Solomon P. Ortiz, a Democratic representative, voted in favor of a healthcare bill that he believes will help the estimated 150,000 people in his district without health insurance. However, some argue this is a step towards socialism. They are also concerned the bill could lead to preferential treatment in education based on political affiliation, as seen in communist countries. While Ortiz supports labor organizations, his voting record shows mixed support for business groups. To better support jobs in Cameron County, Ortiz needs to improve his record on business issues.

“One giant step to socialism, one small step to health care,”
might be the new depiction of where we are today, thanks to the “yea” vote of our Socialist Democrat Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz. He voted in favor of HR 4872, Health Care and Education Affordability Act, “which promises to bring economic prosperity for the betterment of this country and our people,” he said. He believes it will help the 150,000 folks in his district that he says do not have any health care. Using a population figure of 651,619, that is 23 percent of the population. One wonders how many of the un-or-under- insured are illegals. Wouldn’t working for more and better jobs in Cameron County help in a more constructive way? Because in the 2008 election, 58% voted Democrat and others voted 42.1%, those who love their freedom have a way to go. Some Democrats need to see the light and decide if they want to leave the New Socialism as a legacy for their children and grand-children. We do not want the federal government providing loans for our children’s advanced education. We saw that practice in Cuba and six former Iron Curtain countries as part of a newspaper study group. Young people who are members of the Young Pioneers and active in the “correct” party get preferential treatment in whether they go on to advanced education and what they will study. Could party affiliation have that effect here? Why not? Ortiz skirts the issues with a number of labor organizations, but it can be said that he shows himself to be pro big labor. In 2007-2008, he received the following grades for his support: Business-Industry PAC, 40%; The Alliance for Workers Freedom, 11%; Associated General Contractors of America, 57%; National Association of Manufacturers, 29%; National Federation of Independent Business, 56%; National Restaurant Association, 40%; National Retail Federation, 20%; National Lumber and Building Materials Dealers, 25%; U.S. Chamber, 65%; National Small Business Association, 68%. For Cameron County jobs, Ortiz needs to do much better. More In Two Weeks Ad Paid for by Duane A. Rasmussen
