TEACHING SKILL TARGET:

Classroom Management
Concerns: I am a little worried about classroom management. This is mostly what
I have been difficulty establishing in the past few weeks, so I hope to find new
strategies. In order to facilitate the teaching for my lesson I will give clear
instructions of my expectations for the lesson and following activity, as well as
setting up ground rules in order to make sure all students are behaving and
taking the lesson seriously because it is a very important topic especially in
school because it is happening more than we think.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES:
Competency 1: To act as a professional inheritor, critic and interpreter of
knowledge or culture when teaching students.
-I will guide students into a class discussion where they will express and make
connections to their own personal experiences or something they have seen or
heard to participate and understand the importance of bullying. Students will
construct their viewpoint by listening to other students and participating in the
discussion.
Competency 6: To plan, organize and supervise a class in such a way as to
promote students learning and social development.
-Using a lesson plan is a good way to organize and to be on task while teaching.
I will make instructions and expectations clear from the beginning so that
students will stay focused and understand the importance of the topic covered.
Students will share their own experiences and give examples through a class
discussion. I will guide the students to stay on topic and to explain what is
accepted or not. This will also explain school and class rules and behavior
issues.
Competency 8: To integrate information and communications technologies(ICT)
in the preparation and delivery teaching/learning activities and for instructional
management and professional development purposes.
-During my lesson, I will be showing a small video using the song true colors by a
young boy rapping and a young girl singing. I liked this video because the
children in it are around the same age as the class and that they can listen to the
lyrics and relate to it.

Competency 12: To demonstrate ethical and responsible professional behavior in

the performance of his or her duties.
-Students will be involved in a discussion on ethics and religious culture about
bullying. It is important to teach and speak about this subject because it is
something that is very common on school grounds and is very serious. Students
need to be aware of the consequences of their actions and that bullying is not
tolerated. I will model and give examples from my experience to engage with the
students during the discussion and activity.
SUBJECT COMPETENCIES:
Moral Education
Competency 2: To take an enlightened position on situations involving a moral
issue.
-Students will take positions and reflect on different viewpoints in a bullying
situation by analysing the consequences that come along with being a bully and
a victim by putting themselves in the shoes of a bully or a victim. They will explain
why they think a person is a bully and how they would feel if they were a victim.
Competency 3: To engage in moral dialogue
-Students will be actively participating in a classroom discussion on the different
types of bullying that can be done by giving examples and the consequences and
feelings that come along with being a bully or a victim.
CROSS-CURRICULAR COMPETENCIES:
Competency 3: To exercise critical judgment
-Students will express their perspective and feelings on a bullying situation by
comparing and listening to the their classmates opinions and coming to a
common viewpoint as a classroom.
Competency 4: To use creativity
-Students will participate in an art activity. They will be given paper cut hearts and
will write a word that hurt their feelings as well as colour the heart up. They will
then crumble it up and try to flatten it out.
Competency 6: To use information and communication technologies (ICT)
-Students will watch a small video on a children about their age singing and
rapping to the famous song True colors by Cyndi Lauper. A small discussion will
then follow the watching of the video.
Comptency 7: To construct his/her identity
-Students will construct their values and opinions by listening to the discussions
and make the difference between right and wrong in a bullying situation by
evaluating their actions and observations on school grounds.

TIME

LESSON
INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

25
DISCUSSION:
minutes -Start a discussion on bullying.
*Make it clear to the students that we will only be discussing bullying
happening on school grounds.
Also make it clear that there will be no laughing at other students
tolerated during discussion and that if they are to say mean words that we
will change it up so that they will be more acceptable to be used.
-Tell the students that if they want to share or say something they are to
raise their hand up or else they will not be listened to.
-Ask the students: What is bullying?
Definition: Bullying is anything that can cause emotional, physical,
psychological harm to someone. It can be done through many forms
causing someone to feel in danger or upset.
-Come up with a good definition of bullying as a class and then
continue the discussion on what different kinds of bullying exist.
-Ask the students: What are the different types of bullying?
Let the students share experiences and observations they have noticed in
the hallways, classes or in the schoolyard.
-Come up with a few kinds: verbal, emotional, physical and media, body
language.
(if the students say bad words for example lead them to explaining that it
is verbal bullying)
-If the students give personal examples or experiences ask them how
they felt when this occurred.

3
minutes

-If they are sharing what they have seen ask them what the victim could
have done to solve the situation or how they think that student being
bullied felt. Also ask the students why they think the bully did this and
what they think he or she felt.
VIDEO:
-Show a small youtube video the students.

TIME

LESSON
-The video is about a little boy rapping on a modified version of the
famous song True colors by Cyndi Lauper along with another girl
singing the original chorus.
-This video enables students who are visual to be engaged in the topic
and also for the ones who are auditive to listen to the lyrics and the
meaning of the song. In the video it shows a girl that has down syndrome
that doesnt have any friends as well as a black girl. In the end they play
and have lots of fun together, Even the other girls at the school end up
playing along with them.
-This video explains that although we are all different we still have a lot of
similarities by putting all of our differences aside and appreciating the
good in every person and respect them for who they are.

-Start the video (it lasts 3minutes19seconds)

minutes
SMALL DISCUSSION
-When the video is over start a small classroom discussion

25
minutes

-Ask the students some of these questions:

What did you like about the video?
What didnt you like about the video?
What did you observe in the video?
Why do you think talking about bullying is important?
Do you remember any of the lyrics?
What stuck out to you the most?
Can you make any connections about your life to the video?
ACTIVITY
-Ask the students to share some of the hurtful words they have heard or
been said to them on school grounds.
-List these words on the board (about 10 words: depending on the
number of words that the students are saying)
-Using this list of words explain to the students that we will be doing an
activity.
-Give instructions about the activity.
-Make your own to model the activity to the students and show them an

TIME

LESSON
example so that they understand what it should look like.
(Model the activity as you explain it: have your word and coloring already
done but show them how to crumble it up and flatten it out)
-Have 27 paper cut shaped hearts
-Explain to the students that they will each have a paper heart.
-Explain that on this heart they are asked to write one of the words that
hurt their feelings. In order to facilitate the activity. Ask them to choose
one of the words listed on the board.
Once they have chosen a word, ask them to write it on their paper heart.
-Explain to them that they will be given some time to color and decorate
their hearts like they want to.
-Once they are finished or the time is up. They will be asked to crumble
their hearts up and try to flatten it out.
-Explain to them that the goal of the activity is to understand that words
hurt and that although we say sorry the emotions that the bullying victim
feels stays and these words are marked in our hearts for a long time.
Even though you try to flatten the heart out it still is a little crumbled. Once
you hurt someone, you cannot go back.
-Now hand out the paper hearts, each student gets one, and let them
start.
-If most students are finished before time, ask a few of them if they want
to share it with the class.
