The problems must be solved neatly with a good hand writing. Clumsy work will not be
entertained and more over they will be lowly graded. The analytical reasoning must be clear and
it will be beneficial for you if you point out all the assumptions clearly. The solved answers must
be returned two weeks after the date of getting the problem set.
1. Find the locus of z such that |z − a||z + a| = a2 where a > 0. Draw the curve roughly and
indicate the coordinates of some representative points on the Argand plane.
2. Find the n roots of unity and plot them on the Argand plane. What does the pattern
resemble?
3. Show that the function u = 2x(1−y) is harmonic. Find the function v such that f (z) = u+iv
is analytic.
4. Determine the analyticity of the function f (z) = |z|2 .
5. For each of the functions locate and determine the type of singularities in the finite z plane,
q
b) ln(z+2i)
2
a) z2z+2z+2
−3z
, z2
, c)sin−1 ( z1 ), d) z(z 2 + 1), cos z
e) (z+i) 3.

6. For each of the functions locate and determine the type of singularities throughout the z
plane (containing points at infinity),
2
a) zz+3
2 −1 , b) csc( z12 ), c) (zz3/2
+1)
.
7. Show that
Z ∞ 1
x e−x sin x dx = .

8. Find the value of
I

C z3
where C is the unit circle.
9. Show that c e−2z dz is independent of the path C joining the points 1 − πi to 2 + 3πi.
R

Determine the value of the integral when the path of integration starts from 1 − πi and ends
at 2 + 3πi.
