(P) Perform at least 2 successful serves consecutively using either overhand
or underhand motion during game play. [Skill was taught lesson prior and will
be reviewed today] (National # S1.H1.L1 ; MA CF # 2.17; Task/Activity # 2)

(A) Appropriately communicate with teammates when actively pursuing the
volleyball during game play. (National # S4.H3.L1, S4.H5.L1 ; MA CF # 2.26;
Task/Activity # 1, 2)
Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will:

1. Ensure 100% on-task behavior by utilizing stop/start signals effectively and

eliminating potential off-task behaviors.
2. Explain the game play rules/regulations/expectations in a clear and concise
manner by using demonstrations during instruction and checking for
understanding prior to gameplay.
3. Keep 100% of students engaged and challenged during game play by
adjusting rules (e.g. extensions up for a winning team) or matchups when
appropriate.

Special Considerations:
Equipment: Students need to use equipment only for their intended purpose
of exercise. Use only hands during game play.
Safety: Students have their heads up and are aware of other teammates and
the ball at all times.

SEQUENCE OF LESSON

ORGANIZATION

Students will change and take attendance

T
Warm up activity - As students enter the
gym, the teachers invite them to get with
their teammates (groups of 2-3) and play
pepper (bump/set back and forth) while
everyone arrives

Greeting - T greets students and presents

the days focus (Communication /
Tournament rules). S review the
underhand and overhand serve. Also, T
asks the students
When should we communicate on the
volleyball court (calling to play the ball,
when rotating, after a good effort by a
teammate)
What are the two main rules for
tournament play? (Points can only be
scored when team is serving, Up to 9
players can be on the court at the same

T goes over some other rules for

tournament play and explains the team

Transition - S go to a court with their

partner and stand across the net on
opposite baselines.

Activity #1 - Team Warm up

7-10
min

S will go to a half court with their team

and warm up using bumps and sets. Each
team has 2 volleyballs to warm up with
(more if they are available). T encourage
communication during the warm up to get
S used to talking during game play.

Teacher Positioning: T has back to wall and

scans the room. The two Ts make sure to
stay apart and focus on separate groups
while both roaming the area.
Safety - Students have their heads up and
are aware of other teammates practicing

near them at all times.

Feedback: T roams station to station
giving specific/positive feedback. T also
give general feedback when appropriate

1011
min

Transition - S gather into the middle of the

gym and put the volleyballs away. T goes
over the 2 types of serves and when to
use either one.

Activity 2 - Game play

1132
min

S get into their teams and find a court. T

give each court a ball and have them start
a game. T emphasizes proper rotation
and communication. S are invited to
communicate with teammates during and
after points. Game is timed for 6
minutes. After 6 minutes, the teams
rotate based on whether they were
winning or losing.
Assessment - Each team will have a note
card. The card is placed out of bounds
near the net on the front right part of the
court. The teams tally their wins and
losses on the card and carry it from court
to court. 1 team member is in charge of
the card.
Extension Up/Down: Up - 3 hits before
advancing ball over the net. Only back
line can spike. Down - Take 1 step in when
serving.
Teacher Positioning: T has back to wall and
scans the room. Ts watch separate
games to ensure maximum feedback.
Feedback: T gives global feedback
regarding communication and rotations. T
gives specific feedback regarding serving
technique and game play strategies when

appropriate.

min
Transition - S will put volleyball away and
gather at the meeting place.
3335
min

Closure - Ts go over the objectives: The

importance of communication, game play
rotations, and tournament play rules
Someone tell me a rule they needed to
use in game play? (Points can only be
scored when team is serving, Up to 9
players can be on the court at the same
time, ball must be hit at least 2 times
before going over the net)
When and how do you rotate as a team?
(Rotate when your team wins on the other
teams serve; rotate clockwise)
When should we communicate on the
volleyball court (calling to play the ball,
when rotating, after a good effort by a
teammate).
How can we apply volleyball
communication to how we communicate in
our daily lives?

Volleyball Rules for P.E. Tournament

1.

Always the say the score before serving your score then the opponents score.

2.

Points may only be scored when you are serving

3.

The server must be behind the line and may use an overhand or underhand

serve. The ball may NOT hit anything on the serve. The ball MAY hit the net during
play.
4.

Any obstacle over the court is out of bounds. If the ball hits the standards holding

the net it is out of play.

5.

If the ball lands on any part of the boundary line it is in.

6.

The ball must be hit a minimum of 2 times and may be hit up to three (3) times by

one team before going over the net. We encourage BUMP-SET. One person may NOT
hit the ball twice in a row but may it again if someone else has hit it in between. The
ball MAY be played out of bounds as long as it passes over the net between the poles. If
two (2) people hit the ball at the exact same time it counts as one hit and wither play
MAY play it again on the next hit. Any player involved in a block may it again as the
first of that teams three (3) hits allowed (A block is not considered a hit!).
7.

NO player is allowed to touch the net at any time. No player may cross the center

line under the net at any time.

8.

Using any part of the body ABOVE AND INCLUDING THE WAIST is considered a

legal hit. NO KICKING the ball!

9.

Any team that is NOT rotating properly will forfeit the game.

10.

If the ball is touched before it hits the ground it is in play.

11.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the YMCA in Holyoke,

Mass.
12.

There are six (6) people on a legal volleyball team. In our tournament, a

maximum of nine players are allowed on the court at one time. Any team with more
than nine players should rotate substitute players as part of the rotation.
13.

Teams rotate in a Z-pattern

14.

Games end on the whistle. Any point currently being played when the whistle

blows is null and void. The game reverts back to the score of the game when that point
was being served.
15.

In the event of a tie, the captains will rock/paper/scissor for serve. Each team gets

one chance to win the game on their serve. If a game reaches a third sudden-victory
serve, whoever wins that point wins the game.
