Legendary!football!coach!Vince!Lombardi!relayed!a!powerful!message!when!he!said,""After"the"cheers"
have"died"down"and"the"stadium"is"empty,"after"the"headlines"have"been"written,"and"after"you"are"back"
in"the"quiet"of"your"room"and"the"Championship"Ring"has"been"placed"on"the"dresser"and"all"the"pomp"
and"fanfare"have"faded,"the"enduring"thing"that"is"left"is"the"dedication"to"doing"with"our"lives"the"very"
best"we"can"to"make"the"world"a"better"place"in"which"to"live.!Through!this!quote,!one!of!the!most!
successful!coaches!in!the!history!of!any!sport!showed!that!he!didnt!want!to!be!defined!solely!by!the!
numerous!wins,!championships,!or!coachRofRtheRyear!honors!he!had!accumulated.!Instead,!he!was!
driven!to!make!a!positive!impact!on!the!world!around!him!and!to!be!a!positive!influence!in!the!lives!
of!others.!Decades!later,!it!is!the!opportunity!to!do!these!two!things!shown!by!Vince!Lombardi!that!
motivates!me!to!teach!and!coach.!

During!my!time!as!a!student,!I!was!always!blessed!with!some!great!teachers.!What!made!them!so!
great?!Not!only!did!they!know!the!subject!material!and!find!ways!to!make!learning!fun!and!
interesting,!but!they!truly!cared!about!each!of!their!students!as!individuals!and!wanted!to!help!them!
succeed.!My!fourth!grade!teacher!truly!knew!her!students.!She!knew!I!loved!sports!and!would!talk!
about!them!with!me!often.!One!day,!when!the!University!of!Kansas!basketball!team!was!playing!in!
the!Big!XII!Tournament!during!the!day,!she!quietly!turned!on!the!radio!during!reading!time!and!let!me!
sit!next!to!it!to!listen!to!the!game.!!After!that!moment,!I!always!enjoyed!coming!to!school!and!always!
was!going!to!give!my!best!effort!in!her!class.!Another!great!mentor!I!had!was!in!junior!high.!Mr.!
Unruh,!my!physical!education!teacher!and!basketball!coach,!always!challenged!us!to!work!harder!
even!when!we!thought!we!were!giving!it!everything!we!had.!He!showed!us!that!we!can!reach!our!
goals!in!life,!but!we!must!remain!committed!with!a!disciplined!work!ethic!to!achieve!them.!

While!all!of!my!teachers!impacted!me!in!some!way,!this!coach!and!teacher!helped!me!realize!that!
Vince!Lombardi!had!it!right.!As$a$competitor,$I$obviously$want$to$win$numerous$games$a$year,$
compete$for$championships,$and$send$players$on$to$compete$at$a$higher$level.!As!someone!who!
strives!for!success!in!the!classroom,!I!want!my!students!to!earn!high!grades,!perform!well!on!
standardized!tests,!and!eventually!qualify!for!admission!to!prestigious!colleges.!However,!what!my!
students!and!athletes!learn!while!in!pursuit!of!these!goals!and!accomplishments!are!what!will!define!
me!as!a!teacher!and!coach.!Its!about!so!much!more!than!teaching!someone!that!2+2=4!or!about!that!
screen!and!role!play!that!led!to!the!game!winning!shot.!Teaching!and!coaching!is!about!equipping!
students!and!studentRathletes!with!the!tools!to!live!a!good!life!as!they!become!champions!receiving!
high!grades!in!their!homes,!communities,!and!future!careers.!

Although!winning!and!reaching!academic!goals!is!something!you!should!devote!yourself!to,!what!
really!makes!it!meaningful!is!the!journey!that!one!takes!to!achieve!that!success.!It!is!because!of!this!
journey!and!the!opportunity!to!positively!impact!the!world!around!me!while!being!a!positive!
influence!in!the!lives!of!others!that!I!am!motivated!to!teach!and!coach.!Just!like!Vince!Lombardi!
