Abstract

Ethiopia is among the least developed countries on the globe

with access to electricity being very small. Even if the country
is well known to have natural resources supposed to be used
for electrification, it is suffering with shortage of electricity
with a total access to electricity not exceeding 16% (in 2007).
Especially in the rural part of the country where about 85% of
the population is living, access to electricity is less than 2%.
Therefore, for the betterment of the living standard of the
people and also to wisely use the resources that the country
had, it is better to utilize the renewable energy resources the
country possesses.

In this project design of solar powered street lighting
system for five selected sites inside the university will
done.
Data important for this study such as the solar
resource and load data are collected from
meteorological sites like NASA and directly from the
university both by measurement and through
interview.
The result of this study shows that solar street
lighting is a promising solution to the university.

Conti
The main purposes of this is to determine the
technical possibilities and benefits of using Solar
Energy through the combination of photovoltaic
cells to power streetlights in Adigrat unv.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Adigrat Unv. is one of the Universitys in Ethiopia

which conducts various researches to solve community
based problems.
The university established in 2004 E.C and is located
Northern region of Ethiopia
The number of students and buildings in the campus is
growing. Therefore, it is obvious to have proportional
resources increment as campus expands in terms of
territory and student numbers .

Conti
One of these very essential services is solar pv street
lighting system b/se of independent of EEPCO i.e off
grid system.
