Language Arts
Time is flying by in kindergarten! After we finish up all of our
assessmentsthe students and I will continue on with learning letters/sounds,
blends, digraphs, wall words, reading, and writing.
Weve just finished up our unit on Small Moments in writing workshop and
have worked on a few how to stories. The small moment stories will be
scored and reported in our Language Arts insert to the report card. As we
move into the next semester well move. Please remember that your children
are just beginning writers and their scores will show growth by the end of the
school year. The students and I will next discuss what it means to s-t-r-e-t-ch stories across the page.
All of our students are reading leveled books. During literacy center time,
the students meet with me and/or a Title I teacher in a small group and we are
reading books that are at each students individual reading level. Youll see this
level marked on this coming report card. At this point of the school year,
students need to be reading at level B and then a level D by June!
Please check the ELA insert of your childs report card for scores.

Social Studies/Science
Well be discussing trees in winter as opposed to the changes that we
saw in the fall. In social studies, we discussed the past and watched, The
Ox Cart Man. We watched a movie about things from long ago. We are
talking all about weather and discussing snow. The students listened to the
Snowy Day. You can try too: http://www.ezra-jack-keats.org/

Notes from the teacher:

REMEMBER: Label EVERYTHING with your childs name

Reminder: The children go out EVERY DAY (depending on wind-chill) for

recess. Please make sure to send warm clothing (LABELED WITH A NAME)
for outside play and maybe even an extra set of gloves/mittens to keep in your
childs backpack (in case the first pair gets wet)...weve had a few shivering
children with these weather changes.

Please place popcorn $ (Wednesdays) in a baggie or envelope labeled

with your childs name on it. This way loose change is not floating
around.

your eyes peeled for a note to come home soon.

Math
Were continuing to work on making
sense of problems and solving them by
noticing addition and subtraction signs.
The students are recognizing numbers
and counting using 5-groups. Well
continually be discussing and analyzing
shapes and classifying objects.
At home you can help your children
by practicing writing the numbers
from 0-20 and reviewing addition and
subtraction problems up to 10. We are
discovering number partners for
numbers to 10. For example: 5 can
be1+6, 6+1, 2+4, 4+2, 5+0, 0+5.
There were a few retakes for Unit
2youll get them back before the
card marking.
