cians and connoisseurs their greatest

reputation does not rest on this fact.

*> Fine musical instruments are not
pieces of merchandise, but works of
art. Their value depends not on cost of material and
labor, but on individual qualities and characteristics
cunningly wrought into them by a master hand, to be
called out again by the master artist. Such instruments
cannot be bought by lot and sold by number like ordinary merchandise: they must be individually selected
by experts and just as carefully sold again-each to perfectly meet the particular requirements of its particular
new owner.

C Lyon and Healy early and clearly recognized these

select only those instruments whose individual merit
would rank them at the top of their class, and to sell
only on a basis that would assure permanent satisfaction
to every customer.

4 Such a policy necessitates the constant exercise of

great technical judgment along all musical

of experts that has made this name famous in high
musical circles the world over.

lines. To

41 This policy, and the careful, consistent way in which

it is followed out, has led many of the leading musicians
and connoisseurs, both in this country and abroad, to rely
entirely on this judgment in the choice and purchase
of some of the world's greatest musical masterpieces.
For years it has also proved invaluable to thousands of
customers everywhere in selecting for them the best
instrument procurable to meet their needs and means.

4 And what is true of all branches of our

business is
particularly true of our Old Violin Department. The
violin is so inseparably linked with all that is greatest in
the history of music-its design and construction were
brought to such a marvelous point of perfection by the
mastermakers of Cremona and their followers in France
and Germany, who seem to have caught the very soul
of music in the very form of art-that it stands today
without a peer in the hearts of the great body of music
lovers.

41 The importance of a really fine old instrument, not

only'for the professional musician, but for the student,

cannot be overestimated. Artistic expression, light and
shade, beauty and tone color are the very essence of real
violin music; yet the average modern instrument is incapable of expressing them.

41 In speaking of this subject, Mr. Theodore Thomas, the

late great conductor of the Thomas Orchestra, wrote us:
I am convinced that the prime reason for lack qf artistic
e*ression among violinists is the want Qf a good in#trument
in early LUe, one which might have awakened a sense qf tone
quality instead Qf noise. In placing suck ,#ne instruments
within the reach Qfkmerican musicians your undertaking should
meet the appreciation and encouragement which it deserves.

41 Our Catalog de Luxe, illustrating and describing our choicest violins, ranging in price from one
thousand dollars, upward, will be sent to those considering the purchase of a masterpiece of this class.

Rare Old Violins

Gasparo da Salo, Brescia, about 1580
This celebrated master was the discoverer and inventor of the violin. The first

violin which is known to have been made was

by him and appeared about the year 1540. The
instrument here referred to, No. 1859, is a large,

quality of tone of the Brescian violin is deeper
and more somber than that of the Cremona.
For the playing of Bach, for home use or for
church music nothing can be richer than the tone
of a fine old Brescian violin. This instrument
has a back of beautiful close-grain Italian maple,
which, while old, is not the work of (la Salo.
T'he sides match the back. It is essentially a
violin for a professional and concert player, as it
has all the attributes desired by performers in
public The tone is extremely even anti respon-

sive in all positions. The lower strings are

especially deep and noble ; the upper strings
brilliant and flexible.

rich ruby red.

Gabrielli was one of the great makers
of Florence, and his violins are esteemed for their
sweet tone and careful workmanship. He made
two classes of instruments, one a very high model
and another much broader and flatter, which are
regarded as his best. This is a specimen of the
latter type. The pattern is broad and large.
The back is formed of one piece of very handsome curly maple, the figure of which extends
slightly downward from left to right. The sides
are of the same maple and the front is of spruce
of the choicest quality. The scroll is original,

designate it correctly. It is an ideal instrument
for a lady, or any one having a short arm and
a small hand.

Repairing
4 The restoration of fine old violins is one of the very
fine arts. Many can make good new violins, but few
have the necessary experience for the proper repair of
valuable old instruments.

41 This is a branch by itself, separate and distinct. It

is safe to say that more valuable Cremonas have been
butchered and ruined by unskilful treatment at the hands
of so-called repairers than by any other agency, including
loss by fire and accident.
< We maintain a corps of repairers than which there is
none superior in Paris, Berlin or London. It is to the
hands of such artists only that we can entrust our own
valuable instruments, not to speak of those sent us by
our clients.

IL We have for many years been very extensive buyers

of old violins. These are purchased, for the most part,
in an unrepaired condition, and require complete rebuilding before being offered for sale. This applies to the
finest old masterpiece of Cremona, worth in the thousands,
as well as to that of old Saxony, wl*h would be sold for
fifty dollars.
< The most valuable specimens in America have passed
through our shop. The list includes some of the most
celebrated violins in existence. This has given us an
experience which has its effect on the work we do, and
we can truthfully say, without boasting, that nowhere
else in America can similar results be obtained.

l we furnish free estimates of the cost of repairing

rioting sent in for that purpose.

expense are returned, or a letter setting

forth the condition is sent to the owner.

