Celebrating International Womens Day.

What is International Womens Day?

International Womens Day is celebrating the social economic, cultural and
political achievements of women.
Its celebrated in many countries around the world. Its a day when women are
recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national
ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
When did International Womens Day start?
Womens Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn
of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Women began
protesting against working conditions, equality, violence, International Womens
Day is held on March 8 in all countries.
What is this special Day for?
Its a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of
courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an
extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
Are men and women equal now?
Much progress has been made to protect and promote womens rights in recent
times. However, nowhere in the world can women claim to have all the same
rights and opportunities as men, according to the UN. The majority of the worlds
1.3 billion absolute poor are women. On average, women receive between 30
and 40 percent less pay than men earn for the same work. Women also continue
to be victims of violence, with rape and domestic violence.
The medias effect of body image.
While women have made significant strides in the past decades, the culture at
large continues to place great emphasis on how women look. These beauty
standards are projected through the media (magazines, modeling, TV, films, etc)
and have a big impact on young women and their body image.
