INTRODUCTION
Health professionals are in a world where
individuals are finding themselves looking at a
vast variety of vitamins, herbs, and nutritional
supplements in order to improve their overall
body, health and well-being. One among that
vast variety of options is nutritional
supplements. Nutritional supplements have
proven to be a trustworthy healthy solution to
individual seeking to giving their body, health,
and well-being a boost when added exercise and
healthy eating habits are practiced.

HISTORY

Ancient cultures understood the principle that


a life force within the foods of nature could
maintain human health and even restore it.
Our understanding of this principle took a
quantum leap forward in 1747, when a Scottish
naval surgeon, James Lind, discovered that an
unknown substance in lemons, limes and
several other fruits and vegetables prevented
scurvy, which was a serious problem for sailors
of that period. This nutrient would eventually
become identified as vitamin C.

Also there are always new studies that are

for different reasons.
Although FDA has oversight of the dietary
supplement industry, it is the supplement
manufacturers and distributors that are
responsible for making sure their products are
safe before theyre marketed. Manufacturers
are required to produce dietary supplements
that meet minimum quality standards, do not
contain contaminants or impurities, and are
accurately labeled.

Dietatry suppliments are not always the best


option.
Certain dietary supplements can change
absorption, metabolism, or excretion of a
medication and therefore affect its potency.
You may be getting either too much or too
little of a medication you need.

How does a dietary supplement differ from


conventional food?
A dietary supplement is meant to supplement
the diet by increasing the total dietary intake
of a substance. A food additive is any substance
that is either intentionally added to food to
improve its shelf-life, texture, nutrition, or
other aspect of quality, or that unintentionally
contaminates food, such as packaging materials
or machine residues. Dietary ingredients in
supplements are exempt from the food additive
regulations applicable to conventional foods.
