Word 1: Microaggression

Definition: A Microaggression is a negative message used in everyday conversationintentionally or

unintentionally causing hurt feelings, alienation, or insult to a member of a marginalized group.

Question 1. Which of these statements would be experienced as a casual conversation Microaggression?

(Please click one answer.)

a.) How did you ever learn to speak English?

b.) I believe the most qualified person should get the job.
c.) I dont see color.
d.) All answers.

Correct answer is: d.) All answers.

Feedback: All answers are reported to be heard frequently by members of marginalized groups, including

Asian and Black students. All of these statements strongly promote the viewpoint of the racial group with the
most social power, while invalidating the continual experiences of those who experience bias.
Including statements like this in conversation is considered aggressive because the other party feels pressured
to remain silent or risks escalation and being labeled the problem if they are open about the offensiveness.

(Please click one answer.)
a.) Wearing a swastika tattoo.
b.) Moving from your seat on a subway to avoid a person of color.
c.) Answers a & b are correct.
d.) Hitting someone lightly on the face.

Correct answer is: c.) Answers a & b are correct.

Feedback: Swastikas are a symbol of Nazi attempted genocide of Jews in World War II

and wearing the symbol of a violent regime expresses sympathy and agreement with that
agenda.
Moving seat on a subway to avoid a person of color is likely to be perceived as a racial
rejection. On the surface it is not violent, yet the action is noticeable. Broadcasting
rejection openly communicates barely restrained ill will, as if more action would be taken
in a social setting supporting it.
Hitting someone lightly or hard is regular assault, not micro.

Feedback: Invalidations assume stereotypical roles that devalue marginalized groups. It

assumes that if someone is not wealthy or esteemed that they put forth less effort in a non-
existent level playing field, which they do not experience. (This is often intentional and put forth
as an ideology or philosophy that shields privileged
dd. groups from guilt over injustice.)
Invalidations also frequently occur with members of marginalized groups who achieve greatly
in society, and are dismissed as being incapable somehow of what they have actually done!
(This is often unintentionally committed as an assumption or reflex based upon habit, individual
beliefs, and social history.)

because the receiver is being judged on a chosen appearance with societal meanings, in
addition to judgment based on skin color. The same assumption about a black man

Definition: A m ajority-privilege position of power leveraged against a m inority to oppress, dominate, or otherwise limit access. (May be

Question 6. Which of these examples would be experienced as racism?

a.) A conversation including the w ords You people
b.) A dating history including only those w ith a similar racial background.
c.) A colleague sends an email describing someone as a good B lack scientist.
d.) Answers a. and c. are correct

Correct answer is: d.) Answers a. and c. are correct.

Feedback: Referring to a person solely as a representative of a group stereotype is
offensive to that person. This perspective strips away individual identity, preferences
and choices, categorizing negatively instead.
Dating is a personal preference that requires no justification. Compassionate and
conscientious people are not expected to date politically, or to choose dates in order
to prove diversity acceptance.
Referring to someone as a good Black scientist or Female scientist creates an
unnecessary, demeaning sub-category that diminishes the persons accomplishments
as a full scientist without further description required. I f context supported these
descriptors it would be in situations such as spokesperson for League of Black
Scientists where the descriptor is intentional and key.
