Procedure
In this activity you will investigate the history of civil engineering and
architecture. You will see differences between the two professions and learn
of their beginnings.
1. Define civil engineering.
The design and construction of public works, such as bridges, dams, and other
large facilities.
2. Define architecture.
Art and science of designing buildings for human habitation.

CEA Unit 1 Lesson 1.1 Activity 1.1.1 History Civil Engineering and Architecture Page 1
Materials were chosen based on availability and climate. This called Vernacular
Architecture.
5. Give two examples of vernacular architecture.
Post-and-lintel.
9. What problem in architecture led to this form of construction?
How can door and window openings be provided in bearing walls without sacrificing
support????????
10. Explain how an arch is created.
Blocks are placed in a curved formation in such a way that they give each other
support. The keystone is at the crown of the arch and serves to lock the others in
place.
11. How is the vault used in civil engineering?
Hallways, sewers, churches.

Greeks had 2 wheel ruts and had a width of 8-9 feet and a depth of 3-4 inches.
Romans used large blocks of stone for the base, over which broken stone or
debris was spread and covered by a layer of sand and finally by large basalt
blocks.
16. Describe an ancient Roman bridge.
It was made of wood and was constructed using columns and beams.
17. How did building materials and methods change after the Romans?
They were able to use simple cranes, pulley systems, and cast iron became more
readily available. Cast iron and metals were previously too expensive.
Conclusion
1. Give an example of a modern pyramid not shown in the presentation. How
does its function differ from that of the Egyptian pyramids? What do you
think accounts for this difference?

The louvre pyramid is purely AESTHETIC and its probably because we have more
advanced architecture now but we have an appreciation for old architecture so
they made this in front of the most popular art museums.
2. Give an example of a modern structure that uses an arch and dome system.
The top of the capitol building.
3. What is the main purpose of modern roads? How is the cost of modern
roadways defrayed?
The main purpose of modern roads is for transportation and they are much easier
to build but probably more expensive. They are made from asphalt and are laid
down by machines instead of people doing it by hand.
