President Matassa Takes Oath,

Pledges Service, Transparency
and Unified Government Operations
With his wife, Selma, by his
side, on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016
newly seated Ascension Parish
President Kenny Matassa took
the oath of office in a packed
Donaldsonville Parish
Courthouse, assuring everyone
his administration would be one
committed to serving the
residents of Ascension while
also focusing on transparency,
and operating as a unified
government.
President Matassa was sworn
in by state District Judge Tess
Percy Stromberg following the
swearing in of the 11-member
Parish Council.
First-term members
Councilman Bill Dawson,
Councilman Aaron Lawler and
Councilman John Cagnolatti
joined with Councilman Oliver

Joseph, Councilman Travis

Turner, Councilman Daniel
Doc Satterlee, Councilman
Dempsey Lambert, Councilman
Randy Clouatre, Councilwoman
Teri Casso, Councilman Todd
Lambert and Councilman
Benny Johnson in taking the
oath from Ascension Parish
Court Judge Marilyn Lambert.
The following is taken from
President Matassas
Inauguration Speech On July 4, 1939, thousands
of Yankee fans honored one of
their heroes, Lou Gehrig. In his
brief message, to his fans and
the baseball world, Gehrig said,
Today I consider myself the
luckiest man on earth alive.
And its with much humility
that I say to you today, that I

am the luckiest man alive.

What an honor to stand next to

you as your next Ascension

Parish President. Its been a
long road from my childhood
in Donaldsonville to reach such
an important leadership role.
But rest assured, Im ready for
the challenge and anxious to
get started.
The theme of my next four
years will focus on servant
leadership. Scripture tells us
that Jesus professed it is much
more blessed to give than to
receive.
I found following this philosophy, this is the only pathway
to true success. And I feel
Ascension Parish Government
can elevate its effectiveness
using this approach to leadership. We will lead in the way we
serve others, serve excellence
and serve citizens.
We seek to be difference
makers. There are many
challenges ahead. We need
infrastructure improvements, a
parish wide sewer system,
technology upgrades across all
departments, effective
cost-cutting practices and a
productive approach to problem
solving, to name some of the

more important challenges.

Economically, Ascension is
blessed with a brisk climate and
a bright future. I will continue
to pursue new investments to
open jobs for our citizens and
adding tax dollars to parish
finances.
My expectations of all
employees is that they serve the
taxpayers and each other in a
productive manner.
Team work, improved
cooperation and communication
between parish governmental
bodies, and moving all actions
from the dark to the light of

day are essential components

required to propel our parish
forward.
We are one parish. We need
one vision. The Mississippi
River divides us physically, but
we must become one. Focus is
to create a governmental body
serving every citizen of this
parish.
We will not point fingers to
the past. That is over and done
with. It is our task to begin
where we currently are and
become as great as we are
capable of becoming. It is not
about blame, but boldness.

These are trying and

demanding times demanding
change. Please understand there
will be some chaos because there
is no change free of strife. Your
parish leadership team is committed to serving citizens, not
filling our political hat for the
next election.
We will always do what is
right, not what is self-serving.
In the coming weeks, I will
communicate my vision and the
posture of a number of issues.
You will always know where
we are, and where we are in
the process.
Secrets are now effectively
outlawed.
Our government blanketed
with the sincere serving
approach is the new normal.
Im already looking towards the
future, not with daydreams,
but with a sound strategy for

happened to me in the past

months would not have been
possible without the support of
so many.
First, the voters who believed
in my candidacy, thank you for
your vote of confidence. I am
deeply indebted to your belief in
me. I will never let you down.
Secondly, the many supporters
who volunteered their time to
make the campaign a success, I
could not have won without
you. I appreciate you very much.
Members of the community,
my transition team, employees
and citizens have offered insights
that are invaluable. Thank you
for your wisdom.
For those individuals that
supported other candidates,
please know you are citizens of
the parish and I plan to extend
the same service attitude I
mentioned to you because I was

success.
Ascension Parish citizens
have the right to receive the
leadership that will overcome
obstacles now hindering the
process.
It is a daunting task, but one
our employees are ready to
tackle. It is with a confident
mind and a serving heart that
I ask for your support and
wisdom. Become a part of
the process when you feel
so inclined.
Keep us informed of issues we
may be missing. Join us not
only in serving you, but serving
each other as well. All that has

