ABSTRACT
The problem statement of our project summarizes our objectives which
were creating a retail packaging for a Ukrainian egg. The packaging is for the
Stoney World Gifts Company. It must be able to withstand drops and the
rough handling in shipping. The package must transport and display only one
egg. We must create a cost effective package that is also small in size. We
accomplished through a compact design and created it with a laser cutter.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this activity was to create a cost effective and easily
manufactured package for a Ukrainian Egg that that will safely transport and
display the egg. In this activity we examine current methods of handling products
during shipping, disassemble existing packages, test paper, cardboards, and
other materials for strength, and examine the history of packaging. After we
complete all of these tasks, we then create a design and prototype for our
packaging design. We have to consider the use of raw materials, productions
safety and graphics.
In this activity we learn about how to work together as a team, and how to
divide tasks among ourselves. It was a challenge for the leader of the group,
because it was hard to keep everything on track. There were a lot of different
tasks to do within the project, and it was easy to lose sight of the main purpose
which was creating a prototype.

BACKGROUND
Include the information and background research of the topic. Inform the
reader about the information you gathered in order to accomplish the
task. Describe what you found and studied of previous research and designs
done by others. Explain why your work is different.
Shipping Background Research
What is Bulk Mail? Is it Right for You?
The term "bulk mail" refers to larger quantities of mail prepared for mailing at
reduced postage. In Business Mail 101, the term "bulk mail" means
commercial First-Class Mail and advertising mail (called "Standard Mail" by
the Postal Service). Commercial prices are available for other classes of mail,
too. The Postal Service uses the terms "bulk" and "presorted"
interchangeably.
Bulk prices are lower than "single-piece" prices. "Single-piece" means that
you pay the full postage price; when you put a stamp on a letter, you're paying
the single-piece postage. Many mailers pay single-piece postage even though
they are doing large mailings. Why? Because they dont want to do any extra
preparation workthey dont have the time, or its just not cost effective for
their business. Business Mail 101 will help you make smart choices about
your own mail to determine if commercial prices are right for you. 1
If You Are Shipping Something 2 Lbs Or Heavier With A 5 Day Delivery
Window
FedEx Ground or UPS Ground will almost always be cheaper than USPS
Priority Mail. Between FedEx and UPS, FedEx will be cheaper than UPS out
of the box because they provide you with an instant 15% off all shipments just
for creating an online account(Note: The level of discount will vary but theres
always a discount program).
Update: As of 2015, both UPS and FedEx are now charging for what is called
dimensional weight. Basically what this means is that if your package is
large or oversized, then the shipping charges will be drastically increased. 2

The shipping research we found was one of the tasks we had to complete
during our 6 week time period. This was able to give us insight on how to
create a compact package that could easily fit hundreds onto a pallet
when being shipped.

Packaging Background Research

Packaging originated as cloth bags, wooden boxes, or crates

The 1900s is when cardboard and paper became popular

Industrial Revolution = packaging important for marketing

Packaging highly influences the customers decision to buy the product 3

Evolution of packages

This showed us how packaging originated, and was also a required task.
We could tell how important it is to have a noticable and original package
to get the customers attention.

Urkainian Egg Research

A Ukrainian egg is a hollow egg decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk
designs using a wax-resist method. The word pysanka (What these eggs are
called) comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as the designs are not painted
on, but written with beeswax.5

We needed to know what the product was that we were shipping. Without
the research, we would have just assumed that it was an egg you eat and
refrigerate.

MATERIALS
To complete this activity we need:

Cardboard this is for the prototype itself

Bubble wrap this went inside of our package to keep the egg safe
during transport

Packaging paper this paper provided a stylish exterior to our design

and kept it safe from the elements

Tape tape was used to keep our original design together

Hollowed egg this was what we used to actually test the durability of
our box

Air bags at one point in the design process we used air bags to keep
the egg snug, and it worked.

Glue used to enclose our final design

Computer how we were able to research the packaging background,

materials and what a Ukrainian egg even was.

Laser cutter used to cut out our final prototype

auto cad we were able to design our package die line using auto cad,
and from there we used the laser cutter

Ruler useful to dimension the project

Paper - we cut out our first test of the prototype on paper to see if it would
work

PROCEDURE
Step One
Our first step was to familiarize ourselves with the Pysanky egg. We researched
how it was made and what the purpose of it was. With our research we have
found out that the eggs contents are drained out and then the design of the egg
is layered with beeswax to protect the design. The Pysanky is a traditional
decoration hand-made in the Ukraine for Easter.

Step Two
Now with more knowledge on the product that is being transported, we can start
on our design sketches. We knew that our packaging had to be cost-efficient,
reusable, and had to display the egg. Our initial designs were not going to be the

10

greatest packaging idea, but with minor improvements and working as a group,
we moved forward to make a better packaging idea.
Step Three
We have researched the materials that we can use. Our best bet was cardboard
because of how strong and cheap it was. Cardboard is also easy to cut into so
we can make a display for the egg. To keep the packaging closed we will tape
the folds shut together. This was the first step into creating our final design.
Step Four
When we had narrowed down our materials that we are going to use, we started
to research the costs to make sure that they were cost-efficient. Our materials for
product testing did not cost us anything because we had plenty of materials at
our disposal. However if we were to mass produce the product it would not cost
the manufacturers a fortune.
Step Five
Once we have calculated the costs and factors of production, we have created
our final design. We stuck with our box design but cut out a square to display it
and taped plastic film over it to protect the egg. We had taped the top folds of the
package to keep it from opening and keep the contents of the box concealed.

11

RESULTS
The objectives were accomplished as a team and we had plenty of effort
put in. To improve this project I would suggest some more specific details about
how the egg will be transported, the conditions that will be faced, and what the
budget is that the engineers should not go over. This will provide more of a
challenge and push the groups to be more creative. One problem that my group
had was that we were not very creative; however we did keep the design simple
and focused more on the functionality and not the looks of the packaging. In the
future this project can push the limits and perspectives of potential engineers by
forcing them to think outside of the box and create another way to solve a
problem. Our results compared to our initial stated purpose were that our box
succeeded to be cost-efficient, simple, and portable.

12

CONCLUSION
We learned the requirements and time needed in creating a package
and shipping a certain product. It's not as simple as putting it in a box and
shipping it. There are multiple constraints you need to acknowledge such as
weight, durability, size, and even health and safety regulations. The activity was
about going through the steps and processes that an engineer would face in the
real world and to give us some experience of what we might face if we continue
down this career path.
There was extensive research that had to go along with the design and
prototype. There were also multiple testing phases that could have caused
setbacks, but with them, we knew how to change our design according to the
results.
