home construction comes additional
exterior architectural paint sales.
Bosveld said Dunn-Edwards is cautiously optimistic
about market improvements. Consumer confidence
has been improving, but the trend is still moving up and
down, he added. This uncertainty puts pressure on
households to reduce and/or manage spending very carefully. There is continued talk about interest rates rising
and this affects borrowing rates. Higher rates make it
more challenging for homebuyers to enter the market.
On a brighter side, early predictions for 2015 were first
time homebuyers were expected to enter the market
again. Also, there is pent up demand for property maintenance
that home and property owners need to address. To continue to
defer expenses could lead to major renovation costs. This trend
is providing gains in the remodeling market as a new class of
DIY-ers are taking on projects, versus hiring professionals, to
save money.

and Canada, PPG Industries. Housing and commercial indicators call for continued growth, which in turn positively impacts
the architectural coatings industry.
According to Dean Peterson, business development manager,
metal building products, The Sherwin-Williams Company, it is the
underlying dynamics of improvements in housing like increased

homesteading among millennials, increases in multigenerational
housing, and remodeling trends for existing homes that are
leading the areas where there has been the most growth.
This includes the use of higher quality, longer performing
exterior coatings, he explained. Products such as metal roofing and structural windows with fluoropolymer coatings that
carry longer warranties are now being used frequently in residential construction. The demand for a wider variety of colors,
better color consistency and better durability has driven siding
manufacturers to seek out higher quality coatings that provide
them added throughput benefits as well. These include faster
cure rates and reduced racking time like Sherwin-Williams KemAqua BP Siding Plus, which employs a self cross-linking resin to
achieve these benefits.
According to Peterson, new construction and the retrofit
market are both expected to achieve slow growth in the coming years. Window manufacturers expect growth in both the
aluminum and the composite market, he said. Energy efficient
and smart homes will use building materials that will reduce
maintenance and improve thermal characteristics. Another sign
of improvement includes an advancement in the quality of coatings in this market. Coatings that reduce the need for recoating
during application or provide longer service life help to ensure
quality and durability. With that said, a problem the industry
now faces is a shortage of skilled help in the building trades.
Though many improved coatings limit the amount of time
builders or remodelers spend to recoat, there is still a need to fill
the growing demand for these positions.

LEED and Green Building

Over the last two decades, paint and coatings manufacturers
have increased research and development efforts to develop
low- and zero- VOC technology for paints, stains, caulks and
sealants. Delivering premium quality that rivals their higher
VOC counterparts, reduced VOC paint products offer many
benefits for professionals and consumers alike.
All of PPGs products are researched and tested to meet
the highest quality standards, said Mary Ellen Shivetts, senior
product stewardship manager, PPG Architectural Coatings, U.S.
and Canada. PPG was one of the first pioneers in the paint
industry in developing new performance standards for zero and
low-VOC products. Many of our products have zero- or lowVOC content*(*colorants added to base paints may increase
VOC level significantly depending on color choice), allowing
our products to meet a variety of governmental regulations and
third-party standards nationwide.
For example, PPGs SIKKENS PROLUXE Wood Finishes
Rubbol stain has < 100 grams of VOCs per liter (g/L), while the
U.S. EPA regulates that stains do not exceed 550 VOCs (g/L)
for semi-transparent stains or 350 VOCs (g/L) for opaque/solids
color stains.
Also, the PPG PITTSBURGH PAINTS and PPG PAINTS
brands offer various zero- and low-VOC* paint options with
low odor for painting occupied spaces, including PPG Pittsburgh
Paints WONDER-PURE and PPG Paints SPEEDHIDE Zero

interior zero-VOC* latex paints.

