School Library Media Program Evaluation

Last week, we evaluated the operation of the media center. We used the GA DOE 2015
Media Program Evaluation Rubric to guide this evaluation. During the evaluation, the media
center was rated proficient or exemplary in all of the target indicators and categories except
one area, which was rated basic. In Category 5 Administrative Support, we rated the area of
The local system superintendent shall appoint a system media contact person (SMCP) to
serve as a liaison to the department as basic. Currently, the school system does not have an
appointed SMCP. There are only two media specialists in the system and they communicate
with each other and the DOE, but neither has actually been given the title of SMCP. In order to
move to a proficient rating in this area, we believe a SMCP needs to be appointed for the
school system. The SMCP will then be responsible for the communications with the DOE,
GALILEO, and other entities involved in the media center. The SCMP would then be
responsible for sharing this information with the other media specialists and administration.
In Category 1 Student Achievement and Instruction, we rated the area of Student
achievement is routinely assessed as proficient. We believe we can improve this rating by
having more formal meetings with teachers to discuss exactly what will be done to assess
student achievement. Currently, the media specialist creates her own rubric for assessing
student achievement based on an informal conversation or email communications with the
teacher. In the future, the media specialist plans to schedule a face-to-face planning meeting
with the teacher so they can discuss in depth how student achievement will be assessed.
We have attached the completed rubric for your review. Please let us know if you have any
questions or concerns. Thank you!