elected to serve everyone and to

forget about political paybacks.
I also want to thank
everyone for being here to make
this a memorable day. I am
appreciative of the elected
officials present and their
support. I pledge to work with
each of you in a cooperative
manner as we all strive to make
Ascension Parish one of the best
places in which to live and bring
up our families.
Ive saved the best for last.
I am eternally grateful and
thankful for the encouragement
to move forward extended to
me by my family, especially my

wife Selma. She has been the

rock on which I leaned on
throughout the campaign. I lost
precious time with her and the
children by being on the campaign trail. But there were never
complaints, just unwavering support to do what it took to win.
God has a plan for all of us.
Im grateful for the blessing he
extended to me and the ability
to lean on when I needed him
when things became tough. He
gave our family the courage to
cope with the accident of our
son Nick. I am pleased to tell
you, while he still has a long way
to go, we are encouraged by his
progress as you can see him here

today. I thank you for your

prayers. I ask that you continue
praying for his rapid recovery.
Let me leave you in closing
with these thoughts. I shall pass
through this world but once.
Any good therefore that I can
do, or any kindness that I can
show to my fellow human being,
let me do it now. Let me not
defer or neglect it, for I shall not
pass this way again. I love my
God. I love my family and I love
Ascension Parish.
I look forward for an exciting
four years serving each of you.
Thank You. May God bless the
citizens of our parish and our
entire country.

hair and on the other side she
used tape only. This was really
important to not apply too much
pressure or pull to my hair, and I
can really tell they are super light
on my hair.
When using any extension, you
do need to make sure you use
sulfate free shampoo and
conditioner. Also, with these
extensions its important to make
sure you dont use oils on your
hair, at least not towards the
scalp, because it will cause the
tape ins to slip. After getting
sweaty, I also try to dry my hair

ANOTHER FINISHED PRODUCT

Your Best
Hair Day,
Everyday.
You know that Ive done just
about everything to my hair
from coloring it red, blonde and
brown. Ive also tried every type
of strategy to add length to my
hair like adding hair tracks,
weaves, clip in and bonded
extensions.
My biggest challenge with
extensions is that they were too
heavy for my fine, color treated
hair and ended up causing more
breakage and harm to my hair. I
recently started hearing more
about tape in extensions, so I
decided to do some research and
then called one of my friends
Amber Leigh at Vintage salon at
1203 E. Cornerview in
Gonzales. She convinced me to
give them a try, and a month
into having these tape ins, I

absolutely love them!

AFTER

My tapes in extensions were a

brand called Babe that my stylist
recommended. They are about
an inch and a half wide and I got
them in the 18 length.
Other lengths available are
14 and 22.
I purchased two packs of extensions. Each pack costs $80, but
keep in mind you can reuse this
hair over and over as long as you
take care of them like you would
your own hair. (Installation starts
at $135) I ordered a lighter
blonde color other in a auburn
brown color. I must say the
color options for these extensions
are very true to life.

BEFORE

Each weft of hair is connected to

a piece of tape. A section of
your real hair is sandwiched in
between the two wefts, then heat
is applied for just a few seconds
using a flat iron. That is the
extent of the application. But
due to the fragile nature of my
hair, Amber didnt install these
extensions in the traditional
manner. Instead Amber placed

quickly, because I want to make

sure the tape stays put. Another
note: You also have to brush
them at least twice a day with an
extension brush, and you should
also put it in a braid or bun
when going to sleep to keep
tangles at bay.
These extensions are so easy!
They hold a curl for days on end,
and I have so many styling
options. When I wake up in the
morning, I brush my hair and
thats it. I use some dry
shampoo at my roots when I
want to avoid another day of
washing my hair, but thats it!
These extensions will grow out
with your hair, so you may want
to get them taken out and reapplied in eight to twelve weeks,
depending on how fast your hair
grows. Amber even mentioned
that she has one client that had
them in for 18 weeks!
So, if youre thinking about
adding some length and volume
to your locks, give Amber at
Vintage Salon a call. You wont
regret it!
Thanks!!

