A Lesson Plan to Teach a Reading Readiness Skill over a Two-Day Period

I.

II.

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to distinguish which shape
is different among three choices.
Materials
- 2 worksheets
- 1 Box of 2 dimensional shapes
- 1 or 2 markers per student
- 1 or 2 crayons per student
- 1 sheet of computer paper per student

III.
Methods
#1. The teacher will welcome the class by saying, Good morning Boys and Girls.
The teacher will introduce the lesson by saying, Boys and Girls today we will be
learning about the difference among shapes. Since we have already studied all of
the shapes last week, we should all be familiar with the shapes. The teacher will
continue with saying, We will look at three shapes and our job is to decide which
one is different.
#2. The teacher will begin by teaching the students about various shapes. The
teacher will pick four common shapes (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle). The
teacher will draw each shape, one at a time on the board and describe a
characteristic that will help the students learn the name of each shape. For
example, the teacher will draw a circle on the board and say, This is a circle. You
can tell it is a circle because it has no sides. For the square, the teacher would say
it has four equal sides. For the triangle, the teacher would say it has three sides. For
the rectangle, the teacher would say it has two pairs of opposite sides that are
equal but all sides are not equal.
#3. The teacher will make flash cards and put one shape on each flash card and
hold it up for students to name. The front of the flash card would have the
description of the shape and the back would have a picture of the shape. The
teacher will mix up the routine of showing a picture of the shape and students
naming it and giving just a description and students naming it.
#4. The teacher will hand out a worksheet for the students to complete to assess if
the students understood the objective. The teacher will do the first (3) questions
with the students as guided practice on the board and the remaining (7) would be
independent practice for the students.
#5. The teacher will assign homework for students and that assignment would be
to draw five patterns of (3) shapes where two are the same and one is different. The
students job is to not color the one that is different. It will be done on computer
paper.
#6. End of day one

#7. The teacher will check the homework that was done last night. The teacher will
go over each problem on the chalkboard and give students all of the correct
answers and explain why the answers are correct.
#8. The teacher will review the distinctive characteristics of the four shapes from
the previous day by drawing each one on the board and asking students to identify
the shapes. (Circle, square, rectangle, triangle)
#9. The teacher will introduce and teach two more shapes to add to the four from
the previous day. The teacher will add a trapezoid and hexagon to the lesson. The
teacher will draw each shape on the board and tell the students a distinctive
characteristic about the shape. For example, for the trapezoid, the teacher will say,
A trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides. For the hexagon, the teacher will say, A
hexagon has six sides.
#10. The teacher will assign a worksheet that has (10) questions using all six
shapes. (Circle, square, triangle, rectangle, trapezoid, hexagon) The teacher will do
the first two problem on the board with students as guided practice and the
students will do the remaining eight problems as independent practice.
