Memo Leen Eimers (1652000) Sports

The lessons given in the sports theme are all CLIL because they teach the
students something about a different subject than just English. The main
topic of our curriculum is pop culture around the world which would be a
fitting subject for social studies. Social studies is a course every student
needs to take at some point in their school career. In my lesson on
hooligans I let them have a debate. Having a debate is something which
you could come across in real life. According to the article on HUBL about
CLIL language has to be seen in real-life situations in which students can
acquire the language. This makes them learn the language naturally which
builds on other forms of learning. (Content and Language Integrated
Learning)
The penta-pie is visible in my lesson about the Olympic games. First I give
them a task they need to do at home which could be considered as
strategisch handelen. (Penta pie lesson) After this I show them a clip and
give them questions which serve as guidance during the clip. This is both
the input of content and the processing of content. After this I have given
them a text which is also input and some questions that process the form.
They will practice with the form by filling them in gaps in a text. This tests
whether they understand the form within a context. Finally, they have to
make their own Olympic games as output. This uses both the form and
content within the exercise. By doing this last part, all the 5 stages of the
penta-pie are included within this lesson.
My lessons also make use of flipping the classroom. In all my lessons the
students do a warm-up activity at home. This allows for the teacher to
have more room within his or her lesson to focus on the actual content.
According to Knewton flipping the classroom gives teachers more time to
help students, which is exactly what my lesson gives them. (Flipped
Classroom) All my lessons live up to this principle. I have chosen not to
make the work at home too difficult for the students. This is because I
dont want the students to get frustrated with all the work they have to do
at home. Almost all of the tasks that I make them do at home are based on
their own opinion or requires little work from the students. Basically its
just a way to get them introduced to the subject and save some time for in
the actual lesson.
In all my lessons the students work towards some form of task, which
means that task based learning is present within my lessons. By making
the students work towards a project or task you motivate the students to
use their skills at their current level. (TBL Methodology - What is Task
Based Learning?) If you take the lesson about baseball and basketball as
an example. They practice with a certain grammar which they have to use
to write the letter that is the final exercise of the lesson. This means that
they have already, without necessarily noticing, practiced for the final
exercise. My other lessons also all have a certain task to which the lesson

builds up to. In these final exercises they have to be able to use either the
vocabulary or grammar that has been taught to them throughout the
lesson.