Williamson Cosmetic Center
offers a variety of skin care
treatments that turn back the
clock by replenishing volume,
improving skin tone and
texture, removing age spots
and relaxing frown lines?
Botox is the most popular
cosmetic treatment, with more
than 6 million Botox treatments
administered each year. Botox is
used to treat forehead lines,
frown lines and crow's feet by
relaxing the underlying muscles.

Injectable wrinkle fillers are

used to treat the lips, cheeks
and facial folds. Wrinkle
fillers can also be used as
"volumizers," plumping and
lifting cheeks, jawlines, and
filling out thin lips.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light):
IPL is a popular spa treatment
that treats broken capillaries and
hyper-pigmentation ("age
spots") caused by age and sun
damage. IPL also stimulates the
production of collagen and
elastin, which plumps up the
skin and evens out skin tones.
Microneedling/Collagen
Induction Therapy (CIT):
CIT is similar to that of
many other non-surgical
skin-tightening procedures.
It aims to create a controlled
injury underneath the skin's
surface, thereby inducing the

body to respond by producing

more collagen in the treated
area. The skin plumps and
thickens in response, reducing
the appearance of scars, pore
size and fine lines.
Customized Facials and
Exfoliation Procedures:
Dermaplaning- a safe and
highly effective physical
exfoliation procedure that
gently " removes the top-most
layer of dead skin along with
fine, vellus hair (aka peach
fuzz). The procedure
can be performed
monthly, in less than
thirty minutes, with
no downtime
post-treatment
Silk peel- a
non-invasive
procedure which
exfoliates and
stimulates skin cell
growth. A silk peel
is used for hydrating
skin, treating acne
and lightening skin.
Micropeel- this
procedure combines
dermaplaning and a
chemical exfoliant. Micropeels
assist the skin to become
smoother, enhance appearance,
improve texture and
discoloration. You will see a
noticeable difference in fine
facial lines.
WCC Signature Facial
includes a careful analysis of
your skin, followed by
cleansing, dermaplaning,
extractions, massage of the
face, neck, shoulder and
dcollet and a customized
treatment mask application and
chemical exfoliation. This
facial can be performed
monthly with no downtime.
Chemical Peels: Chemicals,
such as, betahydroxy acids
(BHA), enzymes and
alphahydroxy acids (AHA) help
to exfoliate the skin to produce
a dewy glow, reduction in fine
lines and improvement of acne.

Deviating

Developing
Your Strategy:
Monitoring and
Evaluating

Now, youre probably wondering

if deviating from your plan is
alright. Honestly, it is perfectly
fine and your strategic plan is a
guideline and not written in
stone.

by Orhan Mc Millan
dezinsINTERACTIVE

Last month, we continued our

article series on developing your
business strategy through
implementation. We explained
that the process of
implementation turns your
strategies into a reality. Simply
put, strategy is nothing without
executing it.
In the final installment of
Developing Your Strategy, we
will focus on the ideas of
monitoring and evaluating your
strategic plan. Although we
mentioned these concepts, we
will discuss them more
specifically.

Once tasks and roles are delegated to individual employees, then

someone has to assigned to both
watch and assess the progress of
the plan. Think of it as a periodic
checking to see how things are
going. For many businesses, these
steps are as vital as complete the
initial strategic plan.

Monitoring and
Evaluating

In the end, monitoring is the

correlation between your written
strategic plan and the day-to-day
operation of your company or
organization. This will prevent
employees from neglecting your
goals and getting caught up in
daily tasks. Your employees
performance will be stimulated
and improved as well.
Whats more is that evaluating
your efforts will serve as an early
warning mechanism. If something
is not working, you have the
opportunity to make changes as
needed.
Truthfully, the frequency of
monitoring and evaluating
depends on the type of
organization and its environment.
Whether it is meeting on a
weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or
quarterly basis, you have to find
the regularity that is right for
your company.

There are tools available to

track strategic priorities, like
Bridgespan, for example. These
types of dashboards show
timelines and results, reinforce
strategies and highlight progress.

Heres a checklist:

Ensure that activities are

kept within the parameters of
strategic goals and objectives.

