Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Student Student

1. Use the Internet to find a technology current event article.

Apple V FBI a plain English guide (www.bbc.com) Feb. 18, 2016 (Lee, 2016)

2. Write a paragraph summarizing the article.

Apple and the FBI are currently in a legal battle over the back door
access to an iPhone used by the suspected San Bernadino shooter
Syed Farook. A California court granted the FBI an order to compel
Apple to aid in their investigation. The FBI is demanding Apple to:
A. Disable the hardware on the phone from erasing itself after 10 failed
attempts at entering a passcode.
B. Alter the software to allow the 10,000 possible passwords to be
entered remotely by another computer.
C. Alter the software to stop the exponential time delay between each
incorrect password entry.
D. Control the process of this task at Apples headquarters in a way not
to risk the integrity of Apples encryption software.
Apple is making the argument that there is no such backdoor for only
the good guys and that this will affect all iPones and not just Farooks
phone. Their list of supporters has grown to include, Google, Facebook,
the Information Technology Industry Council and a growing number of
others.

3. Find two additional internet articles on the same topic.

Apple FBI Court case. www.money.cnn.com Feb. 25, 2016 (Goldman,
2016)
Apple vs. the FBI and other phones. www.fortune.com Feb. 23, 2016
(Hackett, 2016)
Search keywords: iPhone hacking, iPhone vs. FBI, and Apple and the
FBI.
Search engines used: Google and Yahoo.
Personly, I prefer Google over Yahoo. Googles searches are faster and
more relevant. Yahoo searches have too many adds, and the first few
results usually send you to a Yahoo sponsored news web page. Also,

they constantly try to load their toolbar and make Yahoo your home
page.

4. TRAPP your sources.

A. The article, Apple Verses FBI and other phones was written
February 23, 2016, 10:39 ET and has not been updated.
B. The article is relevant to the topic of my initial article and raises as
many questions as it answers.
C. The author is Robert Hackett, who is qualified. According to Fortune
magazine he has worked for them since 2014. He has a Masters
Degree in Journalism and a bachelor in both chemistry and English
as well as a minor in Technology and Science.
D. The information appears to be accurate by comparison to other
articles, thou there is no supporting evidence. Time may be the only
test for accuracy as this dilemma may, in fact, be headed for the
Supreme Court.
E. The purpose of this article was to inform. It presented both, Apples
and the FBIs position as well as quotes from each side respectively.

5. Find two scholarly journal articles on the same topic from the
CCBC Library databases.

A. The keywords used in the database search were IPhone and the
FBI and Cell phones and the FBI>
B. I initially used smart search and then narrowed the results down to
Academic OneFile and SocINDEX Databases
C. I chose this database because it produced the best results directly
related to the topic of my article.

A. The internet article without question is easier and quicker to access than
going through the CCBC Library databases. Minutes were spent on the Google
search as opposed to over an hour on the CCBC library hunting for current
articles on a topic that is currently in the news. Most of the items in the
library were older than six months. Before reading the article from YaleGloble,
I assumed it would be a greater authority on the subject. However, the article
was mostly a series of quotes from Apple and the FBI and offered little insight
to the possible outcome of the legal resolutions. (Zetter, 2016) In conclusion,
the article from the BCC held more authority than that of YaleGlobal. The
other CCBC scholarly article was older but was written by a lawyer and
offered more information about the FBI underlying objectives, on, cell phones
in general. (Kardell, 2015)