Recently, Valspar introduced Fluropon Pure, a reduced hazardous materials focused coating, ideal for architectural projects with
extreme environmental requirements. Fluropon Pure is a Red List
compliant coating that will support customers who participate in
LEED v4 and Living Building Challenges Declare programs.
Designed with transparency top-of-mind, architects and
building owners alike can rest assured knowing Fluropon Pure
coatings are energy efficient and not harmful to the environment, said Jeff Alexander, vice president of sales, Valspar. We
are proud to be a company that keeps sustainability and the
environment at the forefront of our innovations, a trend we see
growing across the architectural market. We were the first company to incorporate biorenewable materials, like vegetable oil,
in our backers and interior coil applications. In fact, methods
behind the technology have been patented. Additionally, we offer cool coatings like, Fluropon SR, a solar reflective coating
that reduces air conditioning stress, heat island effect and overall energy consumption. Valspar is continually striving to provided the largest color palette and the highest SR values on the
market today. Fluropon SR was specifically designed for metal
roofing, a growing architectural trend weve found to be present
in many new construction projects.
Peterson of Sherwin-Williams predicted that the use of water-based coatings for wood architectural products and powder coatings for metal architectural products will continue to
grow. Liquid coatings are now offered with higher solids,
lower VOCs and sustainable raw materials, he noted. Our
SHER-NAR 5000 Architectural Baking Enamel holds the sole
U.S. spray license for Arkemas Kynar 500 FSF PVDF resin.
This fluorosurfactant-free license means that 100 percent Kynar
500 FSF PVDF resin is used, which allows architects to meet
the stringent AAMA 2605-13 specifications and provide longlasting performance in a variety of weather conditions. It provides an environmentally responsible approach as its base resin
guards against chalking, pitting, chipping and premature aging
while delivering long-life protection for color and gloss.
Dunn-Edwards also offers a variety of ultra-low and zero
VOC coatings for architectural use. The range of products,
such as Evershield an Ultra-Premium Exterior Paint Line and
Everest, provide a green coatings solution for any exterior or
interior project, said Bosveld. In addition to simply offering
these types of products, we also provide unique services such as
a Green Building, CHPS (California High Performance Schools)
and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Specification Guides. In terms of actual coatings formulations, all
Dunn-Edwards manufactured products are EG-FREE. Ethylene
Glycol (EG), a solvent often used in water-based paints, is listed
as a Toxic Air Contaminant (TAC) and Hazardous Air Pollutant
(HAP). In 1983, we were the first in the industry to voluntarily
replace EG with Propylene Glycol, a non-toxic alternative generally regarded as safe by the FDA, so that all our paints contain
neither EG nor any other TAC or HAP compound. DunnEdwards is the first paint company to label its products with
RAVOC ratings Reactivity-Adjusted VOC Content a better

way to measure how much a coating might affect air quality.
Lastly, in 2011, Dunn-Edwards opened the worlds first and only
LEED Gold-certified paint manufacturing facility in Phoenix, AZ.
Encompassing manufacturing, product development, quality control and more, the 336,000-sq. ft. facility is designed to be the
greenest in the industry.

Color Trends
Of course, durability and sustainability are key features when
selecting exterior coatings, but the actual color is the number
one concern for homeowners and business-owners alike.
PPG color experts have identified four of the most popular
residential exterior color combinations. These four color combinations are: Warm Neutrals: natural and authentic colors that are
inviting and gentle; Cool Neutrals: classic and stately colors that
are forever and noble; Gray Green Blue: colors of tranquility
and natural harmony that are serene and coasta; and Cream
Yellow Russet: warm, joyful colors that are friendly and cozy.
In addition to these home color trends, exterior glossy finishes are also trending for business owners who want to achieve
a high-end, premium look for their offices, which can be inviting and appealing to potential customers, said Dee Schlotter,
national color marketing manager, PPG Architectural Coatings,
U.S. and Canada.
Valspar noted its customers are looking for unique ways to
achieve a textured or patterned look by experimenting with different ways to use colors and prints. One of the ways were
meeting their needs is through our Fluropon Effects, specifically Kameleon and Nova coatings, said Alexander. Valspar
Kameleon coatings offer a prismatic, pearlescent finish to a
buildings exterior and appears to shift in color when viewed
from different angles or sunlight. Our Kameleon coatings are
also formulated with our standard 70 percent PVDF resin, ensuring durability as they dazzle in the sunlight. Similarly, Nova
is a 70 percent PVDF coating but offers a more richly saturated
color with a layer of sparkle in gold or silver. More recently,
weve witnessed an increase of roof panels that have patterns
and textures printed on their surface. Architects who want the
durability benefits of metal roofing paired with a particular appearance, like wood shake, slate, or tile, now have a solution
with Valspars printed coatings.
In residential coatings colors the largest exterior volume colors remain the same, Peterson said. But more and more builders are taking risks with color and combining materials. In the
Southeast, for example, they are highlighting otherwise disguised
architectural elements, such as gutters, with dark, bold colors
against mid-tone or lighter colors for a contrast. Much of this is
due to a business/competition strategy, but the consumer is also
tired of me too offerings. For nonresidential coatings, popular
colors include Hartford green in the Northeast, adobe or brick
red in the Southwest and forest green in the Northwest. Silver
metallic and copper metallic are also popular accent colors.
For exteriors, color is coming on strong from front door colors
to full home coloring, said Sara McLean, color marketing manager at Dunn-Edwards. Front doors are always great to highlight a

pop of color if a homeowner is too nervous to put a lot of color on

the home, said McLean. Other homeowners who have a historic
home such as a mid-century modern find the fun splash of color
on the front door brings added drama to the faade. Front door
colors that are trending this year include cobalt blue, teal blue, deep
cranberry red, brown with a reddish-purple undertone, steel gray,
pumpkin, ivy green and a misty shade of blue-gray.

