Art Day
at the Market
a Success!

Submitted by Brighton Schools, Photos by BHS student Ian Stroszeck

The Art Day at the Market event in September turned the Brighton High
School lawn into a community art studio. Students, faculty and community
members all worked on different forms of visual art.
The event was part of the Arts at the Market series, sponsored by Friends of
the Arts in Brighton (FAB), and hosted by the Brighton Farmers Market. The
idea was to celebrate visual art, and inspire and engage people of all ages.
Previous events celebrated music and dance.
Most of us get to see art only after a piece is completed, said FAB
coordinator Claire McLauchlin. Art Day offered a rare and exciting chance
to view the artists process of creation.
The art started early in the week with the BHS Knitting Club decorating
trees with fiber art installations. The project was led by club founder Beatriz
Barraclough-Tan and local watercolor, knitting, and felting artist Betsy Liano.
On Sunday, artists used paint, pastels, clay, sand, yarn, and other mediums.
Ten student artists worked alongside community artists Bob Geroux, Bill
Stephens, Dick Kane, Dan LePorte, Katie Jo Suddaby, and BHS teacher
Katie Maley.
FAB so appreciates the professional artists and BHS students who
were brave enough to bring their work from the studio to the outdoors,
McLauchlin said. It was wonderful to see the students interacting with the
professionals, and to watch people of all ages getting up close, chatting with
the artists, and being transfixed as pieces took form.
Hands-on activities allowed community members of all ages and skill levels
to dive in and express themselves. This included: A drop-in knitting circle;
decorating market bags donated by the Town of Brighton; paint stamping
using fruits and vegetables; tape bracelets; chalk drawing; and larger-thanlife coloring book pages on the BHS steps. One of the more unique projects
was turning Maleys minivan into a mobile mural with Sharpie markers.
It was wonderful to see all of the local artists interacting with our BHS art
students as well as community members of all ages from pre-school
children working on giant coloring books to the knitting circle gathered in
the front lawn, said Dr. Michael Liener, Brighton Central School Districts
Director of Innovative Student Learning. Kudos to the FAB organizers for
creating this opportunity for the entire community to come together and
celebrate the arts on such a beautiful fall day.
Friends of the Arts in Brighton (FAB) believes in the value of arts education,
and supports and champions the arts in Brighton schools. Membership
is open to any interested Brighton parents, alumni, students, faculty, or
community members. For more information, visit Friends of the Arts in
