Project #7- A Lesson Plan to Teach a Phonics Skill over a Two-Day Period

I.

Objective
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to distinguish
between a word that contains a long e sound and a word that contain a
short e sound.

II.

Materials
Worksheet for step # 5 You decide #1- 20 words
Worksheet for step #6 You decide #2- 7 words and pictures
Worksheet for step # 9- You decide #3- 12 words and pictures

III.

Procedure
1. The teacher will greet the class by saying, Good morning, boys and
girls. Today we will be learning how short vowels sound and long
vowels sound. Students, there is nothing to fear because we have
already gone over all of the long and short vowel sounds last week.
Today is special, you know why? Because the special vowel for
today is the vowel E so that is what we are going to focus on
specifically. All vowels have a long and short sound so the vowel E
has a long and short sound.
2. The teacher will focus on the long sound for the vowel E first. The
teacher will write two words that have the long sound for the vowel
E on the board (Bee and Tea). The teacher will say the words aloud
using proper pronunciation. The teacher will pronounce the words
while overly exaggerating the long e sound. The teacher will say,
When I say these words tell me what sound you hear? The
teacher will give the students an opportunity to answer. The teacher
will repeat the words using proper pronunciation and overly
exaggerating the long E sound (3) times. After repeating the word,
the teacher will say, Do the two words sound the same? The
teacher will give the students an opportunity to answer (yes or no).
The teacher will explain that the long sound of all vowels is the
sound of its alphabet name so the long sound of the vowel E sounds
like the letter E. The teacher will repeat the process with two other
words (Tree and Knee) and follow the process above then move on
the short E sound.
3. The teacher will focus his attention on the short sound for the vowel
E. The teacher will write two words that have the short sound for the
vowel E on the board (Pet and Net). The teacher will pronounce the

words with the short E sound. The teacher will say, What sound do
you hear from those two words? The teacher will give the students
an opportunity to answer. The teacher will repeat the words (3)
times while putting special emphasis on the short E sound. The
teachers will say, Do the two words sound the same? The teacher
will give the students an opportunity to answer (yes or no). The
teacher will explain that the short sound for the vowel E makes the
eh sound. The teacher will repeat the process with two other
words (bed and dead).
4. The teacher will say, Does anyone like music? I have a song for
you. It is the best song you will ever hear today. Would you all like to
hear it? The teacher will play the song aloud and tell all the
students to stand up to enjoy the song. The short (3-4 minute) song
depicts the difference between the long and short sound for the
vowel E. (Letter E song video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Cm4OnFLl5Uw . After the video, the teacher will ask the students
did they like the song and tell the students to return to their desks.
5. The teacher will say, It is time now to show me what you have
learned so far. Remember the song while doing this worksheet.
Remember the long sound of a vowel is its alphabet name, so the
long sound of the vowel E is the alphabet name E. For the short
sound of the letter E vowel, it makes a eh sound. We have 20
words here; you will be deciding rather you hear a short or long
sound for the vowel E. The teacher will do (4) words as guided
practice making sure he goes over two words with the long vowel
sound E and two words with the short vowel sound E. The students
will be the remaining (16) as independent practice.
6. The teacher will hand out a worksheet for homework with 7 words
and the pictures of those words. The students will have to decide
whether the words have the short or the long sound for the vowel E.
End of day #1
7. The teacher will check the homework that was done last night. The
teacher will go over each problem on the chalkboard and give
students all of the correct answers and explain why the answers are
correct.

8. The teacher will review the long and short sound for the vowel E.
The teacher will say, Remember, we have went over both the long
and short sound for the vowel E. The long sound is the sound of the
name of the letter. So words like (Bee and Sea) have the long E
sound because you hear the sound of the name of the letter. The
teacher will write the two words on the board while always using
proper pronunciation and putting stress on the long E sound in
those words. The teacher will continue to say, The short sound of
the vowel E sounds like eh as in (rest and slept), these words have
the short sound of the vowel E because you hear eh. The teacher
will write the two words on the board while remembering to always
use proper pronunciation and put stress on the short E sound in
those words.
9. The teacher will then pass out a worksheet with (12) words and
pictures and students would have to decide whether the words
contain a long or short sound for the vowel E.