Guarantee that activities

correlate with the companys
mission, values and overall vision.
Keep note of any external and
internal adjustments that may
need to be made the match
organizations strategy.
If you get off track, determine
why as soon as possible and
make changes.

When you are writing your

strategic plan, you must decide
what systems and structures will
be used to evaluate your
progress. In other words, are you
accomplishing what you
intended? It works as
measurement.
Watching the process closely also
allows for corrective action.
Therefore, you can make vital
adjustments along the way. Its a
means of fine tuning your
strategies and goals.

19

As the years pass by, your

company will probably change
directions several times as
business changes and grows.
These often result from external
needs and wants of clients. In
this case, you have a complete
understanding of why you are
changing from the original plan
and what needs to be done.
Continually revising your plan
is one of the best things you
can do.

Celebrating

Oftentimes, businesses do not

recognize the accomplishments
they have achieved. Strategic
organizers are too focused on
more and more progress.

Remember to celebrate your

small successes. This will only
motivate you and your team to
continue with the plan and
achieve more triumphs.

Ultimately, we hope these ideas

will help you not only monitor
the implementation of your
strategic plan, but also evaluate
its successes and failures.

What is
Periodontal
Disease
By Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Gum disease, or periodontal

disease is a chronic inflammation
and infection of the gums and
surrounding tissue. It is the major
cause of about 70 percent of adult
tooth loss, affecting three out of
four persons at some point in their
life. Periodontal diseases include
gingivitis and periodontitis.

What causes
gum disease?
Bacterial plaque a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on
the teeth is recognized as the
primary cause of gum disease. If
plaque isn't removed each day by
brushing and flossing, it hardens
into a rough, porous substance
called calculus (also known as
tartar).Toxins produced and
released by bacteria in plaque
irritate the gums. These toxins
cause the breakdown of the fibers
that hold the gums tightly to the
teeth, creating periodontal pockets
that fill with even more toxins and
bacteria. As the disease progresses,
pockets extend deeper, and the
bacteria moves down until the

bone that holds the tooth in place

is destroyed. The tooth eventually
will fall out or require extraction.

Are there
other factors?
Yes. Genetics is also a factor, as are
lifestyle choices. A diet low in
nutrients can diminish the body's
ability to fight infection. Smokers
and spit tobacco users have more
irritation to gum tissues than
non-tobacco users, while stress can
also affect the ability to ward off
disease. Diseases that interfere
with the body's immune system,
such as leukemia and AIDS, may
worsen the condition of the gums.
In patients with uncontrolled diabetes, where the body is more
prone to infection, gum disease is
more severe or harder to control.
Pregnant women experience elevated levels of hormones that
cause the gums to react differently
to the bacteria found in plaque,
and in many cases can cause a
condition known as "pregnancy
gingivitis."

What are the

warning signs of
gum disease?
Signs include red, swollen or
tender gums, bleeding while
brushing or flossing, gums that
pull away from teeth, loose or
separating teeth, pus between the

gum and tooth, persistent bad

breath, a change in the way teeth
fit together when the patient bites
and a change in the fit of dentures.
While patients are advised to check
for the warning signs, there might
not be any discomfort until the
disease has spread to a point where
the tooth is unsalvageable. That's
why patients are advised to get
frequent dental exams.

How do you prevent

gum disease?

What does
periodontal
treatment involve?

How can I maintain

treatment at home?

In the early stages of gum disease,

most treatment involves a special
cleaning called scaling and root
planning, which removes plaque
and tartar around the tooth and
smoothing the root surfaces.
Antibiotics or antimicrobials may
be used to supplement the effects
of scaling and root planing. In
most cases of early gum disease,
called gingivitis, scaling and root
planing and proper daily cleaning
achieve a satisfactory result. More
advanced cases may require
surgical treatment, which involves
cutting the gums sometimes
with the assistance of a laser and
removing the hardened plaque
build-up and recontouring the
damaged bone. The procedure is
also designed to smooth root
surfaces and reposition the gum
tissue so it will be easier to keep
clean.

Removing plaque through daily

brushing, flossing and professional
cleaning is the best way to
minimize your risk. Your dentist
can design a personalized
program of home oral care to
meet your needs.

