In what way does

your media product use,
develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real
media products?

Conventions found in a
mystery thriller
Mystery is something that is difficult or even impossible
to understand or explain which can be included as a
sub genre in a film involving an exciting mysterious
plot. When doing re search on mystery thriller we found
some typical conventions which are listed below:
Dark lighting- Usually low key lighting is used to
obstruct his/hers face from the audiences view.
High and low angles- to either show a potential
murder victim as vulnerable and weak or to show the
killer as strong and in control.
Close ups- to built tension and for the audience
to get attached to the characters
Isolated areas- to create suspense and so the
audience knows something is wrong.

Using forms and

conventions of real media
products
Throughout our production we have developed certain
conventions to make our opening sequence more effective.
We have used high and low angles when Serena is exploring
the room and have tired to exaggerate the transitions to
make the camera angles more visible.
Dark lighting has when used when there was a
panning of the stalker room to make the audience feel
uncomfortable and uneasy as they dont know what is
going on.
Close ups of the characters expressions and certain
match on action scenes to show the characters
reactions.
We decided to use a bedroom as it can be considered
a private area. The location is unknown and can be
considered an Isolated area.

Developing forms and

conventions of real media
products

We have developed certain conventions to build

on the suspense.
We exaggerated high and low camera angles to
disorientate the audience which creates tensions
and a scary atmosphere.
When filming we developed the convention of
dark lighting by using small and weak sources of
lighting and filming when dark.
Close ups of the characters all throughout the
production.
We also did outside filming when the area was
quite so there was no background noise and made
it look like an isolated area.

Challenging forms and

conventions of real media
products

We feel that the production has challenged the

typical stalker story lines as the character that is
the stalker is a female. The opening sequence
uses typical conventions and most scenes are
expected except the stalker is a female. If we
were able to do the opening sequence again we
would like to challenge the forms and conventions
more and include plot twists to make it more
exciting and intense.
