ABSTRACT
Soesilo, N.P., 1999. The role of the ependyma in tail regenration of lizard (Mabouya
multifasciata Kuhl). Biologi 2(8): 419-430
The research was conducted to determine whether the ependyma is essential for the initiation of
tail regeneration and for the induction of cartilage tube differentiation in the lizards tail regeneration. An
attempt was made by implanting the ependymal lining into dorsal muscle of tail. The ependymal lining that
is free of nerve fibers and perikaria obtained from the amputated portion of the regeneration tail. The
portion of the regenerated cord in the cartilage tube consist of only the ependyma and glial cells.
Two groups of lizard each consisted of 20 were prepared. The cartilage tubes containing
ependyma were inserted into the dorsal muscle of the lizards tail of the first group and the cartilage tubes
without ependyma inserted into the second group. The experimental lizards were maintained for a periode
of 30 days. The portions of the implanted tail were fixed in Bouin fixative, stained with Hematoxylin Eosin
and Bodian stain.
The result revealed that the tail regeneration occurred only on the ependymal implanted tails. No
regenerates formed in association with implants of cartilage tube alone. All of the regenerated tails
contained cartilage tubes. Thus, the ependyma is responsible for initiation of the tail regeneration and for
cartilage differentiation in lizards tail regeneration.