Sticking to a regular oral hygiene

regimen is crucial for patients who
want to sustain the results of
periodontal therapy. Patients
should visit the dentist every three
to four months (or more,
depending on the patient) for spot
scaling and root planing and an
overall exam. In between visits,
they should brush at least twice a
day, floss daily and brush their
tongue. Manual soft nylon bristle
brushes are the most dependable
and least expensive. Electric
brushes are also a good option,
but don't reach any further into
the pocket than manual brushes.
Proxy brushes (small, narrow
brushes) and other interdental
cleaners are the best way to clean
between the recesses in the teeth
and should be used once a day.
Wooden toothpicks and rubber
tips should only be used if
recommended by your dentist.

YOUR ESTATE MATTERS

By Linda Melancon
planning needs.

Another New
Years Resolution:
Organizing Your
Important Documents

Ive written before on how

crucial it is to meet with an estate
planning attorney to plan your
estate before its too late. But
even those who make this a
priority often wind up in
emergency mode in a lawyers
office years later. Clients invest
the time and resources to obtain
these documents to protect their
estate, their family, and their
loved ones, only to lose them or
not be able to provide them
quickly in their time of need.
So here are a few tips on how to
organize and take care of your
estate planning documents.

While I love the holidays and the

time with family that that they
bring, it felt good to walk into
the office on the first Monday in
January with my list of 2016
goals in hand, sit down at a
re-organized desk and work
without interruptions. Theres
something freeing and motivating
about cleaning out the old and
welcoming in the new, and in
honor of January being national
Get Organized Month, I want
to discuss how important that
organization can be to your
and your familys estate

First, know where your original

estate planning documents are.
While I encourage clients to
provide copies of their documents to their agents, executors
and trustees listed in their estate
planning documents, those copies
may not be able to accomplish
the desired result in an hour of
need. In fact, in Louisiana, if the
original will cannot be found at
the time of ones death, it is
presumed that the testator
purposely destroyed it as a means
to revoke it. Make it a new years
habit to verify where your
original documents are located,

that they are accessible in case of

an emergency, and that
responsible friends or family
members also know where they
are and how to access them. If
you cannot locate your original
documents, dont put it off until
later. Call and discuss with your
attorney what options you have
for replacing them.
Another thing to consider in
organizing your estate planning
documents is how you will
protect them so that they are
both accessible and safe in the
event of a natural disaster or
family dispute. I generally
recommend that my clients keep
their documents with other
important papers in a fire-proof
box at home. While a safety
deposit box at your bank may be
a natural conclusion, it often
creates difficulties for family
members after one is deceased.
Without the living owner of the
box, a court representative may
have to be appointed to access
the box and retrieve the contents.
A final reminder regarding the
organization of your estate
planning documents is to keep
them updated. When you check
each year to verify your original
documents location and
accessibility, also check that each
document still protects you or
your familys best interests. Has it
been 3 years or more since you
last updated your will or trust? If

so, you may want to review them

with your attorney. Tax
regulations may have changed, or
perhaps there was a marriage in
the family, a divorce, or the
purchase of a significant piece of
property that needs to be
addressed. Additionally, you
may have had minor children
who have since become adults
and need to designate their
own health and financial
representatives.
Your trips to the gym may wane
by March and the freezer now
stocked with healthy foods may
slowly refill with 5-minute boxed
options. But, a simple visit to the
place where your estate planning
documents are located and a
couple of phone calls with your
appointed agents or attorney is
one New Years resolution that
can provide for your peace of
mind throughout the entire year.
Of course, if you have never
created estate planning
documents to care for your
family and loved ones, make it
your resolution to make an
appointment with an estate
planning attorney today.

Hey Dr. Rob?

Is there a age
limit for hunting
dogs?

