Her contribution to the arts community is
leven more incalculable when you consider
the creations made by the students she's
helped become artists through Access Arts
since the 1970s.
Powell has devoted her life to running

teaching program devoted to making art
accessible to everyone, including disabled
or low-income individuals
Architect Hurst John started the
program, originally called School of Service,
37 years ago. Powells father, a carpenter
‘and John’s close friend, helped inspire
and develop the program. Powell began
teaching students shortly after the school's
inception, eventually becoming its director.
"1 think everyone needs expression, and
artis one kind of expression available for
‘most people,” Powell said.
In March, Missouri First Lady Melanie
Blunt gave Powell The Fist Lady Award for
service to the art world, At that time, Marie
Nau Hunter, manager of the citys cultural
affairs office, described Powell as “the
‘most deeply committed arts professional
and arts enthusiast around,”
