Heat Transfer
Sheet # 2
1. The forced convective heat transfer coefficient for a hot fluid flowing over a
cool surface is 225 W/m2.C for a particular problem. The fluid temperature
upstream of the cool surface is 120 C, and the surface is held at 25 C.
Determine:
a. The heat transfer rate per unit surface area from the fluid to the surface.
b. The temperature at the lower surface of the metal if the thermal
conductivity is 379 W/m.k and the metal thickness is 5 cm.
2. A 1 inch outside diameter steel pipe with its outside surface at 400F is
located in air 90F with the convective heat-transfer coefficient between the
surface of the pipe and the air equal to 1.5 Btu/hr ft2 F. It is proposed to
add insulation having a thermal conductivity of 0.06 Btu/hr ft F to the pipe
to reduce the heat loss to one-half that for the bare pipe. What thickness of
insulation is necessary if the surface temperature of the steel pipe and ho
remain constant?
3. A composite wall is to be constructed of -in. stainless steel (k=10
Btu/h ft F), 3-in. of corkboard (k=0.025 Btu/h ft F) and in. of plastic (k=1.5
Btu/h ft F),
a. D r a w the thermal circuit for the steady state conduction through this
wall.
b. E v a l u a t e the individual thermal resistance of each material layer.
c. Determine the heat flux if the steel surface is maintained at 250F
and the plastic surface held at 80F.
d. What are the temperatures on each surface of the corkboard
under these conditions?
e. If the convective heat-transfer coefficients at the inner (steel) and
outer surfaces are 40 and 5 Btu/h ft F, Determine
i. T h e heat flux if the gases are at 250 and 70F, adjacent to the
inner and outer surfaces
ii. T h e maximum temperature reached within the plastic
iii. Which of the individual resistance is controlling?
