CBM Assignment Part 1

Name: Casey Gressmen

Date: 9/29/15
Student Name: Virginia Baxter
Student School: Eastland Middle School
Student Grade Level: 8th Grade
Skill to be monitored: Oral Reading Fluency
Rational for monitoring this skill: I chose to progress monitor oral
reading fluency for this student because she is below grade level in reading
and struggles to obtain general education content because it takes her so
long to read the material. This CBM will progress monitor her ability to read
fluently, which will effect her comprehension and decoding speed.
Name of assessment used: DIBELS Next
Survey Level Assessment
Grade level of assessments started with: 3rd Grade Passages
Reason for choosing this grade level: The students current
SRI Lexile score was 400 which puts her at a 2nd grade level. She has
been able to access higher reading in her recent class and we decided
to start with a 3rd grade level and work our way down if necessary.
Grade levels assessed:
Passage 1: 99 cwpm, 5 errors
Passage 2: 75 cwpm, 9 errors
Passage 3: 95 cwpm, 4 errors
Median score: 95 cwpm, 4 errors
Goal:

Monitoring level: 3rd Grade

Choose realistic or ambitious growth rate: Ambitious
Rational for choosing growth rate: I chose the ambitious growth
rate, because the student has shown motivation and high amounts of
growth during the summer. Although at the end of the 9 weeks she will
not be on grade level, she is about 5 grade levels behind and needs to
make quick process to excel in the general education curriculum.
Growth Rate: 1.5 words per week
Number of weeks to monitor: 9 weeks
Goal: 108.5 or 109 words
Written goal: By November 30th, 2015, Virginia will read 109 correct
words per minute, with fewer than 2 errors per minute, on 3rd grade
oral reading fluency progress monitoring probes.

Summary of Survey Level Assessment and Goal Setting

The student was taken from her 8th grade special education reading
class to do this assessment. She seemed more anxious than usual and

originally thought that she was in trouble. After she found out that she
wasnt in trouble she started to relax, but was hard on herself for not
getting words correctly. No other problems were noted. Virginia left off
the endings of her words frequently, especially when the word was
plural or ended in an ed.
Virginia is an 8th grade student at Eastland Middle School in a special
education reading classroom. She can read 95 words per minute with 4
errors when given a reading CBM on a 3rd grade level and timed for 1
minute. An student in the 8th grade would be expected to read 150-180
words per minute with 6 errors or fewer on a grade level CBM and
timed for 1 minute. Virginia will increase by 1.5 words each week,
reading 109 words at the end of 9 weeks with 2 errors or fewer.
