    Independent Certifiers of Green Building Products by Tint of Green “Throughout the US and Canada , independent environmental certifiers are being formed as interest in green living increases, while established organizations refine their goals and expand their offerings. By providing unbiased evaluations of new and improved products, these certifiers make it easier for consumers to make informed, responsible green choices.” Although the Tint of Green Where-to pages do not yet identify the various green certifications on a product-by-product or service-by-service basis, we do want to help you understand what to look for when you are shopping for green choices. Here are the most common and respected certifying bodies currently working in North America. If you know of others, please let us know. • Cradle to Cradle Certification- Provides certification for a variety of building and consumer products, including office chairs, some cleaning products, and carpet. • EcoLogo Program- aged by TerraChoice environmental marketing, this organization certifies hundreds of products, including appliances, gardening supplies, home improvement products, and cleaning supplies. • Energy Star- They certify a variety of products according to the energy they use, including home entertainment, computers, laundry and kitchen appliances, and more. • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- The international non-profict organization most respected for forestry products certification. Look for its logo (or qualified certifier logos) on many wood and paper products. • Green Label and Green Label Plus- Administered by The Carpet and Rug Institute, these cerfifications identify products with very low VOC emissions. • Green Seal- An independent, non-profit organization that provides science-based environmental certification standards for anything from cleaning services to paints. • GreenGuard - Certifiers of many green products, including furniture, paint, flooring and insulation. • Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) - An independent, third-party certifier. They administer FSC certification as well as other environmental certifying systems on a variety of products. • SmartWood - The largest FSC certifier of forestlands. Look for their seal of approval on wood, paper, and forest products.
