Soil Profiling
Background:
Soil Profile is defined as a vertical section of the soil that is exposed by a soil pit. A soil
pit is a hole dug from the surface of the soil to the underlying bedrock. Most developed soil have
horizons that can tell us the type of environment the soil is produced. The horizons include O, A,
E, B and C horizons. The O horizon is usually the uppermost horizon. Dead plants and animal
parts falling on the surface of the soil are present on this horizon. A horizon is the first mineral
horizon. It is often referred to as topsoil and is rich in organic matter. E horizon follows after A
horizon. It is said to be very leached and weathered by organic acids and water. Depending on
the material, it appears to be white. B horizons is where chemical products of accumulate. It is
often referred to as subsoil. C horizon is also the parent material. It is deep in the profile and has
been weathered.
