CourseDescription
This course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to practiceandimprove your oral and
listening skills inFrench. There willbe an emphasisonimprovingthestudentsspontaneousspeaking
ability. Students will discuss a variety oftopics pertainingtoculture,currentevents, anddaily life in
the Francophoneworld.During discussions, students will improve theirvocabularyandgrammar,ask
questions, interact, andreacttooneanotherinasafegroupsetting.Thisclassisdesignedtobringfun
andentertainmenttoconversationinaclassroomsetting!
LearningOutcomes
You will improve your ability to communicate in French by enriching your vocabulary, and
strengthening your knowledge and ability to manipulate grammatical structures. You will learn to
paraphrase andusecircumlocutions("talkaround")toexpresscomplicatedthoughtsforwhichyoudo
nothavetheprecisevocabulary.
ParticipationPolicy
This class meets onceaweek for 55 minutes, anditisconductedentirely inFrench.
Yourattendance
and participation are mandatory. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to
contribute to discussions. You will receive a daily participation grade, based on the quality and
quantity ofyour participation: 5 ptsfor being well prepared,activelyengagedduringclassandbeing
creative withthelanguage; 4ptsforshowingevidenceofpreparationforclass,andmakingsomeoral
contributions; 3 pts forbeing present and showingevidenceofpreparation,butdoesnotparticipate
exceptwhenasked; lastlyifyou cometoclass butareclearlynotpreparedforclass activities,youwill
earneither a 2 or 1, dependingonthe degreetowhichyourlackofpreparationimpedestheprogress
of others in the class. Speaking a language other than French will result in the reduction of
participation points forthatday. Additionally, unless usedduring a presentation with priorapproval,
electronicdevicesarenotallowedandwillalsoreduceparticipationpoints.
AttendancePolicy
You are allowed only one excused absence
, which will be recorded as a grade of 0. Additional
absences will result in the lowering of your course grade.
Lateness will result inanautomatic3 for
yourparticipationgradefortheday.
Presentations
Eachweek, one ofyou will berequired to lead halfoftheclasstime(25minutes)worthofdiscussion
on the topic. You should give a presentation (1015 minutes) and spend theremainder of the time
(1015minutes)facilitatingadiscussiononthetopic.By5pmontheFridaybeforetheseminaryouare
leading, youmust send avideo or article on this topic to the wholeclass thattheymust prepare for
Tuesday. You should come prepared with questions to lead thediscussion and/or activities todo. If
youneedhelpwiththis,seeyourprofessortheweekbefore.
JournalReactions
Two journal reactions will be due during the semester. These will be a onepage, typed,
doublespacedpapersdueatthebeginningofclass.Thesecanbeareactiontoone specificseminaror
multiple (recent) seminars. You can summarize what we discussed and/or elaborate on the topic.
These should be a personal reaction to a seminar that particularly interested you and how it has
helped youdevelop your French.Journal reactions will begraded whollyfor creativity,language use
and level of reflection.Latenesswillresultinasubtractionofpointsandjournalswillnotbeaccepted
morethan7daystardy.
