Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?

MAFS.4.MD.1.3 - Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical
problems.
MAFS.4.NBT.2.4 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the

standard algorithm.
Essential Understanding

Solve for area and perimeter with unknown measurements.

Objectives- What are you

teaching?

Given a series of word problems, and practice sheets the students will be able to solve for
area and perimeter using various strategies that they have learned with minimum errors.

Rationale

Students will be taking FSA next month, required skill to pass standardized test.

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have
mastered your objectives?

Formative:
Performance task, anecdotal notes, questioning, student work.
Summative:
Unit test

Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed
a substitute to carry out the
lesson for you.)

Time

Where applicable, be sure to

address the following:
What Higher Order Thinking
(H.O.T.) questions will you
ask?
How will materials be
distributed?
Who will work together in
groups and how will you
determine the grouping?
How will students transition
between activities?
What will you as the
teacher do?
What will the students do?
What student data will be
collected during each
phase?
What are other adults in
the room doing? How are
they supporting students
learning?
What model of co-teaching
are you using?

Students:

Review do now (similar to bell work, except teacher typically reviews the
information with the students and address student questions)
Have students volunteer to solve question, once students have completed their
problems review with the rest of the class.
Teacher will turn to page 509 in GoMath workbook, place questions under the elmo.
Teacher will provide each group 1 whiteboard, marker, and paper towel.
Each student will get a chance to solve for perimeter and area for 1 question. Prior to
engaging student in activities teacher should review goal, address questions and
remind the students that this months character trait is friendship. Therefore they need
to respect their teammates. The students will share out how they found their answer
and go through it step by step.
Each student will get a chance to explain his/her own work. Give table points to
students that were able to correctly answer questions (they are allowed to receive
assistance from table mates)
The students normally work individual, in small groups and in a
whole group throughout math.
Once each student has been given the opportunity to practice and share his/her own
work provide students with individual area/perimeter practice sheets.
**The game show is going to be different problems that will be placed underneath the
Elmo.

What will you do if

a student struggles with the content?

Student will work in the GoMath textbook, page 523-524
Students will be working on regular shapes with lower multiples.

What will you do if

a student masters the content quickly?

Student will work in the GoMath textbook, pages 530-531
These students will be working on solving perimeter and area for irregular shapes.

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
Later on in life they will need to use area or perimeter for various purposes, such as remodeling a house, or
putting up a face on their property.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
Though at times it may seem like are and perimeter are pointless students can use these skills in their own homes
if they are helping their parents remodel. Additionally, there are many farms in the community they can use their
new skills to determine how much farm space is in their community
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
Student will be able to practice area and perimeter on study jam,
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
Low ELL will be paired with high ELL

Accommodations (If
needed)

No accommodations are needed.

Materials
(What materials will you use?
Why did you choose these
materials? Include any
resources you used. This can
also include people!)

GoMath textbook - practice problems that the students will complete.

Elmo - guide the students through the do now
Math Journal - students will complete their do now in their math journal.
Computer - students who need enrichment can practice their math facts on study jam
