LEES SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL

MUSIC PARENTS SCHOLARSHIP


One (1) $1,000 first-year college scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating
senior at Lees Summit High School. The recipient will be chosen from among
eligible applicants, in accordance with the following procedures:

ELIGIBILITY: Any student who satisfies all of the following criteria shall be
eligible to apply for this scholarship.
1.

The applicant must be a senior planning to attend an accredited


college or university to obtain a bachelors or equivalent degree in
music, requiring a minimum of four years of higher education.

2.

The applicant must hold a 3.0 accumulated GPA after seven


semesters.

3.

The applicant must have completed at least two (2) years of music
courses, with at least one year of music courses completed during the
senior year in symphonic band, symphony orchestra, and/or concert
choir.

4.

The applicant has submitted a completed application form with


required letters of recommendation; a copy of the students transcript
shall be attached to the application by the guidance office.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection will be based on two phases.


Phase One will consist of selecting the top three applicants (no more than
3) based upon the Criteria Evaluation scores. If there are three (3) or
fewer eligible applicants, Phase One may be omitted, proceeding to Phase
Two.
Phase Two will consist of an interview and musical audition conducted by a
3 panel Selection Committee, and will determine who, of the three finalists,
will receive the scholarship.
When the committee has completed Phase One, the Chairperson will contact
the three finalists.
The following factors will be considered by the Application Committee in
choosing the students to participate in the Interview Evaluation and audition:

20% Community Service: consideration will be given to time


devoted to community service over and above applicable minimum
requirements, as well as service of exceptional nature.

and offices held. Effort should be made to learn the extent of the
applicants active participation in activities.

20% Essay: 75 to 150 words to describe why they want to receive


this scholarship, the course of study/ major field of interest,
proposed occupation or profession, and abilities not mentioned on
application form.

10% Staff Recommendations: a letter from a LSHS, non-music staff


member is required.

20% Music Staff Recommendations: will be submitted directly to


the Music Parent Scholarship coordinator.

6.

10% Personal Recommendations: at least one letter from a person


not affiliated with LSHS, not to include family members.

CERTAIN CRITERIA TO BE DISREGARDED: The following will not be


taken into account by the Selection Committee:
1.

sex, race, religion, or any other classification

2.

standardized test scores

3.

family income

4.

siblings in college

APPLICATION COMMITTEE: The five (5) member Application Committee


for narrowing the field of applicants to no more than three (3) will be
comprised of a Music Parent board member, a Music Staff representative,
a Lees Summit Education Foundation representative, and two (2) people
from outside the Music Parents Organization.
INTERVIEW / AUDITION SELECTION COMMITTEE: A three (3) member
panel of judges will be determined for the purpose of interviewing the 3
finalists and assessing their musical audition. All interview/audition
committee appointments must be approved by the Music Parents
Executive Board. To be considered eligible to serve on the committee, no
prospective member may have a relative (blood or through marriage),
employee, or employees child competing for the scholarship.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Finalist candidates will be assessed by the
three (3) member Interview/Audition Committee.
Upon completion of all auditions and interviews, the Selection Committee
shall convene for the purpose of choosing the Scholarship Award
winner and notify the Music Parent's Scholarship Coordinator of their
decision.

SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENT: The money will be disbursed by the Lees


Summit Education Foundation in the form of a check made payable to the
scholarship recipient and the college or university designated by the
recipient. The check will be sent to the scholarship recipient, who is then
responsible for forwarding it to the college or university. The scholarship
will be dispersed in increments of $500.00 for the fall semester and
$500.00 for the spring semester (after proof of eligibility is submitted). If
the recipient fails to complete either semester, the scholarship will be
revoked. The recipient will be responsible for refunding any unused portion
of the scholarship with documentation accounting for the balance.

PLEASE NOTE:
The recipient must submit the completed Acceptance Agreement and official college
or university documentation of enrollment in music study to the Lees Summit
Education Foundation on or before September 1 of the year following their high
school graduation. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the entire $1,000.00
scholarship.
The recipient must earn a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale during the first semester
in order to be eligible to receive the second disbursement.
The recipient must submit, to the Lees Summit Education Foundation, official college
or university documentation of first semester grades on or before January 31 of the
year following their high school graduation. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of
the $500 spring semester portion of the scholarship.
The recipient must advise the Lees Summit Education Foundation, in writing, of any
changes in schools or academic major.
The intent of this scholarship is to pay expenses as designated and outlined by the
college. The scholarship will first cover tuition, fees, and books. After these
expenses have been covered, the scholarship may be used for room and board.
The Interview/Audition Committee will choose an undisclosed runner up. This
applicant's name will be given to the Music Parent's Scholarship Coordinator to be
used in the event the original recipient declines or forfeits the entire Scholarship.
