Imagine having all your land being taken under your feet. The land that once belonged to
you is now under new rule. Where the rules for you arent good and you are basically a slave to
the society. What was the cause of all this? This all happened and started in the year of 1870
and onward till 1900. Europe decided to imperialize the continent of Africa. Each country owned
a part of a country or even region depending on how much was granted. But what was the
driving force behind this expansion? The driving force behind the European imperialism in
Africa was power and being hungry for it because Europe wanted to own a whole continent,
have an influence on the Africans, and the more resources the more power.
To begin with, the driving force behind the European imperialism in Africa was
wanting to own a continent. In Document A, you can see in the map that Europe owns
basically the whole African continent. Theres only a few independent states that are free of
European ruling. Some countries barely owned any land. For example, Spain. Most of the
European countries were involved in this, claimed a part of Africa. But by also showing that most
of Africa is ruled by Europe means they could extend their borders of authority. At one point,
England owned the most land in the world. Land meant more power as well because they
had more control of everything now that they had sovereignty. If you had more land you
had more people to rule over which meant more power and this is why the driving force
was being power hungry.
Secondly, the Europeans wanted to have an influence on the people of Africa. This
passage shows that the British was going to have a significant influence on the Nigerian people
and by doing that, they could put down laws, language, and government throughout the land:
After their arrival in Africa in 1539, the British had an enormous influence on the diverse group of
Africans living in the area now known as Nigeria. For hundreds of years, British missionaries, merchants,
and soldiers interacted with the Nigerians, along the Atlantic coast line, bringing them Christianity, British
education, and the English language. Also in [Doc B], an excerpt from a colonial leader Freidrich

Fabri, he states that the German influence should learn the colonial skills of the and they were
going to take over. By being able to obtain the colonial skills, they can connect more to the
land they have and from that angle, theyd be able to manipulate more by having full
control over them.
Last but not least, the more resources the more power. Throughout the whole
continent, all the countries collected resources for their own needs. By doing that they could
make cosmetics, drugs, jewelry, and different metals were some of many valuables which
contributed to the industrial or economic use.(Doc D). Also, while in the process of all this
collecting and transporting of resources, the Europeans did this without the Africans consent.
They took and didnt give back and when they did, they barely gave anything (Doc E). By being
able to do this shows power because they can go over Africas head and do what they
want without the natives say in anything. With the advantage of a surplus of resources,
Europe was also able to make weapons and basically anything with what they had. This
boosts them up in the hierarchy of the countries in the world that have the most control
and power.

In conclusion, the driving force behind European imperialism in Africa was power hungry
because they wanted to own a continent, have an influence on the people, and the more
resources the more power. By being capable of all these things, it shows that they had power
already and by accomplishing these ones, their authority could be broadened. By also creating
an influence on the Africans, they can takeover the Africans lifestyle and whole life system.
Africa was basically a gold mine that Europe got to first. They used what they had to their
advantage of making more inventions and useful products. But why did Europe decide to
imperialise Africa instead of another continent or country?