New Products
Coatings manufactuerers offers a wide variety of exterior architectural coatings, featuring enhanced performance options.
Valspar recently introduced two new lines to the family, Fluropon
Extreme and Fluropon Effects Nova coatings. Fluropon Extreme,
a smooth hard coat, is the most damage resistant coating Valspar
offers to date. Weve designed it to withstand the kinds of abrasions that occur both before and after installation. Fluropon
Extreme recently tested above and beyond current standards in
withstanding extreme wear conditions, said Alexander. It is a
great choice for a wide variety of uses; its especially well suited to
tough installation process such as roofing. Our other recent innovation, Fluropon Nova, is a color effect coating that offers richer
and deeper colors with an intense sparkle in gold or silver never
before seen in typical 70 percent PVDF architectural coatings
a patented pending formulation. Fluropon Nova maintains the
durability and color matching features architects and contractors
have come to depend on, but with an added shimmer and brilliant
finish that is sure to turn heads.
The PPG Pittsburgh Paints brand recently introduced its reformulated, premium line of REGENCY Paint + Primer-In-One
acrylic latex paints, which includes exterior and interior/exterior
formulations. Regency Exterior provides maximum protection
against weathering and outdoor conditions, while maintaining a
freshly painted appearance through outstanding color retention
and resistance to dirt and dust, said John Trenta, senior brand
manager, PPG Pittsburgh Paints. Regency Interior/Exterior delivers lasting performance in a glossy finish with outstanding
adhesion, hardness and scrubbability, and it is ideal for painting
trim, cabinets, banisters, doors and molding.
Sherwin-Williams new Kem Aqua Fluor products are tailored for the burgeoning vinyl window market, and combine
a wide array of colors with performance, durability and ease
of application and handling for the manufacturer. SherwinWilliams SHER-NAR 5000 Architectural Baking Enamel and
Kem-Aqua BP Siding Plus offer unique-to-the-industry benefits
to both building product manufacturers and end users that provide product reliability and sustainable advantages.
Dunn-Edwards recently launched ENDURALASTIC 10
is an ultra-premium specialty 100 percent acrylic elastomeric wall coating designed for use on exterior surfaces.
ENDURALASTIC 10 has exceptional flexibility, chalking and
binder degradation resistance, and provides outstanding waterproofing protection against wind-driven rain by bridging
hairline cracks, the company reports. ENDURALASTIC 10
also provides excellent adhesion and outstanding alkali and
efflorescence resistance on properly prepared masonry. CW

Adhesives & Sealants

Market advances are being made in lockstep with increased construction activity.

Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

he adhesives and sealants market is growing at a healthy

clip. According to a report published earlier this year, the
U.S. demand for adhesives and sealants is expected to
reach nearly $13 billion in 2019. Researchers at The Freedonia
Group, a Cleveland-based industry market research firm, predict that demand will increase 2.8 percent each year to 6.4 billion pounds in 2019.
A turnaround in construction activity, combined with the
expanding use of adhesives and sealants in manufacturing and
assembly, will underpin demand gains. Analyst Carolyn Zulandt
found: Adhesive bonding technologies will make further inroads in applications historically dominated by mechanical fasteners and other alternative joining systems.
The report goes on to state that emulsion and dispersion
adhesives and sealants will remain the leading product type.
The ongoing displacement of solvent-based products is expected to support increases as end users strive to meet emissions

regulations through the adoption of water-based and higher

solids formulations. The fastest annual growth through 2019
is expected for reactive adhesives and sealants, driven by rising demand in major markets and trends favoring higher value
materials. Silicone and polyurethane adhesives and sealants will
post the most rapid gains among reactive types, supported by
their superior performance characteristics.
Those statistics, however, are specific to the U.S. Globally,
the overall consumption of formulated adhesives reached
$29.4 billion in 2014. A study by consulting firm Kusumgar,
Nerlfi & Growney, released earlier this year, found that the
volume of formulated adhesives has increased modestly
since the 2009 recession and forecast an annual growth rate of
5 percent through 2019.
According to the report, growth in Europe and North
America is forecast at a mature 2 percent annual rate while the
Asia-Pacific region, led by China, is forecast to expand at an 8

percent annual rate. China represented two-thirds of the formulated adhesive volume in the Asia-Pacific region in 2014 and
32 percent of the global share. Adhesive growth in China is
moderating but a still robust 8 percent annual rate of increase is
forecast through 2019. Japan is the second largest consumer in
Asia-Pacific with 8 percent of the volume with growth forecast
at only 1 percent/yr. India is third in the region with 6 percent of
the volume but will surpass Japan by 2019 owing to its forecast
double-digit rate of growth. Brazil is the leading consumer of
adhesives in South and Central American countries accounting
for over 60 percent of the regions volume. A modest 5 percent
annual rate of growth is forecast for Brazil and the region.

