Becoming a CPM Catalyst

Introduction
A Church Planting Movement can only be accomplished by someone who has the proper mindset
as well as skills necessary to lead a team of missional-minded individuals to proclaim the Gospel to
as many people as possible in the shortest possible time for the glory of God and multiplication of
churches among a people group and beyond. This is only possible through the Holy Spirit and the
Gospel. Only God can make this happen.
17

Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God. 18 I will not venture to speak of anything

except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have
said and done 19 by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So
from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ. 20 It has
always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be
building on someone elses foundation. 21 Rather, as it is written:
Those who were not told about him will see,
and those who have not heard will understand.
Romans 15:17-21
The Importance of Teamwork in CPM
9

Two are better than one,

because they have a good return for their labor:
10
If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

A team is two or more individuals

A team is composed of individuals who are willing to work together
A team has a common, mutually agreed-upon goal
A team is committed to fulfill that goal
A team creates their own mutually agreed-upon criteria of performance and success

Creating a team and asking for teamwork are two different things. They are related but they are not
the same. A team must learn to practice teamwork, but people who are practicing teamwork may
not necessarily be a team. Doing the work of a team as a team is a discipline.
A group of individuals can become a team by pursuing the discipline of thinking and acting like a
team, which means
They Avoid the Five Dysfunctions of a Team1
1. Absence of Trust ........................................................ The leader must start first!
2. Fear of Conflict ........................................................... The leader must expose hidden conflicts!
3. Lack of Commitment .................................................. The leader must force clarity and closure!
4. Avoidance of Accountability ...................................... The leader must confront difficult issues!
5. Inattention to Results ................................................ The leader must focus on outcomes!

They Aim to become a High Performance Team2

1. People have solid and deep trust in each other and in the team's purpose -- they feel free to
express feelings and ideas.
2. Everybody is working toward the same goals.
3. Team members are clear on how to work together and how to accomplish tasks.

1 This was coined by Patrick Lencioni

2 Developed by Carl Wiese (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carl-wiese/10-characteristics-of-hig_b_1536155.html)

4. Everyone understands both team and individual performance goals and knows what is
expected.
5. Team members actively diffuse tension and friction in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
6. The team engages in extensive discussion, and everyone gets a chance to contribute -- even the
introverts.
7. Disagreement is viewed as a good thing and conflicts are managed. Criticism is constructive and
is oriented toward problem solving and removing obstacles.
8. The team makes decisions when there is natural agreement -- in the cases where agreement is
elusive, a decision is made by the team lead or executive sponsor, after which little secondguessing occurs.
9. Each team member carries his or her own weight and respects the team processes and other
members.
10. The leadership of the team shifts from time to time, as appropriate, to drive results. No
individual members are more important than the team.

Such a team needs a leader who is a catalyst!

Profile of a CPM Leader as a Catalyst
1. Credible in the eyes of team members.

3. Takes responsibility as a leader.
4. Acts with wisdom and common sense.
