Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
I am able to demonstrate competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position by relating ideas and
information within and across content areas. The target comprehension skill in Lesson 18 of our Journeys curriculum is
identifying text and graphic features. These artifacts are examples of student work of the activity. Students used Time
for Kids magazines to cut and glue text and graphic features. I related ideas from current events including social studies
and science into our reading block.
Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better)
The students absolutely loved this hands-on activity during our whole group reading block. Students were using many
different Time for Kids magazines to find these different features. Many students referred back to our text and graphic
posters to confirm a specific feature. They were motivated to find the different features and glue them on to their paper.
During the activity many students were reading the articles, examining the graphs and chart, and finding new vocabulary
terms. It was a great activity across content areas. After the activity, I was able to grade their assignment to see if they
were able to locate and label correct text and graphic features. All but two students missed the skilled by only getting
50%. I was able to reteach them in a small group. For the other students it was an activity for them to remember and
recall during other assignments throughout the week.