A Manufacturers Perspective
Henkel is a solutions provider for adhesives, sealants and
functional coatings worldwide. The company has products in
many industrial markets, including packaging and consumer
goods, transportation and metal, durable goods, electronics
and building. Holger Elfes, Henkel Adhesive Technologies,
Media Relations, said that the companys Adhesive
Technologies business unit recorded positive organic sales
growth in the second quarter.
At 2,343 million euros, we once again achieved the highestever absolute level of quarterly sales. Adjusted operating profit
increased in the high single-digit range. At 17.0 percent, adjusted return on sales was below the high level of the prior-year
quarter, he said.
From a regional perspective, business performance was

again successful in the emerging markets, with solid growth

rates. The Africa/Middle East region achieved very strong
growth. Growth of our businesses in Latin America was strong,
and our business performance in the Asia (excluding Japan) region was positive. In the Eastern Europe region, we recorded
positive sales performance, despite the ongoing difficult political
situation in parts of the region.
Sales performance in the mature markets was positive overall. Our businesses in the mature markets of the Asia-Pacific region posted very strong growth, and our sales performance in
Western Europe was positive. In North America, however, sales
were slightly lower year on year.
In terms of segment growth, Elfes said that the company
posted positive sales performance in the packaging and consumer goods business area.
Through the acquisition of Novamelt GmbH based in
Wehr, Germany, we further strengthened our position in pressure sensitive hotmelt adhesives, he said. Novamelt provides
a comprehensive range of specialized pressure sensitive hotmelt
adhesives which are used mainly in self-adhesive labels and adhesive tapes.
The companys transportation and metal business unit
achieved the highest growth rate, Elfes said. Performance by the
companys acoustic solutions and structural adhesives for the
automotive industry was once again particularly dynamic, he
said, with tailor-made product innovations for automotive engineering driving growth.
Growth momentum was also noted in the maintenance,

repair and overhaul business, as well as in electronics. Elfes
said businesses in thermal management products for the electronics industry which Henkel assumed with its acquisition
of The Bergquist Company in 2014 achieved double-digit
sales growth.
Growth can sometimes be thwarted by rising raw material
and energy costs, though Elfes said that Henkels Q2 report,
released in August of this year, predicts stable prices for raw
materials, packaging and purchased goods and services.
The measures taken to reduce purchasing risks include
active supplier portfolio management through our globally
engaged, cross-divisional sourcing capability, together with
strategies aimed at securing price and volume both through contracts and, where appropriate and possible, through financial
hedging instruments.
Furthermore, we work in interdisciplinary teams within
Research and Development, Supply Chain Management and
Purchasing on devising alternative formulations and packaging
forms so as to be able to respond flexibly to unforeseen fluctuations in raw material prices. We also avoid becoming dependent
on individual suppliers so as to better secure the constant supply of the goods and services that we require. Finally, close collaboration with our strategic suppliers plays an exceptionally
important role in our risk management, Elfes said.
Volitale Organic Compounds (VOCs) and other environmental regulations have affected the market for adhesives and
sealants. According to Elfes, Henkels PUR hotmelts are becoming more and more popular with the furniture industry.
Edgebanding using reactive polyurethane hotmelts has
proved superior to other methods. The numerous technical and
visual advantages of hotmelts high, durable bond strength, resistance to moisture and heat, low application weight ensuring
an ultra-thin bond line make Technomelt PUR the preferred
alternative to other methods on the market.
Manufacturers of kitchen and bathroom cabinets in particular have recognized these advantages and are switching their
manufacturing lines to PUR hotmelts. With Technomelt PUR
270/7 G, Henkel has developed an edgebanding adhesive that
comes in granules and can therefore be processed immediately
in existing production lines with standard melting pots, he said.
Responding to the continuing demand for both white furniture fronts and eco-aware materials, the company has introduced white-colored adhesives and PUR ME hotmelts to
its Technomelt PUR line. The suffix ME stands for MicroEmission, and this product group has up to 90% less isocyanate emissions and is therefore exempt from hazard-labeling,
Elfes said.

New Products, Technologies

Henkel has also recently launched Bonderite M-NT 20120, a
next-generation conversion coating. This phosphate-free multimetal pretreatment technology effectively protects steel, zinc
and aluminum surfaces against flash rust. Bonderite M-NT
20120 reduces process complexity and thus enables faster cycle
times while cutting energy consumption and waste, Elfes said.

