What I Know
As a current student
myself I find the
statement true that
students tend to lose
interest during lecture.
Especially if the material
is regurgitated from the
book or powerpoint
slides. You have to get
the student involved and
in engaged in the lecture
to get the actual material
to stick.

What I Want to Know

From this video I also

knew the different
techniques and methods
to get students involved
in lecture by having the
students engage in class
discussions. This method
of learning allows the
students to learn from
each other and teach
what they know. From
previous reading I know
that this is an example of
the teaching method of
constructivism.
Constructivism is
knowledge is constructed
based on personal
experiences and
hypothesis made of the
environment (Oermann,
2015). Learners
continuously test these
hypotheses through
social interactions

The question I have about

group learning is when it
may become ineffective.
In the video there is no
discussion of when the
groups may be ineffective
for learning. Sometimes
with group learning
students may get off
topic due to loose guided
instructional direction.
There may also be a
dominant person in the
group speaking for the
group. However, that
student may be the only
one understanding the
content. Also when in
group students may
conform to an idea they
do not believe in just to
avoid conflict. The video
does not reflect upon how
to deal with problems
that may occur with

What I Learned
What I have learned
about this video is about
the 85 percent rule. This
occurs when the students
are able to teach about
85% of the course
content after class and
group discussion. This
helps the students to
draw from their existing
expertise and the
instructor is able to teach
the rest. So as the
instructor it is important
to assess what the
students knows and build
upon that knowledge.
I also learned that group
discussions tend to
function better when they
are given the resources to
guide their discussions.
These resources include
books, guest speakers,
video clips and the
internet to help guide
their group discussion in
the right direction.

(Oermann,2015).

ineffective group
learning.

With passive learning the

student is lectured for an
extended period of time.
The instructor believes
the student is retaining
the information. However,
some of the material
goes right over the
students head and their
mind tends to wander.
During passive learning
the student may deflect
the material because it is
not constructed from
knowledge they already
know.
