Intransitive*Verb*Case*#1
Linking*Verbs*
In*both*#1*and*#2,*the*verb*you*circled*is*a*
linking*verb.**It*doesnt*show*any*action,*and*it*
joins*the*subject*with*the*other*words*in*the*
predicate.**The*words*in*the*predicate*tell*
something*more*about*the*subject*by*either*
renaming*it*or*describing*it.**Since*there*is*no*
action*in*this*sentence,*there*is*no*receiver*of*
the*action.**Linking*verbs*are*ALWAYS*
intransitive.*

About*the*Complements*
In*#1*&*#2,*the*words*left*are*dierent.**In*the*rst*
example,*I*have*a*teacher*left.**Teacher*is*
renaming*WHAT*Mrs.*Lockwood*is.*In*#2,*I*have*
short*left.**It*is*an*adjective*that*describes*the*
subject.**
*A*noun*in*the*predicate*that*renames*the*subject*is*a*predicate*noun*
(or*a*predicate*nominative.)*Often*labeled*as*PN.*
*An*adjective*in*the*predicate*that*describes*the*subject*is*a*predicate*
adjective.**These*are*the*complements*you*will*nd*in*an*intransitive*
sentence*with*a*linking*verb.*Often*labeled*as*PA.*

with*Direct*Objects*
In*#3,*the*verb*you*circled*is*an*action*verb.**It*
may*or*may*not*have*words*after*it.**Action*
verbs*can*be*transitive*or*intransitive.**They*

Direct*Objects*are*another*type*of*