Henkel has also launched Loctite GC 10, an electrically

conductive solder paste, which can be stored at room temperature and retains its application properties for a year eliminating the previous need for expensive cooling during transport
and storage.
H.B. Fuller is a supplier of adhesive coated technologies
for the building and construction, automotive, paper converting, woodworking adhesive, tile and floor adhesive and other
markets. For the woodworking adhesives market, the company
offers its Sesame line of tapes, strings and hot melts. The companys Sesame hot melt adhesive for on-site plywood composing
features excellent bond for spot head welding joining between
veneer sheets. It has been formulated, according to the company,
for flexibility and to maximize wood yield.
For the paper converting market, H.B. Fuller offers both
Sesame and Enforcer tapes. The Enforcer tape for handle reinforcement was designed to replace plastic handles by preventing
handles from tearing and to prevent contents from breaking or
spilling. They are available in multiple widths, tensile strengths
and melt points.
Swiss company Sika AG has available to its customers
a variety of anchoring and multipurpose adhesives, as well
as waterproof sealers. Its two waterproof sealers are the
Sikagard High Gloss Sealer and Natural Look Clear Sealer.
Sikagard High Gloss Sealer is a water-based, acrylic concrete
and masonry sealer. Sikagard Natural Look Sealer is a commercial grade water repellent sealer that penetrates an absorbent surface to form a seal against the elements, such as water
and chlorides on concrete, masonry, mortar, brick and stone.
This sealer penetrates the surface to form a seal against the
elements such as water and chlorides, which can cause freeze
thaw damage to the surface. According to the company, this
product will not change the surface appearance and resists
the growth of fungi and moss.
Tremco offers a variety of sealants, including silicone, hybrid polyurethane, urethane, specialty, impregnated expanding
foam, and extruded silicone bridge joint. The companys performance silicones are Spectrem, Proglaze and Tremsil, which are
described as cost-effective sealing products for waterproofing
the entire building envelope. Its Spectrem line has several offerings. Spectrem 1 is an ultra low-modulus, high-performance,
one-part, moisture-curing silicone joint sealant. Spectrem 2 is a
medium-module, one-part, high-performance, neutral-cure silicone sealant ideal or a variety of perimeter caulking and glazing applications. Spectrem 3 is a general-purpose, low-modulus,
high-performance, one-part, neutral-cure, non-staining, low dirt
pickup, construction-grade silicone sealant.
Spectrem 4-TS is a multi-component, neutral-curing,
nonstaining, low dirt pickup, low-modulus silicone sealant
specially formulated for use in dynamically moving building
joints. Spectrem 800 is a low-modulus, high-performance,
one-part, gun-grade silicone parking structure and highway
joint sealant. Spectrem 900SL is a low-modulus, high-performance, one-part, gun-grade silicone parking structure and
highway joint sealant. CW

Waterborne
Traffic Markings
Shortening the Development Cycle and Improving the Performance
By Mike Kaufman, Senior Applications Development Leader, Arkema Coating Resins
Abstract
White and yellow traffic markings,
used for the demarcation of traffic,
are a common sight on most roads. In
North America the majority of traffic
markings are applied as paint to the
road surface.
Before traffic marking paint can
be approved for use it must be submitted for evaluation to ensure that
it conforms to federal and/or state
specifications. Testing includes the
application of transverse traffic marking to test decks exposed to a high
volume of vehicular traffic and the
elements, as part of the National
Transportation Product Evaluation
Program (NTPEP), and may last as
long as three years.
In an effort to reduce the time and
cost associated with developing higher
performance traffic marking paints,
abrasion resistance has been proposed
as an accelerated method for evaluating the durability of traffic markings.
It is a simple and inexpensive technique which yields highly reproducible
results in a short period of time. These
results correlate well with available
NTPEP test deck retroreflectivity and
durability ratings.
Abrasion resistance testing suggests
that traffic markings with 3 year durability could be achieved with a 15 wet
mil line if a high durability latex binder
was employed in the traffic marking
paint formulation.

hite and yellow traffic markings, used for the demarcation

of traffic, are a common sight
on almost all roads. These markings enhance driver safety under varying weather
and lighting conditions by continuously
providing drivers with information concerning vehicle speed, lane delineation,
road direction, warnings about upcoming conditions, and indications of where
passing is allowed.
The daytime visibility of traffic markings relies on the color contrast between
the marking and the road deck. Color
contrast alone is inadequate to ensure
acceptable night time visibility. Instead,
embedded glass beads function as retroreflective elements reflecting light from
vehicle headlights. Over time, mechanical
abrasion by vehicles reduces traffic marking performance by damaging or dislodging beads and ultimately removing the
markings from the road deck.
In North America the majority of
traffic markings are applied as paint to
the road surface. Before traffic marking
paint can be approved for use it must be
submitted for evaluation to ensure that
it conforms to federal and/or state specifications. Specifications for pavement
markings usually consist of some combination of chemical composition and
performance requirements. The cost and
availability of some chemical components
used in paint manufacture vary dramatically and, as a result, detailed composition specifications favored by highway

agencies in the past are being replaced by

performance specifications. In some cases, a combination performance-composition specification is used which indicates
the percentage by weight of each ingredient, by generic classification, without
specifying a brand name or chemical formula. Performance testing involves the
application of transverse traffic marking
to test decks exposed to a high volume of
vehicular traffic and the elements, as part
of the National Transportation Product
Evaluation Program (NTPEP), and testing may last as long as three years.
Once a traffic marking has demonstrated its conformance with the specification, it is included on federal and state
approved product lists (APLs). Traffic
marking manufacturers with products on
an APL can then bid on projects.
This testing process was designed to
ensure that all traffic markings meet a
minimum quality level and has been very
effective in achieving this objective, but
it has also had several unintended consequences. The relatively high cost associated with sample submission has resulted
in only a limited number of test paints
being placed on the test deck every year.
Compositional restrictions have limited
the paints to a very narrow formulation
window which, when coupled with the
long testing cycle, has substantially constrained the development of new technology. The net effect is that overall product
performance has not dramatically increased and potential enhancements for

driver safety have failed to be developed.

