Transformation
-is the uptake of DNA from the extracellular environment into a viable bacterial cell. This
is often used in laboratory investigations. For example Im a bacteria and you are another
bacteria I can combine or mix the genetic material of yours to my genes.
Transduction
-is the process where genetic material or DNA is transferred from one bacterium to
another via Bacteriophage/Virus. You can think that a Virus or a Bacteriophage can deliver the
Genetic Material. For example, it is an LBC delivery system and you are the bacteria that can
receive the package.
Conjugation
-involves the production of the sex pilus and the transfer of genetic material via the pilus.
You can think of it as the bridge on how to contact the donor bacteria to deliver its genes to
the recipient bacteria.
So in summary:
All transfer genetic material differently:
Transformation: bacteria uptakes DNA
Transduction: DNA transferred via Virus
Conjugation: DNA transferred via Pilus from Bacteria-Bacteria