Scrapbook
My 7-year old grandson is
fascinated with sharks. He reads
about them. He plays with
shark toys and watches shark
programs on T.V. One of his
dreams in life is to catch a
shark. On one particular
Saturday morning he asked me
about how many sharks have I
caught in my life. I told him
that I had probably caught over
a thousand. The biggest that I
landed was a 125lb hammerhead, although I've been
involved in battles with other
species of sharks that weighed
well over 500lbs. As the conversation continued I promised
Nik that I would take him
shark fishing before long. I
then showed him some pictures
of the sharks that my old buddies and I had caught in the
past.
In 1973 I began putting pictures of every hunting or fishing trip I made into scrapbooks. I now have accumulated
five completely full books of
outdoor memories. The contents of these books have just
about everything that you can
imagine in them that can be
done in the southern outdoors.
Some of the snapshots show
limits of fish, shellfish and game
and some show outings that
were not so productive, but
each and every one of them
brings back precious memories
of the past. A moment captured
forever.
I thumbed through the
pages of the first book I'd created looking for pictures of
sharks here and there while the
young boy oohed and aahed.
When he'd seen enough he
finally walked away turning his
attention to something else like
most kids do. I continued
examining each picture on each
page reminiscing each person

and event as if it had happened

yesterday. It's amazing how
young we were and how full of
energy we were back in those
days with our entire life ahead
of us. Those pictures were all
about smiles but they also projected the faces of many that
are no longer here. In those
first two albums, believe me,
there were quiet a few faces in
that category. I'm blessed to
have their images in my possession forever.
Hardly a day goes by that
someone doesn't come up to
me with one of those camera
phones and show me a picture
of fish or game. That's fine for
now, but forty years down the
road from now what good will
that do when you want to reminisce your son's first squirrel
kill or your grand baby's' first
fish or your daddy's last buck.
Technology is fine, but there's
some things of old that you just
can't replace. A regular old picture photograph is one of those
things in my opinion that keeps
a memory fresh forever.
Hopefully in the near future
I'll have the pleasure to apply a
picture of my grandson, Nik,
with his first shark to the beginning of my sixth scrapbook.
It'll be a moment that I'll be
able to enjoy forever...

Resolutions, Revelations and Revolutions

by Bill Delaune

Happy New Year, everyone,

and say hello to 2016-the
Chinese Year of the Falling
Stock.
I know its difficult saying
good-bye to that wonderful
year 2015 in which peace and
love reigned worldwide or as
my idol Dave Barry so
eloquently put it
After so many years of
sneering judgementalism and
derisive, overheated rhetoric,
we were able to have rational
conversations about issues such
as gun ownership, gay marriage,
race relations and abortion, so
that, as a nation, we finally
began to come together and
Whoa! Sorry! Evidently, I am
high on narcotics
As Shelton would say on
The Big Bang Theory, Wait,
thats sarcasm, isnt it? Yes, it
was, Shelton. In fact the only
two years that even rival 2015
were 1347 when the Plague
wiped out most of humanity
and 33 A.D. when a
riddle-speaking prophet said,
Hey, maybe we ought to treat
the sick and feed the hungry
and maybe be a little nicer to
each other and they nailed
him to a tree.
What a disaster last year
was-war, terrorism and worst
of all, Tom Brady deflating
footballs for a better grip. And
2016 didnt start much better
as I had a whopping total of
zero numbers on my billion
dollar lottery tickets. But the
year is still young and if you can
get a grip on yourselves, Im
about to give you a peak into
whats in store for the
upcoming year

My first resolution to whip

My perfectly good excuse is

10-minute workout, I jog
over to Agave for some tacos,
burritos, tamales and enchiladas
and chase that down with some
top-shelf margarita specials.
For those who are really

Thoughts from Bully

IT WAS MY
TIME TO
GO DAD!
A tribute to the
best dog ever.
This is our family dog Chipper.
Hes been in the family 13 years.
When my son was in high school
he always said he wanted a black
lab. One day a friend called me to
let me know a breeder was getting
rid of the last of 8 puppies for
free. These puppies were $600
dogs but this dog was the runt
and no one wanted him so he was
ours for free if we wanted.
That afternoon I picked my son
up from school and stopped by
the kennel and Michael saw this
lonely puppy by himself behind
the fence. I said, Go get him
hes yours. He put him in the car
and the first thing he did was pee
all over the back seat.
After a few months and some
discipline our new dog Chipper
showed signs of real growth and
real smarts. He took to all the
regular retrieving of sticks and
catching balls . As he got bigger
he soon would perform High 5s
and shaking of hands. The higher
you held your hand up the higher
he would jump and slap his paw
in the middle of your hand.
He was primarily a house dog
with no hunting training but one
day I decided to take him to the
creek to hunt Wood Ducks. He
retrieved 3 on his first time out
and brought all back to me and
placed in my hand. Now, in 13
years of hunting hes never missed
a duck. He once retrieved for 4
hunters 100 yards apart and
would run to the sound of gun
fire and retrieved all the game
from all 4 hunters.