REPAIRING

77

C There are many good old instruments lying idle in

garrets and closets which, in their present condition, are
worth very little, because they cannot be played. For

the lack of proper regulation they are, for all practical

purposes, worthless. With properly adjusted bar, blocks,
linings, neck, fingerboard, strings, etc., they immediately
have a musical and commercial value often away beyond
the idea of their owners. They then become valuable to
66
a violinist who knows." They then have power, evenness and brilliancy, and they respond to the bow readily
and satisfactorily. The violin which previously was an
inanimate object has become, through the skill of the
repairer, possessed of life and song-a joy to those who
know how to bring forth its manifold possibilities.

< Violins which have been broken in accidents, sometimes literally reduced almost to splinters, often are
restorable. If not too far gone, they may be so repaired
as to retain their tone. It often happens that they are
better than ever, which, however, is not due to the fact
of their having been ibroken in splinters, but to the
skill of the repairer who is able to procure such results.
Obviously, if he had had the same violin to adjust before
it was broken, it would have turned out very much
better still.

Estimating Cost of Repairs

C If a violin be a very old one, and

has never been

artistically repaired, it will probably require a complete
going-over. This, as a rule, includes the following: A
new neck grafted * the old head, regraduation of top
and back, new bass-bar, new linings, blocks, regluing of
all cracks, lingerboard, bridge, tailpiece, strings, etc.
Often corners and edges have to be replaced, soundholes rebuilt and varnish retouched; so that the expense

may be anywhere from $25 up.

IL It also

depends somewhat on the quality of the violin,

for, obviously, the care and responsibility of restoring a
fine Cremona is far greater than where an ordinarily
good old violin is concerned.

IL The better the violin the better must be the

adjust-

ment to get commensurate results.

AB

78

REPA IRING

4 Where only a new bar and minor adjustments are

necessary the expense entailed for repairs and adjustment is from $15 up. If the first bar is not satisfactory
in its results, we put in another at our own expense
until it is right. Obviously there is a great difference in
bass-bars. You may pay some one $5 to put in your

violin a bar which does it no good whatever, but instead

much harm. It is not a question of the bar being ne,0,
but of its being right.

All Our Work is Fully Guaranteed

4 This also applies to the tone of old Italian violins which
have been sold through this department in the past five
years, which, if they have become deficient in tone, indieating that their bars are too light or otherwise faulty,
will be repaired free of charge for the bar, post, etc. ;
charges being made only for such other adjustments as
may be found necessary.

Our Selling Terms

Q All prices in this catalog are net. When our customers so desire we sell violins of the value of $25.00
and upward on monthly payments. Our prices are the
same, cash or time. The only difference is that when a
purchase is made on the instalment plan we charge a
nominal interest of six per cent on the deferred payments, which really amounts to about three and one-half
per cent on the whole amount, and only covers our
extra expense in carrying the transaction.

Instruments on Trial
responsible persons in any part of the United
States we will send two or three violins on a week's
trial. From this we except Stradivarius, Guarnerius, and
a few of the other more valuable instruments, for which

special arrangements must be made.

Selecting and Exchanging Violins

Il We exercise the most conscientious care and discretion in selecting instruments for our customers. If the
matter is left entirely in our hands we will do our best,
and our expert will give his personal attention to making
the best possible choice. At the same time we wish the
purchaser's own judgment to be the determining factor
in the final choice. If for any reason he should become
dissatisfied with an old violin bought from us, we will
exchange it for another at the same price, any time
within one year. It costs nothing except transportation
charges to make an exchange. We wish every customer
our fault. We
have an ample stock and will gladly exchange in order
to give satisfaction.

price paid for it. All he has to do is to pay the dill'erence in price and the transportation charges.

Terms of Payment
4 Our easy-payment plan enables one to purchase a
genuine fine old violin with a small initial outlay. We
like to get about twenty per cent cash, but have no set
rule. If our customer thinks he can pay for a violin in
or about two years, with perhaps a smaller cash payment
and a corresponding increase in the amount of the
monthly instalments, we invite him to write us, freely
stating what he can do, and we will endeavor to arrange
the matter to meet his wishes as nearly as we consistently can.

particular class and for which there is
not a constant demand. No attempt
has been made to grade or classify the

used largely for reference by musicians
who are sufficiently familiar with composers and their works to select from
such a list without further assistance.