In an effort to reduce the time and cost
associated with developing higher performance traffic marking paints, other methods for assessing product performance
and numerous accelerated methodologies
have been proposed for evaluating the
durability of traffic markings, and indeed
transverse striping on the NTPEP test deck
is itself a form of accelerated testing. No
matter the technique a correlation must be
established between accelerated test results
and real world performance. An ideal accelerated testing protocol would be highly
correlated to real world performance, but
also must be inexpensive, reproducible, accessible and significantly shorten the time
interval to yield results.
Of all the accelerated methods proposed, Abrasion Resistance, as described
by ASTM D2486-96, most closely meets
this set of criterion. It is probably the least
expensive and most common technique
for evaluating the wear resistance of
coatings. The technique is highly repro-

for dozens of different traffic markings
can be obtained in a weeks time. The
use of abrasive scrub media simulates the
abrading action of sand and salt embedded in tires. One obvious concern is that
traffic markings are not usually evaluated with embedded traffic beads and
so the question may arise as to whether
a correlation exists between abrasive
wear and the loss of retroreflectivity.
Retroreflectivity is defined as the light
that returns to the light source.
In an attempt to establish a correlation
between abrasion resistance, durability and
retroreflectivity, data from NTPEP trials
were compared to laboratory test results.

Experimental
Paint Formulations
Traffic marking paints utilized in this
work were prepared using the formulas
shown in Table 1. Three latexes (A, B and
C) with varying abrasion resistance were
included in the study.

NTPEP Test Deck

Transverse traffic paint pavement markings were applied to test decks as a part
of the NTPEP; paints were tested on both
asphalt and concrete.
Test decks were located on straight,
flat roadways that were not likely to have
areas of excessive wear caused by braking or turning, were fully exposed to sunlight during daylight hours, and had good
drainage. Average daily traffic (ADT) was
approximately 15,000.
All lines were applied in the transverse
direction, or perpendicular to the flow of
traffic, using a walk-behind striping machine with traction drive and spray guns
similar to those used on commercial striping trucks. Lines measured four inches in
width and either 15 1 or 30 1 wet
mil in thickness. To calibrate the spray
application of each paint, the four-inch
wide stripe was sprayed onto a test panel
of known dimensions, which was then
weighed. To calculate the lines thickness,
Coatings World | 39

FEATURE Waterborne Traffic Markings

that weight was then divided by both the
paints density and the area of the panel
covered by paint.
Glass beads conforming to AASHTO
M 247, Type II and IV from Potters
Industries, Inc., were applied to the
painted lines of interest at a rate of 6
lbs and 12 lbs of beads per gal of paint,
respectively. Beads were applied from a
dispensing gun immediately following
the corresponding paint gun. Glass bead
dosages were determined by weighing a
panel striped with a bead embedded paint
film and subtracting out the already calibrated amount of paint on the panel.
Retroflectivity and Durability
Measurements
Within seven days of striping the lines
and approximately monthly thereafter,
for a period of 24 months, retroreflectivity was measured on each marking
in the skip-line and wheel track areas.
Retroreflectivity was measured using a
LTL2000 retroreflectometer (Delta Light
and Optics, Denmark), LTL-X retroreflectometer (Delta Light and Optics), or other
approved equivalent device exhibiting the
same geometric design criteria. The ratings
were averaged for replicate lines.
Durability assessments were made
near the skip-line and in the wheel tracks.
In the wheel tracks, an area covering nine
inches on either side of the wheel track
midpoint was examined and rated. The
durability rating was an assessment of the
percent of the marking remaining divided
by 10. For example, a line without any
notable wear receives a 10. Ratings were
averaged for replicate lines.
Abrasion Resistance
The abrasion resistance of the traffic marking paints was assessed following ASTM
D2486-96. Paint films were prepared on
a Leneta Form P-121-10N plastic chart
utilizing a 7, 15 or 30 mil drawdown bar.
Two paints were cast side-by-side with
one functioning as the control and the
other as the test film. After drying for one
week at 25 C and 50% relative humidity the paint films were scrubbed utilizing
a Gardner Straight Line Washability and
Wear Abrasion machine equipped with
three brushes. The average number of

cycles to failure was reported.

To calculate the lines thickness, the
weight of paint applied to the Leneta chart
was divided by both the paints density
and the area of the panel covered by paint.