34

That dog lives for going to the

camp but now after 13 years his
retrieving days are over. He old
and gray, limping and has knee
and hip issues. He still has the
heart but not the legs.
Recently he has been going
down hill, struggling with
breathing and asthma. I have to
pick him up to put in my vehicle.
Last week he knew I was going
to the camp and laid in the yard
watching me pack. I couldnt
leave him behind. I made sure he
did all his business before we took
the 4 hour ride so he wouldnt
have bathroom issues.
As we travel he gets excited at
every turn and the closer we got
to the camp the more excited he
would get. This started breathing
seizers. Once we arrived at out
gate he was laid out laboring to
breath. I felt so sorry for him I
pulled over to pet and calm him
down. I talked to him. It wasnt
working. He couldnt stand and I
started to tear up and told him it
was OK to go on to the happy
hunting grounds. He struggled to
stand and lost control of his
water. Barely breathing I got back
in the vehicle to get down the dirt
road to the camp site. Once there
I opened the door to pick up his
broken limp body and placed him
on the ground. I was a mess.
Immediately and ran 5 steps only
to squat and relieve himself and
took a good poop. After that he
walked over wagging his tail and
found a pile of leaves to roll in.
He rolled around scratched his
back on the ground and smiled at
me.
Ive been so worried about the
day when its his time to pass on I
forgot that he was just being a
good dog and not breaking the
rules by messing up my car.
I laugh about it now. I can only
imagine what he was thinking as I
was boohooing over him.
Probably something like, Would
you quit that and get me out of
this car. I GOT TO GO DAD.
Get in the car and get me to the
camp you big DUMMIE.
On the way home from that
trip I picked him up and let him
out on the side of the road
several times.
Chipper is still with us today
and Ill do better remembering
hes just like me, OLD.
Next trip I think Ill give
him a few more potty
breaks. Probably will do
me some good also.

Feed the Needy

Annual Fundraiser
Raises & Donates Over
$30,000 to Families
In December 2006, Uncle Perry and
Aunt Susan Aldridge casually mentioned to
BAMA that there were three needy
families in the Gonzales area who were in
danger of going without the necessities
for Christmas.
That was all it took for the idea of Feed
the Needy to be born in the big heart of
the CEO, Thomas BAMA Aldridge.
It was a humble beginning that year as
BAMA asked Sheriff Wiley if he would
sponsor a pot of food to use as a fund

recognition. These folks come back each

year because it becomes more evident that
there are many people right here in our
community that are down on their luck
and really need our assistance and

appreciate the help we are able to provide.

One of the most satisfying elements to
this years benefit was the fact that we sold
every serving of Jambalaya cooked. The
community really stepped up to the plate.
It is heart warming to know we live in a
community that cares about its citizens.
The funds raised were distributed to:
LOCAL CHURCH FOOD BANKS - $9500
SPECIAL CHARITIES - $1500
NEEDY CHILDREN / LOCAL SCHOOLS - $7200
BATTERED WOMANS SHELTER - $2000
LOCAL NEEDY FAMILIES - $7200
raiser in order to try to help these
families. The Sheriff obliged and BAMA
and his Sous Chef, Bones Sheets cooked
a hen and andouille sauce piquante which
was sold for the regular Saturday lunch at
Gonzales Country Club. The process raised
$800.00 and in turn, those three families
had an unexpectedly great Christmas.
Since those early days the Feed the
Needy has raised money to help our local
citizens in need for the Holidays. This year
the organization raised in Cash and Checks
the amount of $29,210.00. There were
25 cases of frozen food was delivered to
the Battered Womans Shelter.
None of this would be possible without
the sacrifices and contributions of our many
generous donors. We had our usual great
team of volunteers who want no
