Outcomes:
Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an objects motion depends
on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. [Clarification Statement:
Emphasis is on balanced (Newtons First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative
comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newtons Second Law), frame of
reference, and specification of units.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to forces
and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame and to change in one
variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.]
Wisconsin Teaching Standard # 5: Teachers know how to manage a classroom: The teacher uses an understanding
of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social
interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Instructional objective(s): The students will be able to conduct a lab using different masses and motions,
create a graph with the data, and analyze the graph.

List all of the materials you will need to teach this lesson. Include those you designed.
(1 set of the following for each group) 1 slinky, 2 meter sticks, 30 beans, 2 paper clips, 1 paper cup, tape

Watch the first minute of this bungee chair video.
Ask for variables that need to be tested ahead of time to make this ride safe. Answers should involve length of
bungee, elasticity, and amount of weight amongst others.
Ask the students to discuss (in their groups) how they could use the supplies given (describe supplies) to create
an experiment to test amount of weight and elasticity.
After about two minutes of discussion, have students bring up the lab on their chromebooks and save it using
the following format: Hour_LastName_Bungee Lab in their shared science folder.
.
Steps for instruction:
EXPLAIN how the lab is set up: given the question, procedures, materials, and data table so that the main focus
is on collecting data regarding independent & dependent variables, evaluating the data's reliability, analyzing
that data for relationships, and then constructing explanations based on their data
Have students read through the lab sheet silently and fill in the independent, dependent, and control variables as
well as forming their own hypothesis.
Answer questions in their group orally:
How close was your procedure to this written one?
What are advantages to us all running the lab exactly the same?
Explain their tasks of setting up experiment, collecting data, creating a graph, and writing an analysis and
conclusion part.
Assign groups using the deck of cards and the seven assigned lab stations. .
Students will work together to set-up their experiment and collect data in the table.
A graph will be created independently using the data either on excel or hand-drawn.
Begin working on analysis and conclusion used prompts given.
Closure:
Make sure stations are cleaned up and remind students to work on analysis and conclusion for homework. They
will be sharing their results on Wednesday: Graph, conclusion, any errors that would affect data
Class will analyze for overall trends to determine IF data is reliable and groups are trustworthy
