Traditional Rules of Nitro Ball

Objective:
Score more points than the opponents by hitting the Nitro Ball over the net so that the
opponents cannot return the ball.

Directions:
Players: Typical High School and College teams only have 4 players per team.
Court: Nitro Ball Courts are 78L by 36W. It is the exact same size as a tennis court. The net is
halfway between each baseline, with the service line 21 from the net.
Games and Scoring: Like Tennis, Nitro Ball uses Rally scoring. This means points are only
award to a team off of their serve. Teams are never given a point unless it was their serve. First
team to get to 21 points wins the game (Win by 2 points, 25 point max.) Win 2 out of 3 games to
win the match.
Serving: Players serve behind the service line and in front of the baseline. Each player serves
in a clockwise rotation. Two teammates must be in front of the service line, and two must be
behind the service line. Players must serve the ball with an underhand strike. Players are only
allowed one attempt to serve.
Game Play: After the ball is served players can travel wherever they want on the court. The
serving team keeps the ball until they fail to score a point. A service fault occurs when: The
Server steps on the service line, the volleyball doesnt make it over the net, a player on the

25

serving team comes in contact with the volleyball, the volleyball lands out of bounds. Serve is
granted to the opposing team if any of these faults occur.
Game Play:

first).

Ball must bounce once before every strike (besides serve).

Team only has three hits to get the ball over the net.
Hands and arms ONLY.
Any form of block, intentional or unintentional, is illegal (ball must touch ground
Players cannot strike the ball twice in a row.
Players may hit the ball with one or two hands.

Scoring:
Teams receive points when:
The ball bounces twice on the opponent's side.
Opposing team doesnt return the ball within three hits.
Opposing team hits the ball out of bounds.
Opposing team commits a fault or foul.

Modified Rules
Players:
Teams will have 5 students per team.

Games and Scoring:

We will follow the same traditional rules that Nitro Ball follows.
Serving:
-Players that are unable to get the ball over the net on their first try are allowed a
second try. If they fail to get it over the second time, players can throw the ball over the
net with two hands.
-Two players must stand in front of the Service Line, and Three players (Including
server), will stand behind it.
Game Play:
We will not count failing to make the volleyball go over the net on the first try as a fault.
Players are encouraged to verbally call out if they are striking it. Players must listen to
the Referees decisions during games.

Skills Challenges:

This test will be stressing the importance of a good serve. As the server, students have
the chance of getting an ace off of the serve. With this test, students will see how close
they can serve the volleyball to certain targets on the opponent's side. This challenge
can translate over to gameplay when servers need to serve the volleyball to a weak
spot in their opponents defense. Each player on each team will get three chances to
land the volleyball into a hula hoop off of the serve. Students receive two points if the
volleyball lands in the hula hoop, and one point if it hits the rim of the hula hoop. There
will be fifteen chances per team to score a total of 30 points.

Skills Challenge:
Shot Defense:
In this challenge, players will be by themselves facing the teacher. The teacher will hit
the volleyball over the net in any direction and it is the students job to legally return the
volleyball back over the net. Each student will get two chances to return the ball. If the

30

student successfully returns the ball, their team receives one point. Teams have the
chance to score up to ten points. Students love this challenge because they receive the
opportunity to beat the teacher.

Scorekeepers will be keeping track of their own teams scores (Honestly) by using
challenge score cards.

Fair Play & Sportsmanship Statement

As a teacher and coach, I expect all of the following rules to be displayed,
respected, and promoted.
Zero-Tolerance for cheating We are all here to play a game and get
along. There is an old fashioned term that I like to use, Cheaters never win..
Effort is expected Physical Education may be the only period of the
day where you get to get off of a chair, use it! Nobody appreciates a teammate
that doesnt try, and you wouldnt either.
Be respectful We are a class, we are a family. All of your peers are
equal and deserved to be treated as you would like to be treated. Shake your
opponents hands, absolutely no negative remarks towards one another, and
listen to the referee.
Be humble Even if you are the coach of your team, you are still a team.
Listen to your teammates and cooperate to get the job done. No one person
should be running the team entirely, if this happens, that person will be
disciplined.
Be prepared Students are expected to be on time, with their team, in
their uniform, and at every practice and game. The team needs all of its players
to be successful and move forward.
Sportsmanship Assessment:
(1)- Never
(2)- Sometimes

(3)- Most of the time