Discussion
NTPEP Trials
The durability of the traffic marking paints
was assessed at numerous times throughout the two year trial. Figure 1 illustrates

Figure 4: Skip-line retroreflectivity of white traffic marking paints.

the impact of 10 months of road wear on

the appearance of traffic marking paints
applied at 15 1 wet mils line thickness.
These paints differed only in the latex used
in their formulation. Differences in line
durability are already apparent even after
this short period of time.
Figure 2 illustrates the impact of 24
months of road wear on lines applied at
15 1 and 30 1 wet mils line thickness.
The thinner line is quite worn and would be
considered in need of re-striping. The thicker
lines are more intact, but a clear difference
can be seen between different latex types.
The durability rating of the traffic
marking paints over the 24 month testing interval is depicted in Figure 3. The

rate of degradation was found to be a

function of line thickness and latex type.
Unless otherwise specified, traffic markings with a durability rating less than 4
(less 40% remaining) are considered in
need of replacement.
Figure 4 illustrates the skip-line retroreflectivity of the traffic markings. The
retroreflectivity of the traffic marking
can be expected to decrease as beads are
lost or damaged. Below 100-150 millicandales/m2/lux markings are not easily
seen by drivers. The higher initial retroreflectivity of the 30-mil lines is a result
of the use of larger Type IV beads and
the higher application rate of 12 lbs/gal
of paint. White lines also generally have

November 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

higher initial retroreflecitvity than yellow.

The rate of degradation of retroreflectivity was also found to be a function of line
thickness and latex type.
It was found that the degradation in the
skip-line retroreflectivity was highly correlated to the wheel-track durability rating
with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. This
finding suggests that durability and retroreflectivity degrade in a similar manner and
higher durability markings will tend to retain an acceptable level of retroreflectivity
longer. Figure 5 outlines the skip-line retroreflectivity predictive formula developed
with data from the NTPEP trials, showing
the correlation to wheel track durability.
From this data it is clear that the life
expectancy of a traffic marking can be enhanced simply by applying a thicker line.
Abrasion Resistance Testing
Standard durability traffic marking
paints are applied at 15 wet mils and durable markings at 30 wet mils. Abrasion
resistance testing protocol specifies films
be applied with a 7-mil drawdown applicator which, depending on paint rheology, yields a film only 4-5 mils thick.
Thus abrasion testing does not directly
provide information on the durability of
thicker films. To establish the impact of
film thickness on abrasion resistance, a
series of films of varying thicknesses were
cast and their performance tested.
Figure 6 illustrates the scrub performance of the traffic marking paints applied to the NTPEP test deck. Clearly film
thickness has a dramatic impact on abrasion resistance. This finding is not surprising since the test involves the removal
of material with an abrasive media, so
it would be expected that doubling the
film thickness would double the number
of abrasive cycles required to remove the
paint film.
Since both paints passed 1 year durability testing when applied at 15 1 wet
mils and 2 year durability testing when
applied at 30 1 wet mils on the NTPEP
deck, a correlation between abrasion resistance and durability can be inferred. It
would appear that to achieve 1 year durability on the NTPEP test deck a minimum
abrasion resistance of 5,000 cycles is required. It follows that 2 year durability

line thickness

Figure 8: Abrasion resistance of white traffic marking paints as a function of

line thickness
Figure 6: Abrasion resistance of white traffic marking paints as a function of
line thickness

would require a minimum abrasion resistance of 10,000 cycles.

Further validating the approach, the slight difference in performance between the two traffic marking paints noted on the test
deck was also observed in the abrasion resistance testing.
The use of abrasion resistance testing as a tool to guide new
product development promises not only to shorten the product
development cycle, but also suggests significant improvement in
the durability of traffic marking paint is possible. It has long
been recognized that the ratio of latex binder to coating pigmentation has a significant impact on abrasion resistance; this fact is
illustrated in Figure 7.
The drawback to this approach is that formulating a higher
latex binder level would increase the cost of the paint formulation, placing the paint manufacturer at a disadvantage in the
competitive bid process.
Alternatively, higher abrasion resistant latex binders could

dramatically improve durability. Figure 8 illustrates the performance of a traffic marking paint based on a high abrasion resistance latex (Latex C). This approach would enable multi-year
performance without requiring the application of thicker lines.
Indeed the abrasion resistance data suggests that 3 year durability
could be achieved with a 15 wet mil line if a high durability latex
binder was employed in the traffic marking paint formulation.

