New Beginning
The weather is gradually changing to rainy season. The leaves start turn to green.
Tonhorm is standing on the balcony on the second floor putting her hands in the pocket of the
jacket, watching a glowing ember leaped in the barrel with a porky smoke smell. Suddenly, the
barbecue fire grill spread across her mind. The fire takes her back to the other day last month, the
day that her dad died. All of her memories come back automatically.
It was a good day, in May 2007. The sparrows were twittering in a garden under the
sunlight. The warm wind was blowing, and warm sun was shining above. It was such a special
day for her dad and she just wanted to bake cookies for him.
Wow! Look at my little girl. Would you like some help?
No, thanks, Tonhorm quickly put the tray into the oven. Just wait for another half an
hour, I will serve you at your seat, Tonhorm said.
Be careful dont forget to turn off the oven before you leave, okay?
Yes, sir.
Oh, by the way smell good huh?
Soon she didn't set the time to turn off the machine and she left the kitchen to watch the
television with her dad. The clock said it was twelve oclock already. There was a big smoke
came into the living room.
Oh gosh! I forgot to turn the oven off, she shouted.

Tonhorm quickly ran into the kitchen that was already on fire which spread out all around
in every unit space of the kitchen. She quickly went straight forward to the sink and open the trap
to let full of water stream ran out. The fire looked like not going to stop easily. After a second,
the ceiling starts to fall down slowly.
It shouldnt be like this. It shouldnt be like this, she kept repeating this sentence over
and over again. Everything around her became red and orange.
Tonhorm! Tonhorm!! Are you there? someone shouted my name at the outside.
Immm m in here in the kitchen, she tried to shout out loud.
She choked so hard with the smell that came out from the burning stuff around her. She
was crying and hope for someone to come in and took her out from the kitchen.
Help help kakak.. help me, her voice went softer and softer.
The door to the kitchen was opened. I heard the sound of steps came closer to me and tap
on my shoulder.
Tonhorm Tonhorm! Are you okay? it was her dad.
Lets get out of here, it was silent and everything went dark.
There still had some people ran around. Dad ran into the home again to get his paper out
from the fire that went harder and harder. The fire burnt over the house and became out of
control. It burnt all the wood very fast. Finally, all the construction broke down.
Noooo!! Nam, Tonhorms mom, fell standing. He still in there. He didnt come out
yet! she screamed like crazy.
As the fire hustled her away, her eyelids being tightly shut. A single hot tear run out of
her eyes. It was all my fault, she keep whispering.

Nam holds the doorknob watches her little daughter stands still at the balcony. Knockknock, Tonhorm turns back slowly with the tear on her face and watches the one who come in.
Oh mommy mommy, it was all my fault, her mood goes dip again.
With the kindhearted, the feeling safe and comfortable like in a perfect dream that mom
gives her, He rests in peace now. Dont worry, Nam softly rubs Tonhorms hair.
Sorry mommy, she lets out a breath full of relief. Im sorry.
Are you hungry? mom asked. Today, I have B.B.Q for dinner. Lets go down and eat.
They walk through a doorway into the kitchen. There are a long black cabinet, a sink and
a stove is placed against the cream wall in the left hand side of the kitchen. A knife holder and a
microwave are laid next to each other on the counter at the opposite side of the room. A big
rectangular wood table placed at the middle of the room surround with four chairs. Barbecue is
already on the table. Nam and Tonhorm sit at the opposite side of the table.
Here, this one is for you, Nam picks up one of the barbecue that has no pineapple on
the stick to Tonhorm.
Thanks, mom, she looks at that pork stick and bite at the side of it. Umm! The taste is
so good. Delicious!
Really! Nam picks up another stick. Let me try some. How was your first day of
school?
Well, its was fine, I dont know, she shrugs her shoulder up. But I would like to go
back to my old school.
Why what happen? Nam asked.

Everything is different, since we move here. I miss home. I miss Chiang-mai. I miss my
friends. I wanna go home, she starts sobbing again. New school. New friends. Nobody likes
me. They dont talk to me. They said that I scared them.
Oh sweetie. You know what, I miss Chiangmai too. I miss the backyard that we used to
play, Nam grabs her hand. Come here. Tell me how your day was going.
Its was a tough first day in the middle school in Bangkok. In the late morning, I quickly
walked to the first period class. I stopped at the front door and saw through a little window on the
door. Inside, everyone was sitting in a pair within 4 rows. With nervousness on one hand and fear
on the other, I reached the door knob, opened it slowly and walked into the class. Everyones
eyes were on me as I entered the room.
You might be the new student form Chiang-mai right? A gentle voice started talking to
me.
With a soft voice I answer, Yes.
His voice comforted me a little more. He gave me a sheet of paper called syllabus. When
I first saw this piece of paper, I just wonder that what the syllabus was. My old school didnt
have this kind of thing before. Then he asked me to choose the seat. I walked to the back of the
class and sit closest to the back door instead of the corner where all of the boys were sitting. I
didnt actually pick a seat because there were only two seats that were available.
As the bell rang, I accidentally put my left hand on the table to pack up my things.
Some of them saw my hand and started giggling, some of them express a look-downed face, and
some of them just rushed out of the room to attain the next class. I was continuing pack my stuffs
with only one hand and tried to avoid everyones eyes. At this point, my confidence was on a

downhill roll. I havent looked up to anyone that still in the class, even I wanted to make friends
with them. It was hard to muster up my courage.
After third period class, it was lunch time. I walked down the hall way like an ant that
walked in the desert, with not thing but sand surrounding them. Seeing lot of friends in groups
were chatting and laughing together, it reminded me all the good old days when my friends and I
used to hang out in every weekend. With the full of feeling, my eyes was flush with tear again. I
quickly wiped it away before I entered the cafeteria so that others wouldnt think that I was
weak.
Rice and chicken curry, please? I ordered my lunch. I hoped my voice was loud enough
for the cook to hear what I just ordered.
Thirty-five baht, said the cook. He gave me a dish which full of rice and curry.
Where should I sit? I whisper asked myself while looking for a seat.
I sit alone at the corner, looking out the window saw the grumpy cloud form up to be a
bigger one. When will this day end? I murmured. I turned my head back on the plate and
started eating lunch with my beauty hand.
Hey! Do you mind if I sit here? Nine asked.
I looked around before asked him back, Did you just talk to me?
Yeah! If I didnt talk to you so whom am I talking with? Or do you think Im taking with
a ghost or a bird? There is no one here, Nine said.
I nodded my head, Sure, you can.
Im Nine. Whats your name?
Im Tonhorm.

I havent seen you before. Did you just move to this school?
Yes, Im just moved from Chiang-mai.
Wow! So, how long have you been in Bangkok?
One month.
Since you just came here, I will tell you something, but you have to promise me that you
wont gonna tell someone else, okay, his tone lowered a little bit.
I nodded my head again, I promise.
This school has magic, his face came closer to me. Its all in the air. Did you feel it?
I listened to him carefully and started looking around and tried to touch something in the
air, Are you seriously? Is that true?
Nope, its not true, he laughed. The bell is gonna ring soon. See you. Bye!
Tonhorm feels better after finished telling the story to her mom. She collects all the
empty plates on the table into the sink and starts to clean it up.
The school is not that bad. Maybe, I might need some times to adapt to this new
society, Tonhorm said. You know what mommy, Nine is the only friend that didnt pick up the
scar on my hand, she smiled.
