Classifying and identifying two-dimensional figures based upon presence or absence of parallel and / or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence angles of a specified size. Teacher will model identifying the characteristics of said shape. Teacher will repeat this with multiple shapes. Students will complete an exit ticket with one 2D shape and answer the question, "What are the characteristics of this shape? How do you know?"

Victoria Bielomaz Chris Baumgras Trulie Cottman Generic Lesson Plan Classifying and Identifying Lines, Shapes, and Other Two-Dimensional Figures Grade Level: 4th Objectives: The student will be able to: -
Classify two-dimensional figures based upon presence or absence of parallel and/or
perpendicular lines Standard: 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. Explanation: Using the Smart Board teacher will display a 2D shape. Teacher will model identifying the characteristics of said shape. Teacher will repeat this with multiple shapes. Teacher will make sure that parallel and perpendicular lines are the focus of this particular lesson. As more shapes are modeled then comparisons can be drawn with a think aloud. Check for Understanding: The teacher draws a variety of shapes on the board and asks the students: -What -What -What -What -What
are parallel lines?
are perpendicular lines? types of shapes are these on the board? characteristics does this shape have? characteristics do these shapes have in common?
Guided Practice: Teacher observes students:
- Classifying shapes based upon parallel and perpendicular lines - Orally discussing shape characteristics and similarities - Writing shape characteristics underneath sketches of each shape Independent Practice Worksheet: Sheet attached: Classify 2D Figures Corrective Worksheet: Sheet attached: Identifying Lines in Shapes Extension Worksheet: Sheet attached: Classifying 2D Shapes Closure: Students will complete an exit ticket with one 2D shape and answer the question, What are the characteristics of this shape? How do you know?
1. List the shapes that have at least 1 set parallel sides.

List the shapes that have at least 1 set perpendicular sides. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 3. List the shapes that have BOTH parallel and perpendicular sides. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 4. List the shapes that have NEITHER parallel nor perpendicular sides. ___________________________________________________________________________________
Extension Worksheet- Classifying 2D Shapes
Directions: Draw each of the shapes described. Highlight the lines indicated in the question. 1. Draw a shape with 1