Conclusions
Abrasion resistance appears to be a promising tool in the
development of new traffic marking paints. It is a simple
and inexpensive technique which yields highly reproducible
results in a short period of time. These results correlate well
with available NTPEP test deck retroreflectivity and durability ratings.

technology and industry-leading processes to meet the emerging sustainability needs of brand owners.
Xeifu is the second company to earn
a place in the prestigious Program, after
Korean PU synthetic materials manufacturer Duksung Co., Ltd. It is also the first
Chinese company joining the Program.
A growing number of brands and retailers are becoming interested in sourcing sustainable materials, and further,
they need more assurances about the
origins and integrity of those materials. The Program was developed to link
these brands with manufacturers capable
of efficiently delivering innovative materials and sustainability best practice,
said Nick Smith, Global Head of Textile

Cappelle Pigments Adds

to its Benzimidazolone Range

o complete the yellow shade space

in its Benzimidazolone-based pigment offering, Cappelle Pigments
launched Lysopac Yellow 9410C. This
PY194 is a green shade yellow with excellent hiding ability and high color strength,
according to the company.
Lysopac Yellow 9410C is a greenish
yellow which closes the color space gap
between Lysopac 5110C (PY151) and
Lysopac Yellow 5410C (PY154). Due to
the much better performance in hiding
power, color strength and clean shade
than current available products of this
C.I. No., this grade enables a lower cost
formula in its final application.
The excellent light and weather fastness properties provides that the Lysopac
9410C can be used in a wide range of industrial coating applications like powder
coatings, water and solvent based paints
as well as in isocyanate cured systems and
amine cured epoxies.

Ross Introduces New Batch

High Shear Mixers
Ross has introduced the new Batch High
Shear Mixer, which the company describes as an essential tool for general
purpose mixing, powder wet-out, deagglomeration, dispersion, emulsification
and homogenization. It features a fourblade rotor running within a close tolerance stator at variable tip speeds up to
3,000-4,000 ft/min. As the rotor continuously draws product components and
expels them through the stator openings, the batch is subjected to high levels of mechanical and hydraulic shear.
Interchangeable stators with different
size openings provide added flexibility
to adapt to a variety of applications and
shear requirements.
The Ross Model HSM-130 is driven
by a 30HP motor and supplied with an
air/oil hydraulic lift for easy positioning
and access to the mixing head. The lift
also allows users to conveniently utilize
multiple tanks and accommodate a range

of batch sizes. If preferred, the shaft

length can be customized as well.
An adjustable downthrust propeller enhances circulation and eliminates
floating solids. A modified rotor/stator
assembly capable of sub-surface powder
injection is offered for processing difficult-to-disperse powders that tend to dust
or form tough agglomerates upon contact
with liquid. This option, called the Solids/
Liquid Injection Manifold (SLIM), is also
available on Ross High Shear Mixers designed for inline/continuous operation.
Standard and sanitary models range
from 3/4 to 100 HP, in both atmospheric
and vacuum/pressure designs.

New Dow Emulsion

Technology Offers Shear
Stability in Flat to SemiGloss Paints
Dow Coating Materials has introduced
new ROVACE 10 Vinyl Acrylic Binder.
Developed with both the formulator and
contractor in mind, this new low-volatile
organic compound (VOC) technology for
flat to semi-gloss interior paints offers excellent manufacturing capabilities.
For formulators, the flexibility of
ROVACE 10 Emulsion helps reduce the
number of considerations factored into
a paint formulation to help meet different quality points across paint lines, the
company stated. For example, ROVACE
10 Emulsion may be added during the
grind stage without any adverse effects
on property performance.
The flexibility of ROVACE 10
Emulsion also offers excellent processing
capabilities for easy pumping and handling. For paint contractors, ROVACE
10 Emulsion offers good spray application and touch-up in starting point formulations. Demonstrating exceptional
color acceptance, ROVACE 10 Emulsion
also helps paint retailers and applicators
match color chips and maintain uniform
color appearance under various conditions of paint age and shear stability.

Final Coat

PPG Coatings Specified for Turkish

Aerospace Industries HURKUS Trainer Aircraft

PG Industries aerospace coatings have been specified by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for the initial production of its
HURKUS new-generation basic trainer for the Turkish Armed Forces, with the potential for additional aircraft if production
is extended.
Fifteen aircraft will be painted with DEFT military polyurethane topcoat and eco-friendly lead- and chromate-free epoxy primer
as well as specialty coatings for specific functionality to perform in the HURKUS trainer aircrafts demanding operating environment. These include high-solids DESOTHANE HS/CA 8100 abrasion-resistant topcoat, DESOTO high-temperature epoxy primer
and topcoat, DeSoto high-solids integral fuel tank coating, and an antistatic coating.
According to Mustafa Harman, PPG aerospace sales manager for Turkey, TAI is not only an original equipment manufacturer,
but also a key aviation industry subcontractor that is well acquainted with PPGs coatings as well as its sealants and transparencies. TAI chose PPG coatings for the HURKUS trainer aircraft because its experience has demonstrated the high quality of PPG
products and service, Harman said.
Through its acquisition of Deft Incorporated, PPG extended its portfolio of military coatings to include the Deft product line. CW
