Article Summary

In recent news around the world, there is a lot of talk about technology privacy. Apple is
embroiled in a battle with the FBI over an iPhone that was used by one of the shooters involved
in the December attack that killed 14 and wounded 22 in San Bernardino, California. The two
sides are involved in an ongoing court case over Apples refusal to comply with the FBI. CNN
recently wrote a story explaining Apples promises. In the article Apple promises privacy-but
not on iCloud, apple talks about their stance on privacy and security. Apple feels that ones
privacy should be private. iCloud lets you access your music, photos, contact, calendars where
the data is accessible to Apple. iCloud is not private from the government or from Apple.
Although apple pushes customers to back up their iPhones to iCloud, you have the option to not
do it. By not backing up your iPhones information to iCloud you can be private from everyone.
Apple does not want law enforcement to be able to use peoples information. The CEO of Apple,
Tim Cook, recently told customer We have even put the data out of our reach, because we
believe the contents of your iPhone are none of our business.

Bing vs Google Search engines

In addition to finding a recent article about Technology Privacy, I also performed two
different searches from two search engines, Bing and Google. For both searches, I searched
Technology Privacy. I ran across several results for both articles. Google is usually my umber
one search engine to use mainly because that search engine has been around longer and I because
I have a Gmail account. After comparing the two search engines, I did notice Bing gave more
autocomplete suggestions that Google does. I also noticed Bing puts related searches to the right
of my search result whereas Google put related searches at the bottom. Overall both search
engines were pretty good. I was able to find journal articles as well as magazine articles in both
searches. Both searches were very helpful and I was able to pick different articles from both
searches.

Scholarly Journal Articles

Searching on the CCBC library journal articles database, I found two articles Technology
Privacy. When I performed the first search, I first logged on the CCBC libraries page. I scrolled
to the bottom and selected Articles & Research Databases under the research tab. From there I
selected general purpose and I chose the ProQuest database. I typed technology privacy in the
search box and selected full text as well as scholarly journals. I also narrowed my search results
to find articles in a date range of 2015 and 2016. After filtering my search, I was able to find my
first article titled Privacy and Technology Reconsidering a Crucial Public Policy Debate in the
Post-September 11 Era.
For my second article, I started at the CCBC library page and selected Articles &
Research Database under the research tab. This time I selected Current Issues/Newspapers and I
chose the opposing viewpoints database. In this search, I was able to find statistics, references,
magazines and news articles that covered my topic. I decided to select a journal article for this
one called Privacy, Technology and National Security.

Internet vs Journal Articles

Now that I have completed searching the internet as well as Journal articles for the
technology privacy topic that I chose, I am now able to compart and contrast the two searches. I
believed both searches were helpful for me to a point. I notice with the internet articles anyone
can write on an internet and make a page. The internet is helpful but compared to the journal
articles I found on the CCBC libraries database I learned they are more scholarly and helpful for
actual assignments. In order to find a creditable source on the internet it took a little longer
unless you went to a certain page, such as CNN. The databases from CCBC were easier to find
and I didnt have to try to figure out if I could believe. The journal articles I found on the
database seem to more reliable, relevant and accessible. I noticed the search engines were more
useful for finding information produced by government, individuals and groups. It was more
challenging to narrow the results effectively. Overall both places were good places to look.
